I've goofed around with the guitar since I was a teen many moons ago. Recently I bought a bass and have been having fun being humbled by the touch required to sound good.

But...I am a virtuoso at playing the STEREO!

Guitar. I can fake it on bass, keys and drums. I sing, too. My music keeps me from going insane. Barely.

To all of you that play an instrument... my hat goes off to you.:)

I wish I had musical abilities.

Thank you all for making this world a happier place to live in...whatever style of music you play.

Music is a "universal language." I started with the ukulele (it was taught at my elementary school) when I was 10, then "graduated" to the electric guitar at 17. I am just one of the thousands of nameless and faceless garage musicians spawned during the 1960s. Today, I still "fut around" playing "oldies" with other musician friends. Oh, I can get by with the bass, too.

The one instrument I wish I could have also learned is the piano/keyboards.

These days, primarily `ukulele & electric bass (plus singing.)
In the past: drums, keyboards, flute, mandolin/bouzouki.
(Thanks for not asking what I play well.)

Been playing the alto and bari sax for 14 years now. Not really a fan of the tenor or soprano saxes. The kazoo's been no problem.

Man, Leo Lakio...I wanna learn the mandolin and start a Filipino rondalla. Is it difficult to play?

In order of proficiency, Guitar, Piano, Drums, Harmonica, Recorder, Bass, Trumpet. I also own, but do not claim to play, a banjo, ukulele, Irish Tin Whistle, and many kinds of percussive noisemakers. I do not sing. Used to play a lot of music back in the day, before marriage, fatherhood, homeownership, et al. I want to learn the many songs I love on ukulele here in Hawaii. I started playing guitar at age 12 and took a few courses of piano & trumpet in college. Also played off and on for years with a variety of people at garages, parties, and my living room.

If you can't make a living at it, it's hard to find the free time to play music.

When I was a kid, I had piano lessons, but I wasn't so interested in the piano.

Now I'm trying to get started with the Sitar.

In order of when I played them first:

Singing, recorder (sometimes with my nose! lol), clarinet, bassoon, guitar, alto sax, tuba, bass trombone. I've always been a bando and had the luck of growing up in the midwest where band is huge! After HS and college, I had the opportunity to be in a Senior Drum and Bugle corps where I played a tuba equivalent (instrument was different key so not a tuba technically) But singing has been the best for me. Everyone in my immediate family sings. My dad had a band in the Philippines and met my mom through that band. Both my little brother and i sing and I even have a relative in the UK that sings in broadway style musicals there! One major problem though. I'm UBER shy so it's loads of singing in the car for me lol.

Instruments I'd LOVE to learn though?!?

Ukelele is one for sure. I'm hoping that on my next trip out, I can find a relatively inexpensive beginer Ukelele at the flea market. Not one like you'll find in most tourist shops which barely stay in tune but a decent beginer one.

Cello. Such a soothing sounding instrument. I've Always wanted to learn to play but never had the time.

Banjo. Kinda hokey but just seems like a fun instrument to play hehe.

I wanna learn the mandolin and start a Filipino rondalla. Is it difficult to play?Difficult to play? Not really. Difficult to play WELL? Like most instruments, yes. I'm drawn to it because I love the sound; the bouzouki even more so due to it being the same tuning, but in a lower register (like the difference between violin and 'cello.)I want to learn the many songs I love on ukulele here in Hawaii.Do it, Tim, just do it - you already have musical skill, so I doubt it would take you long. Chop away at whatever keeps you from it (and years from now, we can kanikapila.)Instruments I'd LOVE to learn though?!? Ukelele is one for sure. I'm hoping that on my next trip out, I can find a relatively inexpensive beginer Ukelele at the flea market. Not one like you'll find in most tourist shops which barely stay in tune but a decent beginer one.You can get great `ukulele without going to the Islands. If you want to pick my brain, PM me with the kinds of things you are looking for in an instrument.

Started with accordion. Dropped it when I got to junior high school. Picked up a guitar my freshman year of college (still own it) and bought an electric one a couple of years later. Haven't played either in umpty-ump years. I have an electronic keyboard but haven't really tried to learn it, which is dumb.

I was surprised to discover when I got the keyboard that I could still sight-read.

Played piano and took lessons during grammar school. Played the guitar during high school. Both instruments my dad could play by ear so I had a live-in coach! Haven't touched either instrument in over 40 years. Now I play iTunes and hope to learn GarageBand!

I play bass guitar now, in a few bands here and there, and currently have a blues&roll project in the works. I've played lower brass instruments for close to 25 years starting with the baritone horn, then tuba, then trombone, which is pretty much what I've stuck with since then. I played all the way through UH in the symphonic wind ensemble, then when I moved to Idaho I played in the Pocatello Municipal band, then played in the town band in the place I lived in Japan. I haven't played my horn much since moving back to Hawaii, sadly.

I think admin should move this thread to "The Jukebox".

That said over the years I have dabbled in ukelele, piano and trumpet. Way back in my intermediate school days I was a band member and we played at parades and ball games. Band was a good way to get out of some classes and attend ball games for free. Marching in the rain following horses at the night time Christmas parade in Kamuela was not much fun.

What I got out of band is that I can read music, which I guess is a good thing. I can play stuff on the treble clef side of the scale on piano but have difficulty grasping the bass clef side since trumpets never went too low.

It's been years since I blew a horn.

I used to be pretty good on guitar. And, during one chapter of my life, I mastered "spoons" (don't laugh - spoons go great with ukuleles and beer!). Humm ..... maybe it was a Windward Oahu thing.... I have not heard any spoons in Kona.....

The only oboe joke I've heard is:

Why do oboists put their oboes in clarinet cases? So they won't get stolen!

But seriously, it's cuz I accidently left my oboe case on the top of my truck and someone snatched it. It was later found in some bushes on campus - guess they figured it was a little light and took a look to see they stole an empty case

I'm pretty good with the guitar and ukulele. Been playing both since I was 6 or 7. My buddies and I will have jam sessions a few times a month. My bro-in-law is really musically gifted. He can hear a song on the radio then just start playing it on his guitar. He doesn't even know how he does it. Wish I had that kind of innate talent. I was thinking of signing up for a classical guitar course next quarter.

I can mess around on the piano, but have no formal training. Like, I can play "Take me out to the Ballgame" and other junk sports songs like that.

I also kick ass at drums! Actually, no I don't. I suck really hard, is what everyone tells me. But to my finely attuned ears, I'm pretty damn good! :)

Tim, I must say, I'm surprised to see that you're a muzo....from your online persona, I had you pegged as a jock (sorry!)

Me.... Guitar is my main instrument, but I play bass, some keys, some drums and percussion...played baritone horn in school, and can fudge on a few brass instruments....trumpet,tuba,trombone.

Can't hardly utter a note on any of the orchestral string instruments...cello,violin etc. Those are hard instruments to play.

I'm also learning to play hawaiian lap steel guitar (it's the tuning that makes it hawaiian) That's a challenge too.

With the aid of a computer I can create the sound of a full orchestra. :-)

Oh, and when I sing I sound like Bon Scott from AC/DC

I play play the piano some and guitar. Sing harmony on most songs. If you want to hear some good soul music, go to www.sellaband.com and listen to a guy from Hawaii called Cubworld. He's rockin'.

I hope he makes it to the recording studio soon to represent Hawaii.
Maybe we can all get behind him and help him get there?

Thanks (sniff) it took years of practice and dedication to get it right...then Phase Lock Loop (PLL Circuitry) came in and now anyone can play a radio with little or no talent at all! What a travesty! Heck it's so easy now you can play a radio while driving a car! :D
