I am normally a 007 fan. But somehow the new bond dude (Daniel Craig) just doesnt have the pazazz like Pierce Bronson, Moore or Connery. The action is good but 007 looks more like one of the bad guys! He reminds me of when George Lazenby took over, 007 lost the appeal of being James Bond. Connery had to come back in 1971 to keep the franchise alive after Lazenby almost killed it.

I think this prequel to the Bond movies will be fun to watch. I always wondered how James became 007. Usually, it's the Bond movie villains who have plans for world domination, but this time, it's Bond girl Caterina Murino who is likely to conquer the globe. You'll meet her in November's Casino Royale, where she plays Solange, wife of villain Dimitrios, who gets her revenge on her abusive husband by sleeping with a certain British spy. Sexy Bond girl in this one.

That's funny, cuz I kinda have the opposite opinion. I think Daniel Craig will make a really good Bond. In the past, I thought Pierce Brosnan would be perfect, but for some reason, I just didn't like the last few Bond movies with him starring. I even fell asleep in the theater watching the last one. That usually only happens when I get dragged by my wife to watch some romantic comedy.
Maybe it's because after watching the Bourne movies with Matt Damon, I prefer a grittier spy than one that makes cheesy quips with bullets flying all around. Craig seems like he'll be able to pull off that kind of Bond (ala Jason Bourne).
Also, rottentomatoes currently has it at 100% (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/casino_royale/) (though, there's only 5 reviews so far). Still yet, all of them praise the movie for being more realistic than the campy stuff that the past Bond movies have turned into, and all say that Craig is fantastic in the role. I'm planning to see it fer sure.

Ok. Cause of this Thread...I got "Gold Finger" stuck in my HEAD!!! :p
Goldfinger---Shirley Bassey lyrics
He's the man, the man with the midas touch.
A spider's touch.
Such a cold finger.
Beckons you to enter his web of sin
But don't go in.
Golden words he will pour in your ear,
But his lies can't disguise what you fear,
For a golden girl knows when he's kissed her,
It's the kiss of death from
Mister Goldfinger.
Pretty girl beware of this heart of gold
This heart is cold.
Golden words he will pour in your ear,
But his lies can't disguise what you fear,
For a golden girl knows when he's kissed her,
It's the kiss of death from
Mister Goldfinger.
Pretty girl beware of this heart of gold
This heart is cold.
He loves only gold,
Only gold.
He loves gold.
He loves only gold,
Only gold.
He loves gold.

I completely agree.
I recently saw the trailer for Casino Royale and it didn't seem like a Bond movie at all. In my mind that is a good thing!

as you know, it opens today :) am really looking forward to it.
i like the fact that it's so different from all of the other movies; going back in time to see bond before he became bond...

I'm a Bond fan and think "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" with Lazenby was one of if not the best Bond ever made. Different strokes.
At least the new guy seems big and strong. Moore, Dalton and Brosnan were too small to be believable in fight scenes. Connery looks like he could hurt somebody. Even still.

just got through watching the 11:30 am showing of it and it's... great! i'm not a huge bond fan but i enjoy the mindless escape. some were upset that the new bond is blonde but i could care less. what matters to me is the story and the acting and for what it's worth, i think this new movie has got both.
as others have mentioned, this bond actually has the physique (and attitude) to pull of the temporary suspension of disbelief.
another plus: far, far less dependence on gadgets and more on brawn and brains.
i won't say more for now; just that i think it's well done. a GREAT movie? nope, but it was fun, entertaining and even though it runs for almost 2.5 hours, i didn't want it to end.
(on an aside, check out daniel craig's other movie, layer cake. not surprisingly, it also got good, solid reviews. i think we'll be seeing a lot more of him. http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808624572/info )

hey konaguy, just a suggestion: take it easy on the colas before the movie! it runs about 2.5 hours and that's not including all the junk you have to sit through before the movie begins. i'd hate for you to squirm in your seat or have to miss a minute by running to the men's room! let us know what you think of the movie later....

Wow, 2.5 hours, oh my. I think the last movie I saw that long at the theater was Bad Boys II (which was 2 hours and 30 minutes long).
I usually don't drink anything before go the movies, so that shouldn't be a problem.I'll make sure to report tomorrow my thoughts on Casino Royale.

sinjin, i think we have similar tastes, although i'm not sure if for the same reasons. i very much like "on her majesty's secret service" for one reason: diana rigg. i've been impressed with her ever since 'the avengers' and still think of her as being smart and sexy; a woman with class. the ending scene (no need for spoilers here) is one that i like very much and i thought it was quite moving.
regarding your second point, once again i agree. it's hard to look at someone like roger moore and think that he's a world class fighter. his fight scenes are not convincing. by contrast, daniel craig has the body of a fighter and so his fight/chase scenes are far easier to believe. (the trailer for the movie shows him emerging from the ocean and there's no doubt that this guy is in good shape.)
i'd love to write more about the movie but it's too soon. after it's been out for a while, we can talk about stuff that should remain a surprise for you.
ps: did i say that i liked the movie? :D

oh, one last thing: please don't read reviews of the movie before watching it. just sit back and enjoy director campbell's adaptation of the 1953 ian fleming book...

:) Since I work early on Monday, it is likely I'll probably not be able to see it until Wednesday night. Which in a way is good, as I heard the movie theater here in Kona was busy on Friday night.

We were very pleasantly surprised at how much fun this movie was. I was skeptical about the new Bond, but he has a very strong screen presence in every sense of the word. Well worth seeing. It sure didn't seem as long as it was, unlike the last Pirates of the Car. movie which seemed at least 20 minutes too long. I may have a new favorite Bond actor. We're going to go see it again next weekend.

i'm not at all surprised that you feel that way (and glad you liked it :-)). that guy did a great job. i think the casting person(s) did a good job because they finally selected someone who has the physical characteristics that matches 007's persona...

Yeah the chase scene through the construction project was unreal. I was thinking, how they do that ? Overall there was a lot of impressive stunts in this movie.
The accountant was one of the more attractive Bond girls. But I have thing for brunettes. So thats not surprising lol :).

To be quite honest, I thought to myself that construction site chase scene gotta be special effects. A lot of those jumps were unreal and crazy. Especially for myself, since I'm afraid of heights. I never knew about that individual...

I saw Casino Royale this afternoon at Ward. The pre-credits scene was good, with Bond first kill's gun view of Bond which starts the signature start of a movie (minus him wearing a tux).
The construction chase scene makes you think one was watching a super hero kind of a movie. Of course I am wondering what happen to Bond's partner who fell in the pit with the Cobra and the Mongoose.
Like the Miami airport sequence.
The gadgets stuff wasn't that much and I sort of missed Q's lecturing Bond on the gadgets, maybe the next movie.
I wonder if Mr. White's organization is called Elpisis (or whatever it was on those cell phones during the Miami airport and after the construction chase scenes).

That was the pass code to access the secure area of Miami Int'l Airport. Recall the scene when Bond was chasing the soon to be bomber. The bomber entered the secure area, shutting the door behind him. Bond tries to get M to alert the authorities about a terrorist act. But then he looks at the bad guys cellular phone. He uses pass code Elpisis to access the
secure area.
