No worries. That thread is more about the practice of blogging and the tools we use. I'm sure a lot of people blog that couldn't care less about what goes on under the hood, only that their voices are heard. So, hey, why not a "plug your blog" thread?

I have a sporadically active conventional blog here (http://www.lightfantastic.org/imr/extras/weblog), but it's just an extension of a personal site (http://www.lightfantastic.org) that includes all kinds of other content. I do consider a 'blog' separate from an 'online journal,' the former being more observations of the world and tied largely to other destinations on the web rather than something more personal and introspective.

Just today I posted my first blog entry with a Digg link (http://www.digg.com/apple/Podcasters_Hold_Your_Fire), which all the cool bloggers are doing, as part of my commentary on one of the hot topics in the "blogosphere." If you Digg, Digg me! :)

Yes, lots of HT'ers blog, some at HawaiiStories (and I can hook anyone else up there if they're interested). Aunty Lynn started there and has never stopped. Jdub (http://www.hawaiistories.com/jamie), meanwhile... gosh, I wish he'd write more. Love his stuff!

I know Scrivener, Link, Mel, and others here blog, but I'll let 'em introduce their writings themselves.

This thread reminds me... didn't Lei Liko confess to blogging (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=9772) somewhere? Did we ever get that link? ;) Now that's a blog I'd like to read.

Er um... I got a blog...

But I'll be the first to admit... I've only posted once! Well twice now that I'm gonna post the address here.

If I get any comments... Maybe I'll start being more active with it.

My Blog Menehune Man's World (menehunemansworld.blogspot.com) was born on Sept. 13th, 2006. I now have 30 entries in 4 sections(My history, poetry, thoughts, and world). Also all the photos are either taken by me or of me, not gleaned from elsewhere.
So far only 4 comments and three of them are from friends of mine. I hope other's are enjoying too?!

It's a very narcistic place, but the world needs to know how I think and feel! HaHaHa! :D

He a lucky menehune... go read the sensual intelligence thread...Not only lucky... his wife is beautiful too!!!!

really? THANKS!!!!! i was worried about the setup but i wanted to keep it as simple as possible to navigate, since the luxory of a blogger site wasn't around back then--- i was using myspace which mos def brought a lot of the visitors [which is the only good thing i think comes out of the myspace blogs, btw, ryan] but i had to pretty much figure out the simplest way to do it on my own domain that i bought in '97.
archiving by month, etc is actually fun for my friends cause we can always go back and see what we were doing at any one time.

either way.... thanks so much. it's been looking blah to me lately so i needed to hear that :)

Ha, I've already retired from blogging:

It all started with The Honolulu Newspaper War (http://www.pacifichistory.net/NEWSFILE/NEWS.HTML) blog, which just made the Gannett folks crazy.

Then it morphed into the Check6Honolulu (http://www.pacifichistory.net/CHECK6FILE/CHECK6.HTML) blog

But eventually I called a halt to it, because, frankly, I'm not a very interesting person and who the hell cares what I have to say? Also, it's too much like work.

The new blogging software would help. I did everything in the original blogs in SimpleText!

Indeed! I'm surprised Ian Lind (http://www.ilind.net) hung on as long as he did before finally converting to real blog software earlier this year. The benefits were two-fold. It got a lot easier for him, and it got much better for readers (since he now has a real RSS feed and his links and archives always work).

I, for one, loved the Honolulu Newspaper War blog, and Check6, and would love to see your return, even if you only blogged about... cats or something. I can set you up, just say the word!

And heck, if a "full blog" is too much work (I mean, really!), there are now even smaller, quicker formats becoming more popular. You've got Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/hawaii) for presence (that a lot of folks use as a "microblog"), and even "tumblelogs (http://de.sperate.com)," which are blogs with nothing but clips and scraps.

I think I'm a born gossip...I tell myself that it's just curiosity about how other people live their lives, though.

I had the courage to write about stuff because I read a piece of advice...'don't write what you think they want to hear, write what you want to tell them'.

I have a few blogs about my personal life, but honestly they're just for my own reference or for my personal friends, and I wouldn't expect perfect strangers to read them (and am often startled when somebody does).

However, I do have one blog that's aimed at a public audience: The Rat Hunter Diaries (http://www.sophielynette.com/blog/blogger.html). I don't update it nearly as often as I ought to, but that's a trend with most of my websites, unfortunately..

pzarquon
July 25th, 2007, 08:38 AM
Which ones are the tenants and which ones are the members? How do you get to be one or the other?Tenants are people whose blogs "live" on HawaiiStories. Members are bloggers who already have their own blog (like you (http://thissmallfrenchtown.blogspot.com/)!) but want to be linked/listed along with everyone else. In other words, if you're a blogger with Hawaii ties, you can be a member. If you'd like to be a blogger with Hawaii ties, we can set you up with a blog as a tenant.
I almost feel too shy to apply to join...cause it seems you have to apply,Well, you do. Sites like LiveJournal or Vox or Blogger take all comers, but HawaiiStories is a much smaller community whose members share at least some connection to the islands. So if you're in Houston and want to blog about Texas restaurants, for example, we probably aren't the right 'ohana for you. But if you're an Aiea kid living in NYC, we'd love to have you.

SusieMisajon
July 25th, 2007, 08:43 AM
And so what else happens over there? Is it for discussion, like here?

pzarquon
July 25th, 2007, 09:09 AM
The about page, linked earlier, explains it all. It was initially "community blog," a single blog with many contributors. Discussions did occur, but based on individual posts, and the focus of the content was personal storytelling, not general discussion (though the number of random discussions that popped up is what prompted me to start HawaiiThreads). Blogs and message boards are different beasts. Some kinds of expression and interaction work better in one venue than another.

To foster more storytelling, HawaiiStories also started hosting blogs for people. And these days, no one really posts to the "community blog," instead writing away on their individual blogs (which are also excerpted on the front page).

If you have any more questions about HawaiiStories, feel free to contact me. Let's get back to finding more blogs!

My blog (http://www.hawaiistories.com/mokihana) is at HawaiiStories, too.

I like having different categories. Some stuff is all in pidgin, others, like my knitting stuffs, I write in good kine English.

However, I did have several non-pidgin speaking readers tell me what they love about my blog is the pidgin! :D

I'd thought about having 2 separate blogs, (one in pidgin), but decided against it. I do give a warning on my category list which ones are in pidgin. Then people can choose what they want to read.

There are a lot of great blogs here. I will definitely need to find time to read through some of them!

I currently have two blogs of my own, and am hoping to expand that to other blogs of varying topics. My first blog is for my personal thoughts and posts, and is named after myself: daleyasunaga. The other blog that I host is a food-review blog for local restaurants. It only has a couple of reviews now but I hope to add at least one per week! I named the blog "LocoKineGrindz" so that it suits our islands!

Somebody has copied my blog under a slightly different name. Not only that, they've changed a few things around...added some pictures and split a post in two...so far. And the dates make no sense at all...I only finished a story about Maurice the Farmer yesterday, and the cloneblog says it's from May fourth.

So whatchu think? Am I supposed to think that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery? Laugh? Be concerned? Outraged? Offer them a job as my editor?

Hmmm...it's in english for me....there's a language filter you can adjust for Google. Hit the 'home' link on the left of the page and go to the 'Language Tools' link to the right of the search box then put in your language preference.

This kind of content-theft happens all the time, especially (or perhaps exclusively) from sites that generate syndication feeds. The purpose is spam-related. Generally, the stolen content brings Google-searchers to a site that generates ad-clicks, which generates revenue for whoever spent the ten minutes or so it takes to set up the copycat blog (which I have heard Ryan refer to as a "splog," for spam-blog).

There's a pretty good ('though poorly-written) explanation here (http://www.blogherald.com/2005/08/16/understanding-blog-and-ping/). Or a simpler explanation here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_blog).

If you've got original content on the web, and if that content is generating syndication feeds, this is going to happen. My feeling about it, at least now, is "whatever." It sucks, but I don't have time to track down every instance of content theft. You might see it differently, and I wouldn't blame you. But if you want to help your own cause, don't LINK to the offending site, as you do above! That only helps the thief's Google-placement.

I suspect, from the way I found out about it, that it is someone from another board where I post, rather than a spammer. But I have no idea if they are friend or foe, as it was an anonymous post...but, with the changed dates, I suspect it's not just for play.

Attention Hawaii bloggers! Homespun Honolulu has started a Hawaii blog carnival that will be posted once a month. I'm looking for anyone who wants to join in and participate! All you need to do is submit your best or favorite post about our home that you want to share with the rest of the world and you're off and running!

While my own focus is Honolulu, I couldn't help but want our carnival to bring us all together, and to provide some variety for our carnival attendees! Your post topic can be political, it can be about local business, it can be about food, it can be about flora and fauna... anything you like.

There are directions and a few rules and guidelines (http://www.homespunhonolulu.com/carnival-of-aloha/) but I don't think they're unreasonable -- this will keep us free of spam, etc. Just think family-friendly, non-advertisement post and you'll be in good shape! Questions or comments are welcome, either here or privately is fine with me.

It can be a lot of work for the host, but they're fun because you get to share everybody's links with the world!

The first one goes live on Labor Day. That was by accident. I didn't think about it but I kind of like it -- it's a Labor of love!

Yeah, thanks Ryan! Got it! Love it! Subscribed to the RSS feed. Now, about that kalbi recipe...

It's funny you mentioned that. I understand the passion behind it. Relatively recently, my mother told me that my father had a manuscript he was working on that was for a book on Statehood. It's gone -- no papers to be found anywhere. What I wouldn't give to get my hands on that now. I was only 5 when we lost him, so, how could I have known to protect it? I don't even remember seeing it. It means so very much to me now.

The things our parents leave us with are important. I felt that from tutusue also; her writings about her dad are pretty moving!

So, Infinity, has anyone made kalbi that even comes close? ;)

First, here's a virtual hug for sharing about your father (((((((SPRITE)))))). I began to read tutusue's blog about her father, and it touched too close to my soul...I had to stop, a few times. My parents are quite proud that I'm back into some type of writing. My Mom has already notified the "Aunties" so they're online too :) and my Dad, he said, "Now do I have stories for you." I'm sure I'll be writing his story too, and proud to do so also.

The only thing all of us got from the kalbi was my Papa's cast iron frying pan! And that too was eventually lost :( in the many moves since his passing.

Thank you for subscribing. I can see it now, adding to the group for guest list, "THE HTers".

Once in a while the downtown Woolworth store (which is a Ross now) would have an uninvited guest sitting on top of one of their freshly baked packages of bread. Customers weren't very enthusiastic about those fellow shoppers. You think that's because they didn't pay for their goods? :D

I realized, after grumbling a bit (http://www.lightfantastic.org/imr/extras/weblog/archives/005267.html) about the kinds of blogs that made the cut last time, that I needed to put up or shut up, or put my keyboard where my mouth is, or whatever the cliche is... basically, I needed to contribute if I wanted to see things improve. Because it is a great, fun idea.

It can be anything you guys! Food, politics, sports, Hawaiiana, whatever. Just don't send us porn or an ad to sell your house. You can sell your house on your blog, just don't submit the ad to the Carnival!

I appreciate everything you guys send and all your thoughts and/or concerns. It will be fun and, as Ryan (I mean Mr. Hutton) has said, it will only get better! It's our chance to share, to shine and to have fun!

Interesting story at this link (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2007/Oct/24/br/br0834152679.html) from today's Advertiser website:

Honolulu among leaders when it comes to blogging

Honolulu ranks as one of the top six metropolitan areas in the U.S. when it comes to people who read or contribute to blogs, according to a new survey.
The ranking by Scarborough Research found 12 percent of Honolulu adults have read or contributed to a blog in the past 30 days. That tied Honolulu with San Diego.
Austin, Texas topped the rankings with 15 percent, followed by Portland, Ore. at 14 percent. Seattle/Tacoma and the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose area, which each had 13 percent.
"Not surprisingly, the cities that rank highly for bloggers are also prominent Internet-usage markets. Austin and San Francisco adults, for example, are more likely than the average to have a broadband connection at home," said Gary Meo, senior vice president, print and digital media services, in a news release.
"Additionally, Austin, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle are markets with large high-tech economies."
Scarborough, a research firm that studies shopping, media and demographics, ranked 79 areas. Honolulu was listed ahead of such metropolitan areas as Dallas, Washington, Atlanta, Boston and Los Angeles. The national average was 8 percent.
The lowest-ranked cities were Pittsburgh and Buffalo at 2 percent.

Top 10 Metropolitation areas:

Austin, TX 15 percent
Portland, OR 14
San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose, CA 13
Seattle/Tacoma, WA 13
Honolulu, HI 12
San Diego, CA 12
Dallas/Fort Worth, TX 11
Columbus, OH 11
Nashville, TN 11
Colorado Springs/Pueblo, CO 11

Lowest 10 Metropolitan areas:

St. Louis, MO 6
Birmingham, AL 5
Charlotte, NC 5
West Palm Beach/Fort Pierce, FL 5
Fresno/Visalia, CA 5
Cleveland/Akron, OH 5
Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA 4
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA 4
Buffalo, NY 2
Pittsburgh, PA 2

Ah, I didn't know it'd make the Advertiser (though when it comes to 'breaking news,' a new toaster would make the cut, I guess). I blogged the rankings here (http://www.hawaiiweblog.com/2007/10/24/honolulu-ranked-fifth-bloggiest).

I think it's great to be in the top ten, and Scarborough knows numbers better than some other rankings I've seen, but... 13 percent of all adults in Honolulu are bloggers? And eight percent of all American adults are bloggers? I still think that's pretty high, even given their liberal definition of what a blogger is.

I'm fortunate to be able to speak on blogging now and then, and I'm lucky to find 13 percent of any audience -- even tech-savvy college kids -- who know what a blog is, let alone read them regularly. Never mind "contributing" to them.

If there are indeed 90,959 bloggers in Honolulu, I've been hanging out in all the wrong places!

Oops. Bad math. It's 12 percent, not 13, so 84,071 bloggers on Oahu.

Yeah, if they include all the crap on MySpace, I guess you can get closer to that number. But I wouldn't count it, and even if I did, that's a lot of bloggers.

It's an impossible number to nail down, frankly, just like the number of blogs. One person can start ten blogs and abandon them. I imagine the vast majority of blogs that are started never make it past the first ten posts.

Sorry I missed the last round, Evelyn! I'll have to stay in better touch... and volunteer, soon, to host the Carnival.

Here's something. If you have a blog and are willing to geek out with other local bloggers, I'm experimenting with a service called CLIQ. It's like a Flash-based, sidebar-positioned, Web 2.0 version of webrings. Anyone remember webrings? Basically a way for associated bloggers to link each other dynamically.

You can check out the Hawaii CLIQ here (http://www.cliqin.com/web/cliq_detail/205), and you can request to join here (http://www.cliqin.com/web/join_request?tribe_id=205). Note that for the CLIQ system to work, you need to include the "widget" code in the sidebar of your blog!

Good GAWD, has not Ian Lind already recruited and been hired for this? If not, they need to get a clue!

Nice one Slick! Oh, and thanks for letting everyone know they're a genius! Everyone will be happy to know that you only need to be in Junior High to get through mine! :D

So, here's the call! Deadline for the Carnival of Aloha is a week away... next Wednesday!

If you're going to join in this go 'round, send send your posts in! Slick, will you join us? Please? That would be cool! Here's today's post with the links to the guidelines and the submission form (http://www.homespunhonolulu.com/deadline-reminder-chapter-4-of-the-carnival-of-aloha/). I was being emotional this morning but I needed to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving because you guys have been so awesome and so supportive!

Slick, I've got to tell you... I had a piggy picture like that in my camera... I deleted the poor burnt corpse because I was so offended that a high-class restaurant would even think of putting something like that on their table. But, apparently a lot of them do it. John Dominis did NOT get a nice write up from me and that was one reason! Anyway, I had to share that. Theirs was a baby pig that looked like it was thrown into a fire. Ugh!

But, I like Brad's town! I wish there was one big enough around here to move in to!

Have fun everyone, have a great weekend and stay safe!

Calling all bloggers! A grad student at UH, working on a Masters in communications, is trying to get in touch with bloggers in Hawaii. If you blog, drop her a line... she's only got one question for you:My name is Marcie Stoddard and I am currently a graduate student here at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I am currently working on my masters in communication and am completing my research methodology class. I am conducting a small research to look at user generated content through blogs and what motivates Hawaii residents to blog.

If you could answer the following question to the best of your ability and the best of your knowledge. If you like you can also express any background information about yourself.

Why do you blog?

Thank you for your time. If you have any questions you can contact me at mstoddar@hawaii.edu (mstoddar@hawaii.edu)

I've been a member since April 2004 but have contributed a piteous 46 posts to HawaiiThreads.com. Obviously, I don't come around as much as I should, because when I revisited the site today, I realized that there is such an amazing community of individuals with insights, opinions, and fun galore! To be honest, trying to break in to such a well-established community such as HT as an old newbie is somewhat intimidating. It's akin to being the new kid at school, you know? So, I scoured the board for an easy topic to join and found this one.

With that said, here's my blog:
http://www.champuru.net/blog

Blogging since before "blog" was a word ~ and still going strong. :)

Looking forward to spending more time here on the board. (This sounds like deja vu, because I think I've said that sometime in the past.)

Donna! Welcome back, again! :) And yeah, you'd resolved to post more as a New Year's Resolution last year (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?p=51899#post51899). It's not too late to keep it, as far as I'm concerned!

Blogging since before "blog" was a word ~ and still going strong.I hear you. And you know how much I love your blog (and vlog and fitness blog and Vox and...)!

My first blog post, in July 2000, began, "I guess before my general disdain for the weblog fad solidifies, I should at least give it a good turn." As you'll note, back then, I even refused to use the word "blog," considering the shorthand to be too silly, sloppy.

Seven years later, and this is what it's come to:

Nice to see you around Donna! I hope all things have been well.

I've disappeared from HS and HT for a long while, too. I keep telling myself I'll catch up to all the blogs I used to read in the past but I haven't started yet. >_>

It's great to see familiar faces... err handles... names, nicknames. You know.

And there's PZ pimpin' his plate. :P Wonder if there'll be a competition to see who can spot him and take pics of where he's been spotted?

That's why everyone loves you! ;)

Since we're doing blog confessions at the moment... the other day I confessed to everyone's favorite aunty, Auntie Pupule, that I was looking for additional income when I got started, but, it only took me four or five months to figure out that, although I'm still poor and in financial distress (and the blog's not helping) I love the damn thing!

The blogs are a great source of information, community opinion and a source for bonding -- even if it's just our minds that are doing the bonding. :D It's also a wonderful way to express and share your passions about the things that warm your heart of make your neck hairs bristle!

I think you found out a little bit quicker than seven years, oh great Pzar! :p

Egads! Today's the deadline for the Carnival that goes live on Monday. Not a lot of entries and I'm not surprised. Too many irons in the fire at this time of year! So, here is a reminder and the entry form (http://blogcarnival.com/bc/submit_2127.html) and, if you miss the cutoff today, let me know and I'll pull it in even if it moves over to next month.

Anything you guys want to send in to help us wrap up the year, go for it! Pick your best or favorite post of the year and let me know that's what it is! Looking to highlight what you highlight! Okay, now I can't wait to see what comes in! This will be fun!

If you've got a blog and you've got some Aloha to share, what are you waiting for? (tapping fingers on the counter). :) Come on you guys -- let's all wrap up the year and welcome in the new one!

skeeterbess
December 31st, 2007, 07:36 PM
You've shown me yours, so I'll show you mine:

http://skeetsstuff.skeeterbess.com/

Actually, I could use some honest critique. A friend of mine, female, haole, Soutnerner, been here about ten years, recently told me that I came across as insensitive to Hawaiians when I did my most recent Slippah Project post. That's the last thing I want to do, but I'm just not seeing what she's talking about. She referred specifically to a phrase I used to describe kids reaching up to the truck: "I was reminded of New Orleans and Mardi Gras several times as eager young hands reached up to the truck claim their prizes."

I've been here long enough to know that I'm not kama'aina, except I get discounts. :D I understand the difference between the real term and the commercial one. I know that I'll always be malahini; I wasn't born here and my heritage is not local. Still, I've been made to feel at home here. I've tried to repay the aloha, in part, by being sensitive to culture and custom. I admit frequent bouts of ignorance, but I'm learning. I don't pretend to be anything other than what I am: a haole, a newcomer, humbled to be living in this place, in an amazing society of blended cultures. It's inevitable, I guess, that I screw up sometimes, not because I don't care, but because I don't know. I'd like to do better.

Many of my older blog post don't have tags and category listed because I moved from Blogger to my own domain in January and never went back and added those qualifications. I did go back today, though, and tag and categorize some older posts that focus on "local stuff." If you click the "Hawaii" category in the drop down selection box in my left sidebar you'll see most of the posts I've done with a local focus. (Quite a few of those, though, were for a weekly gardening thing I used to do, so not so much about local ways in those.) I'm proud of my wiriting, but I promise I won't get bent out of shape if you think there are lessons I need to learn.

I'd very much appreciate it if any of you would care to read a little of what I've written and offer your honest opinion as to whether I come across as another dumb, insensitive haole. I'm old, but not incapable of change. :p

Mahalo for any input you'd care to offer. :)

Here's something. If you have a blog and are willing to geek out with other local bloggers, I'm experimenting with a service called CLIQ. That was fast. CLIQ is shutting down (http://mashable.com/2008/01/16/cliq-cliq-boom/). I thought it was a neat idea, but the company that owned it was acquired by another company that has its own plans for invading the social media space. Ah well.
I'd very much appreciate it if any of you would care to read a little of what I've written and offer your honest opinion as to whether I come across as another dumb, insensitive haole. If you know enough to even ask the question, and endeavor to walk that impossible line between writing earnestly and honestly while also trying to be considerate others' sensitivities, I'd say the answer by default is that you're not "another dumb, insensitive haole." I'm not sure I would've made the Mardi Gras comparison, but only because of my mental image of what some people do to get those goodies... certainly not as a judgement of character or worth.

Interesting that you note that your friend who shared her concern is also relatively new to Hawaii. I find in my personal experience that my wife, from Florida, is more sensitive to perceived slights against Asians and or Hawaiians (i.e. me and our kids) than I am. In many cases she has a fair point, and has focused in on something that I may have just learned to tune out... but on the other hand, I can see how this can be taken to the extreme by some. And when someone not from some group goes out of their way to defend or "speak out on behalf of" said group, things can get hairy.

Even though we may know better, we still make mistakes, oversights, slip-ups, etc. So, it's always good to have reminders now and then. :)

I've got one! How about the following:

mine vs. mines
ghosts vs. ghostses
worse vs. worser
requests vs. requestses

Okay, part of that is more an elocution, spoken-language thing rather than a written, grammatical one... or at least I certainly hope so. But, I'm really not sure anymore. They're fingernails on the chalkboard for me, I know that much.

Anyway, I like it your blog! I think I'll harass you at Carnival time if I see a good article than can be twisted to be Hawaii-specific. :p

But I do drop in occasionally!I don't subscribe (via RSS feed) to ANY blog. It's hard enough finding time and/or energy to maintain my own blog, let alone reciprocate the good deed to read/comment elsewhere. Yet I try. Many folks who leave comments have blogs of their own, which is usually where I turn to visit. Some absolutely fantastic stuff out there for sure!

Scriv', you're semi-responsible for my food blogging endeavor, thanks to your mentioning way-back-then on the FLOCK app (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/archive/index.php/t-8848.html). If you look in my 'About' page, it says, "Who inspired you to do this?" Answer: A school teacher. :)
