I'm off to bed, and I know I'll have nothing to do at work tomorrow. So go ahead, shoot off any questions and I'll try to answer'em.

You may take the philosophical route or the autobiographical route :P

Philosophically, I'm just another man on the earth.

Autobiographically...I'm the son of a single parent, born in HNL, raised in LIH (the cities, not the airports). In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching TV, shopping, playing basketball, and hanging out with friends. I work for a youth services agency. Sounds like a May Day bio from middle school? :p

I believed it. I focused on the headcoach's credentials and the team speed. Speed was equal, but I'd pick Erickson over Jones in a heartbeat. :o

I've seen them for over $10k just once. If it's over $10k, I think you're overpaying. I put that more as a hyperbolic price.

Hmm...not sure. At first thought, I came up with just 2: regular, and straight-laced. But then I figured, lacing the left side over the right side is one way, right side over the left side is another...bleh, I dunno...I hated combinations and permutations in algebra I. Ask scrivener :D

One thing that makes baseball so great is it's full of misnomers. Look at the strike--most of the time, it's not even hit (except for fouls on strikes 1 and 2).

had to look up these:
# Runner interference, in which a ground ball hits a runner who is called out, and the batter is awarded first base. -- (Incorrect- this is ruled as a hit, see rule 10.05e)

And why are there bruises all over my legs?

Good thing you ask. I work in drug-prevention, so I know a little about drinking grandpa's cough medicine...
Hangovers are caused by alcohol (a depressant and diuretic), which dehydrates your cells. Get lots of salt and potassium to help retain water and get rid of the nasty hangover feeling. Sugar helps in the short-run, but the carbohydrate "high" will leave you exhausted when it wears out. Gatorade, water, bananas, and ice cream are great. Make it even better--a banana split with lots of chocolate syrup and nuts, an ice cold glass of water, "My Best Friend's Wedding," a couch, and pajamas makes it a million times better during a hangover.

And about leg bruises...I am not sure. If your shins are bruised, that's why you have shins--they're the greatest tool for finding furniture in the dark.

As for KFC...I've been trying to find out myself. Kinda hard, 'cause they've been keeping only a handful of people privy to making the actual batter. But hold up--the recipe may change soon, if they manage to keep the taste the same while stripping their grub (except for those bad-@$$ biscuits) of trans fats.

I was on Kauai 5 weeks ago... what is your solution to the traffic congestion on Kauai?

Synchronize the traffic lights. Some traffic-lighted intersections are less than 1,000 feet away from each other, and sometimes you get past one light only to sit at another 5 seconds later.

Most of the island's highways are 2-laned. I'd say add at least one more lane all around--a serious accident 7-12 miles from Lihue can leave traffic backed up in Lihue for 3-5 hours because of lane closures!!!

Big employers (e.g. Marriott (Marri-rot to all you UH dormers), Hyatt, etc.) could provide vanpools. I see close to a hundred cars with only 1 person in'em every morning.

Increase the # of stops on every Kauai Bus route.

Plan areas to encourage pedestrian traffic. No one walks here 'cause things are spread relatively far apart. Also, walking on Kauai is seen as something only the homeless, drugged-out, or mentally handicapped people do.

All very good suggestions- except syncing the stop lights. They tried that with no success on Queen Kaahumanu Highway. The bad thing is more stop lights are popping like Coconut trees on Queen Kaahumanu.

Compounding that fact it seems HDOT is more content with adding more lanes to Queen Kaahumanu, than mitigating the real problem, all these stop lights. Please HDOT think out of the box, grade separation or a roundabout.

Since your in the field... what is the answer to Kauai's Drug Problem?

Mike_Lowery
October 31st, 2006, 09:32 AM
Since your in the field... what is the answer to Kauai's Drug Problem?

I think it's rooted in the cost of living. I specialize in drug use amongst youth, and I see that over 90% of them are from working-class families--most of the nuclear families. Parents are working overtime or multiple jobs, resulting in a bunch of latch-key kids. A lot of families I see are not together until 7-8 PM during the weekdays if not until the weekend. So you know how it goes--when the cat's away, the mice come out to play. Something like 75% of juvenile crimes are committed between 2 PM and 8 PM here.

Anyway, I think the drug problem is solved by keeping kids occupied with something healthier--sports, community service, volunteering, service learning, etc. But as a long-term solution: get back to the families. Youth drug abuse is a result of acting out in response to neglect by parents or just not having enough quality time together.

Tourism seems like a double-edged sword (well, more than double since it does multiple good and bad things) to me. Most of the state gets paid as a result of tourists being here. The brand of the aloha spirit that we market to tourists--it's really a euphimism for altruism and "serve the tourist so I can feed my kids who's using drugs and making babies"--but that's a whole other subject for discussion. What I'm trying to say is, we've become consumed with money as an ends instead of a means, but it's not Hawaii's fault. We got mortgages, cars, food, clothes, and tuition to worry about.

That's exactly the reason I posted! Well not for you... but I wanted to see his reaction... as the two are the scary ones!

Maybe Sun. 10/15 was the result of Her trying...

Tutusue, I ADORE your wit.

What a great way to answer an antagonizing question!

(No offense, Manoa, but people who try to disparage the Almighty God say stupid junk like that all the time.)

You could never offend me Ms. Engle!

And the question was out there for Mike not for Tutu... However, I liked her answer and will use the "Earthquake" answer anytime someone asks me that stupid question in the future.:)

Erika... How come no reports about the Rumble that Happened in Hilo last Weekend in the Paper? Or maybe I should ask Mike... since this is his thread:o

Dear Mike Lowery,

Is it going to rain tomarrow?

If so, what part of the islands will feel it most?

I can answer this one:rolleyes:

Yes it will rain tomorrow... where I don't know... in Hawaii... probably somewhere.

What part of the islands? I don't know... just yet... but I do know the Puget Sound has plenty islands... as well as many other island chains throughout the world, so I'm sure some islands will get rain somewhere...

So my question to ML to keep this on topic....

Why is Kauai considered the Garden Island when the Big Island has more gardens and far more "gardens" that export?

What is the specific Garden that one is suppose to see when going there?

What political party do you see yourself agreeing and supporting the most?

What religion do you follow if anyone?

Why do you have 60 pairs of shoes... other then being related to Imelda Marcos...?

And is that true that you are related to her?

Do you name your shoes?

What is your favorite brand of shoes?

And besides buying a new pair of shoes... how do you get Red Dirt off of the White Rubber surrounding some of the shoes?

I see myself agreeing with dems more often than any other party, but it seems like the lines dividing the different parties in hawaii are kinda sorta beginning to overlap.

I'm Roman Catholic

I have 60 pairs of shoes 'cause I'm hip hop. A sneakerhead, me. Gotta match it with shirts/jerseys, etc. I'm not exactly related to Imelda...Ferdinand's a blood relative.

Nope, shoes don't get names, but they are attributed attitudes.

Sneaks: I prefer Nike, Puma, or PF Flyers Dress: Gotta be Stacy Adams.

I never, ever get red dirt on the white parts of my shoes. I walk mostly on sidewalks or paved areas. My kicks get dirty, I get heated. I had a pair of white/white AF1's that got a little dirty once and got it pristine again with a toothbrush and Fantastik. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a90/thealmightymiranda/smileys/thumbsup.gif

It will rain on Kauai and Windward Oahu. Expect 3" in the Kaneohe-Kahaluu area again. Waianae will probably feel it most, as they will be extremely jealous of the rain the other side of the island will get. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a90/thealmightymiranda/smileys/laugh.gif

Any day's a beach day if you're willing to drive to a dry part of the island! :p

As for me, I hate getting in the water. The smell of suntan lotion is scustin' http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a90/thealmightymiranda/smileys/puke.gif

This thread was started on a whim to help Mike_Lowery pass the time after a slow day at work. It was a heap of fun, but some people were getting tedious... and the day had ended, anyway.

If you still want to ask Mike_Lowery a question, send him a Private Message (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=2876). If you have further comments on the thread closure, please contact me.
