I just got a note from a friend of mine with some questions about the HIFF, and I can't answer them. I'm gonna post them here and see if this intelligent movie-loving crowd can.

HIFF purportedly takes place over six islands. What are the logistics like? What are the best/most important places to be? Do the different sites compete for business?

As far as I know the main focal point is Honolulu,where they are having I think most of the viewings and awards

I used to be a HIFF member. HIFF is mostly volunteer run, so sometimes the events dont run as smoothly as anyone would like. Does it happen on 6 islands? I thought it was just Oahu and Maui =p

My sense is just Maui and Oahu, but I don't know. Neighbor Islanders, speak up!

Makaha is as close as I get to outer island! ;)

In addition to Maui, I'm remembering Kauai and the Big Island. HIFF mentions 6 islands on it's web site. The outer islands see fewer films, fewer venues.
