Just went for a morning session. Got in the water around 8 with the sun out and semi glassy, knee to waist high bowls.
Gotta love that feeling cruising down the line and looking down to clear, clean looking h20.

Brandon... not that I'm a surfer...
However, Honoli'i is not what I would consider clean h20, especially with the river that flows right into it...
FYI - Hilo bay is very Polluted too!
But glad your getting out of the house... hard to get a speeding ticket when your on the waves;)

I mostly remember the appearance of the water at Honoli'i (from the highway above), looking dark.
Sometimes downright NASTY brown, with runoff from the stream ... and during sugar-cane harvesting time?
Fuggeddaboudit!
Usually when it was that nasty, there were no surfers in the water ... but at all other times, I guess the break was just irresistible. I'm no surfer, but the waves' shape and action did look nice ...

Anyone remember "bagass"... that nasty leftovers from the sugar mill that were sent to the ocean and washed ashore at many places along the Hamakua Coast on the Big Island. I remember the old Hakalau Sugar Mill... it used to be right next to the ocean and the water was just filthy brown and filled with bagass. Ditto for Hilo Mill, Paahau Mill and I assume several others in those days.
Funny how the water looks nice and blue most of the time today, but is still considered "polluted". I guess all of that crap never really went away.

IIRC, Brandon is from California. I was raised in a SoCal beach community and the best that water looks is still not as good as the worst our waters look...except for the 6 week storm earlier this year! And, I'm not insinuating that the ocean off California is polluted as I don't know what the pollution factor is there; rather, it's just darker and not very clear.
Brandon...I've lived in Hawaii for 28 years and I'm still in awe of how beautiful the water is. That feeling never wanes!

My dad would always get bagasse (begasse?), I suppose from Puna Sugar, though I don't REALLY know where ... to use for mulch, etc. Ugh. Stuff was smelly. Worked great, was a reusable, earth-friendly resource that didn't harm the environment, but boy I used to hate emptying the truck of it and then pitchforking it into a wheelbarrow to be carted off and spread around various vegetables, plants, etc.
Ugh. As much as I've grumbled about the yard dudes and their gas-powered leaf-blowers, one thing I hate even worse -- based on personal experience -- is doing yard work myself!

Yeah the water here is better. Sometimes tastes better too! Anyways, the day I was out was really good, no run off I could see, and the stream was barely affecting it.
Wish I could go more often, but school and work take up my time. However, I am going to Maui for 4 days. Leaving on Saturday.

Brittni Paiva's got a tune about Honoli`i on her new CD, coming out mid-November, IIRC.
