I'll try to keep my schedule clear to attend. Can this be in downtown so that I can just catch a ride w/ auntie? Its humbug to catch the bus from downtown to Waipahu, then go back anywhere else.

K-den. If the Race is on the 10th den we should make it on the 8th so Randy gets enough rest on the 9th. Are you available on the 8th?

I just thought of something. I can get "Dragon" upstairs of "Hanks" for free from my friend and owner ~ Hank! It's where Karl Rhoads had his Party on Election Night. It's cozy, private and clean.

We just pay for the drinks. We can bring our own Pot Lock.

There's also a Piano and Sound System!

Dat would be on a Friday.

It appears that December 8th is going to be some kind of day for me. First, some running friends from Kaneohe have invited me to attend the big pre-race party at the Waikiki Shell. For the most part, the "luau/concert" as the Honolulu Marathon web site calls it, is a standard all-one-can-eat carbo loading party typical at most big city marathons held in the USA. Only thing different here is that Honolulu usually provides well-known entertainers as well; this year runners and their guests get Gavin DeGraw (who I've personally never heard of) and Jake Shimabukuro, who was at the luau last year.

Then...I get to party with some HT'ers after the luau is all pau. Like I said, some kind of day! Fortunately, I will have Saturday to rest up for running what I think is one of the two best marathons in the USA, despite what some residents of Hawaii Kai think of it!

Whenever (if) this party does take-off as planned, I will be there, albeit a little bit later than the proposed 6PM start. It sounds like it could be a good time if we can get a decent turnout.

No worries it will. Having Members of both Forums come together ~ we WILL have a great turn out! I've received several responses already via email.;)

Now we just have to decide on where to hold it. Most likely at Oceans. Ok everybody? Christa, I'll PM you with my number so we can get the ball rolling!

Wherever it is, I'll make an attempt to be there, but be aware that Ocean is a club, and that at some point, if not immeidately, it's going to be dark and noisy. If that's the atmosphere we want for this thing, cool. If not, perhaps another option is out there. Unless I'm totally wrong about what it's like there after dark.

Isn't Oceans also Age 23 and over? (which might limit some HT users)

And yes... it is definately a club...and if you arrive there around 7 - 8 you may be waiting a few hours to get in.

I don't mean to be a pessimist Auntie Lynn...

However, the 8th is the Friday before the Honolulu Marathon... and the Roads are gonna be crazy as state and government employees get their paychecks on the 5th... and that Friday Evening will be the first time to shop for x-mas presents after that...

Plus the 30,000 or so people that will be participating in the Marathon will make anywhere in Wakiki pretty crowded...

However, if you can settle on some plans ASAP... I can tell you whether or not I can or can not make it.... I can't confirm till things get more commited...

And now you know why I never like host one Manoa's Get together!:p

I know it's the Friday before The Honolulu Marathon ~ Surfingfarmboy comes to Oahu to participate in it!

I don't think anyone will suggest Waikiki as a place to hold our gathering.

There are many places in Honolulu that have Private Rooms in their establishments.

Here is a possible alternative... I know some of us are already planning on going to the game this day.... just throwing this out there.... I dunno... Just because it's at aloha stadium doesn't mean you have to attend the game...etc...

Dec. 2nd Aloha Stadium Parking lot 3:30 for a Tailgate/HT/X-mas thing...

Those that are already are planning on going to the game... were already there...just because of the Game...

Those that don't want to go to the game... can still Tailgate for a couple hours before the game?

Inspired by surfingfarmboys post: http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showpost.php?p=112561&postcount=25

Of course we tailgate which means food/beer/talk story...etc...

Otherwise... I'm still waiting from 1stwahine on a final place and time as she seems to be the starter of this shindig....

I'm just trying to throw out some other options...(and it's only $3.00) for a car load of people to get into the stadium.... we could all meet at a pre set place...and follow eachother into the stadium....or just work the cell phone magic that so many others do...

However, that day... if we still haven't lost a game... it's gonna be a pretty big crowd.... so if you do want tickets to the actual game....

I suggest purchasing them in advance...
http://uhathletics.hawaii.edu/tickets.html

Just throwing this out there....As I will be at the game any how....and I'm sure there will be some others of us from HT also there.

I'm going to both events noted in this thread. I will be attending both the OSU/UH football game and Auntie Pupule's hui of HT'ers. That said, I'm certain to add to the growing list of HT'ers I've met in person.

I agree with Manoa that the football game on Dec. 2 should be heavily attended...if it's not, why? If UH has run the table against the remaining teams on the schedule, that OSU game ought to be huge. In my opinion, the OSU game is going to be almost the "real" bowl game UH will play in this year; nobody the C-USA will bring over to the Hawaii Bowl is in the league with any Pac-10 member. (I really wish UH could somehow have made it into a bigger mainland bowl...that's how good I think they are this season.)

In any event, I bought my ticket to the OSU game last week at etickethawaii.com, and the best ticket I could get was in the Diamond Head end zone, about 29 rows up from Wili the Warrior. (Section EE, Row 29). And this was after putting numerous request to find a really good ticket. Usually, I can get a sideline seat on the makai side with no problem. Not this game. So if one wants to get into this game, it might be a good idea to get tickets now. I have indicated to other HT'ers that I will be meeting up with them at this game. It sounds like this will be a great opportunity to meet many of you HT'ers who support Na Koa. E O!

As for the bash on December 8..I'm going to be there as well, though like I said, I'm going to be running a bit late from the previous commitment to pre-race pasta meal at the Waikiki Shell. I don't think Auntie will mind! I promise I won't be too late!

Possible places to have the party on a Wed evening:

WARD: free parking, central HNL location, easy to find, reasonably priced places
--the rooftop bar at Dave and Busters (it's relatively quiet at that hour, there's plenty of space, they have food/drinks for adults and stuff to amuse kids (accompanied by adults)
--Campadres
--Old Spaghetti Factory

ALOHA TOWER: parking not free, but central HNL location, easy to find, reasonably priced
--Gordon Biersch (big restaurant with outdoor/indoor area, drinks, can accomodate large numbers of people)
--Tower Grill (new restaurant at Aloha Tower, relatively spacious)
--Don Ho's
--Campadre's

Lots of restaurants in Ala Moana that aren't overly expensive and have free parking:
--CPK
--Jackie's Kitchen
--Macaroni Grill
--Ruby Tuesday

I know that aren't the most exciting choices, but when you are looking for a place for lots of people of all ages that is centrally located and has decent parking, ya gotta sometimes settle for something more generic food-wise...

Whatever you choose, though, ya gotta make reservations soon. Everything that can accomodate larger groups gets booked up in Dec because of all the holiday parties for businesses, families, etc.

AbsolutChaos makes some good suggestions, but here's another option we might think about. Rather than a sit-down restaurant or a bar, where we'd be obligated to spend money on whatever the location has to offer, what we really need is a room. Does anyone here live in a condo building with a party room, or is anyone the member of a community association that has party rooms, like in Newtown/RoyalSummit or Mililani? Give us a room where we can bring our own stuff and make as much noise as we'd like, and we'll have a blast. If we can't do that, I'd nominate a park somewhere that's safe at night. If I could think of one.

I know you're just throwing the idea out there but the obvious thing that comes to my mind is traffic and parking. Those not attending the game would be taking up valuable parking spaces for those attending the game. Or, does the parking lot capacity far exceed my expectations? I can only speak for myself that I would not be willing to wait in traffic, such as a big game generates, for an HT get together. No offense to any HTer!

Best Western The Plaza Hotel

Fax: 808-834-7406

Dinner: Sunday, Monday, Friday, Saturday 5 - 9 pm
Located at Best Western The Plaza Hotel, lobby level.

Party Room available.

Adults $23.95

Children $ 11.95

Buffet Crab Legs, Prime Rib, Fried Shrimp, Fried Chicken, Salad Bar and Desserts. Some other entrees but the lady told me to call back tomorrow to talk with Charlene.

Another suggestion from Blaine: :I like Sushi Locomotion in Salt Lake Shopping Center, too. Their sushi is cheap, good, plenty and the atmosphere laid back. No reservations, just walk in, sit down and take over. BYOB.

The only thing I might have against this idea is that with Dec being a month full of gift-buying and other holiday-related spending, it might be better to go with either a potluck or dine at a place with a menu where people can choose to eat as little or as much--and spend as little or as much--as they feel comfortable.

After all the holiday parties full of rich food, I must admit that I'd rather avoid a buffet, because I feel I should eat as much as possible to justify the cost of the buffet. :o

Another suggestion via Email:

For something like this – I always try to plan as if I have to get there & home on my own so look for bus access or close enough for taxi. If folks can’t afford buying drinks or food, they probably shouldn’t plan on coming or they can just stop by to say hello. And with all the Xmas shopping craziness, who has time to fix a potluck dish? Spaghetti Factory at Ward Warehouse has an upstairs that can be reserved probably, their food is cheap & good and they have full bar service. Many people don’t have transportation and let’s face it – you can’t pick up & deliver everyone & besides, don’t you want to have some fun? Ward Warehouse is right on a bunch of bus lines, has free parking and is open to kids.

Just a question....please don't kill me for this....Does it HAVE TO be in Honolulu / Waikiki area ? Being that it's going to be overrun with runners (nice pun, eh?), the crowds may make it very difficult for getting around and parking. I'm guessing alot of you locals live in "town" but what about areas like Hawaii Kai ? The Shack is supposed to be a cool place.

I'm not local, so I don't know what that entails for you guys living in town....cars etc.... I'm stayng in Kailua, anyone willing to go that way, maybe to Buzz's or something similar.

The idea of Dukes is out ? I know your last HT party there seemed like a blast.

Theres a big difference between negativeness and constructive criticism.

FYI - Kitchen closes at 8:00 so hopefully late stragglers can order food before then.
While the kitchen closes at 8 p.m. nightly, it's worth a trip to La Mariana for a bite to eat. Menu items haven't changed much over the decades; the ahi poke ($11.50) we tried was excellent, and the order of mozzarella cheese ($9) was amazing!

Not to sound negative... I really also do like the potluck idea much more than La Mariana.

Kakaako Waterfront where the HT Anniversary picnic was held was a nice place....

Just throwing more things out there...

Maybe a Poll could be made on where the best location should be for this?

I'm down for anywhere... really.... no matter to me:)

The Friday Evening thing... das the only buggah that's bothering me so much! I wish this could be a weekend daytime thing some how just my two cents...

I'd be ok with potluck outdoors too, but probably not the wisest option on a Fri night.

December 2nd....

Since many of us will be blocking the second half of this day off already for the OSU GAME and many of HT users would care less to tailgate...

Why can't we kill two birds with one stone? Have an HT luncheon somewhere like say someplace like Kakaako Waterfront Park around 1:00 - 3:00 (plenty of parking)... then those that are going to the game... can actually do a true tailgate to the game from there and continue things in the parking lot of the stadium before the kick off. (This way we all stick together and are able to park together.... etc... )

So????

You do know Rudolph saved Christmas:rolleyes:

"Manoa, the Brown-nosed reindeer
had a very Brown nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it gets tan.

All of the other HT users
used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Manoa
post in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Admin came to say:
"Manoa with your nose so brown,
won't you quit being a clown"

Then all the HT Users loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
Manoa the Brown-nosed reindeer,
you'll go burn in infamy."

Happy Holidays to all!

Hope everyone can attend this event!

Besides that... No one want's to see me twice in public in one week as I will be doing the OSU game.

Holiday seasons... so many things to do... so much to buy... so many priorities...

Anyway ... I think that is an excellent choice of venue! And Manoa, I HATE potlucks. I think the idea of a potluck sucks big time. It is the worst idea EVER. And you kept posting "How about this date, how about that date" HOURS after Lynn posted the definite date, and even after she posted the venue! So shut up already! Fo' reals, dude!

Huh? "If things get organized...then maybe I'll show"? Lynn managed to organize the party in spite of all of your whining and trying to control the outcome, Manoa. She set a date that is convenient for our 2 mainland HTers and a location that got positive response. That date is not contingent upon whether or not you can attend. I probably can't attend either but that's my problem...just like your unwillingness to attend for your pi$$y reasons is YOUR problem. It is not Lynn's problem at all.

Huh? "...way out sand island"? Good grief, Oahu is a small island fer crissake! It's a short hop from Waikiki. Traffic's another story but it affects everything 24/7 now. Take the bus, esp. if you want to drink. I admire that you don't want to drink and drive but that's not a good enough reason to organize a party around your parameters. There are other modes of transportation.

Huh? "...and not a place I want to leave my car"? I, personally, have not heard of any car thefts or vandalism involving La Mariana. I've parked there many, many times...no problem. How the he!! could LM stay in business for over 50 years if they had security problems with their parking?

Manoa...please stop whining when something doesn't go your way. It's really unbecoming for someone your age. :(

Sorry, but I won't be able to make it.

Vegas cleaned me out last week, and I gotta pull double shifts for the next few weekends to afford Christmas gifts for my ohana. So that means no Christmas party this Friday, or UH game on Saturday. :(

On the bright side, my coworker said she made over $500 in tips last weekend, so maybe I'll make some serious dinero this weekend. But then again, she's smoking hot and generally gets better tips than me. A pox on all customers that give better tips to hot girls! (though admittedly, I do the same thing. Hell, who doesn't)

I checked out the place earlier tonight, and you gotta watch out for the sign. I believe its the first road in after the turn, and I missed it on my first past.

At the facility itself, I saw a packed parking lot of maybe 5 to 8 cars - I believe they were double parked or triple parked, but there's empty spaces along side the road.

Finally, is this a seafood place, or will they serve us land lovers?

Oh, and I forgot to shop for the grab bag. I'll put it on my list of things to do tomorrow.

Based on what Adrian is saying, it sounds like parking over at La Mariana is pretty tough. Is the street parking relatively okay over there in its vicinity? You know, parking on the street in the Sand Island area is tough to come by during the weekday...most of the side streets makai of Nimitz usually are packed by early AM. I'm guessing it should be a bit easier to gert come pau hana on Fridays.

It looks like I'm actually gonna be able to make La Mariana. That'll be two firsts in one night. I'm psyched. I'm only going to know Auntie Lynn, as far as I know, so if yall see a skinny haole guy looking lost with a whiskey coke in his hand a little after 7pm, that's me. Hi!

It was my honor to serve as Aunty Lynn's alternate surprise guest this evening. Timkona said it -- the mix of personalities and intellects in that cozy corner of La Mariana made it probably the highest concentration of brilliance (and eccentricity) on the island at that moment. It was good to see some old fr... I mean, treasured, long-time friends. And, especially, to meet some new faces.

Special thanks to the grand dame of the combined 'ohana, Aunty Lynn, for helping to make it happen.

Probably not a huge dent. The restaurant was understaffed and our waitress (was she the only waitress last night?) was trying to keep up as best she could.
(Was she there last night, by the way? I know her health has been less than perfect recently.)
I got there at 6:45 and saw her in the office. It appeared her aide was helping her to head on upstairs. Maybe she was at her 'command post' prior to 6:45. Dunno. I did see her in the restaurant a couple of weeks ago during lunch. Gotta give Annette credit. At 92...or is it 94?...she still loves that restaurant enough to make an almost daily appearance. It wasn't but a couple of years ago that she would spend her evenings walking from table to table greeting every customer.

They had two servers, I believe. If I recall correctly, there were several semi-large groups there last night. I really like the place, though...and I can't wait to go there again.

D'Alani and I came up with a system to make sure that the drinks kept flowing -- order another one right when she places the drink in front of you!

I did see her in the restaurant a couple of weeks ago during lunch. Gotta give Annette credit. At 92...or is it 94? I stopped asking when she hit 70... about 40 years ago. :p
I've been in there 3 or 4 times in the last 2 months and she was there each time, greeting everyone as usual, though she had a friend helping her get around.
Wonder if she's had any offers on the business yet. Listed at $2 million, as I recall. Heyyyyy... maybe Auntie Lynn and her mom oughta buy it?! Can you imagine La Mariana run by Auntie Pupule? WheeeHAW!

Yep...it appears Annette has full time help now. I've noticed instead of walking from table to table, she now sits at the table just beyond Corky, where she can see everyone who enters the restaurant. She greets them as they pass by. If the attendant is close by then she'll approach the tables, with assistance.

OMG...I'd have to retire in order to spend 24/7 at La Mariana!!! Go for it, Auntie! Seriously, one of the stipulations on the sale of LM is that Annette be allowed to live out her remaining days in her 2nd story apt. I hope whomever buys the business not only preserves the essence of LM but also makes Annette's remaining days as comfortable and happy as possible. She deserves it.
You talking about Annette or Auntie Lynn?
:D
Both!!! :D

I don't have $ 2 Million! :o :p

And if I did...Yes! I would buy L.M. in a heartbeat, make Annette live her final days and nights there. I would keep everything as is. However, I would change the menu to inclue a mixture of Authentic Hawaiian Foods, Local Grinds as well as the usual dining favorites as Steaks, Sea Foods and Pastas!

Ahhhhh...to dream the impossible dream!

Whoever buys the L.M. should keep it the way it is. It is one of Hawaii's remaining last treasures that should be preserved. Old Hawai'i can never be returned but memories of it can still be felt by going to L.M. and be taken back in time while dining.

Auntie...there's no such thing as an impossible dream. Go for it. There's nothing to say you can't make an offer...no money down...take care of Annette. Make her an emotional offer she can't refuse. IIRC, she has no relatives; no heirs. The worst she can do is say 'no'.

There ya go! Tell her about your years of experience in the local food industry. Tell her how you feel about the ambiance of La Mariana and how important it is to preserve what little remains of "old Hawaii". Explain your desire for her to remain on the property. Don't forget to add that you might not be rich in money, but you are rich in spirit. And, be sure to let Annette know that if anyone else buys the place and changes it to anything but what it is now, you'll personally administer a barrage of ...WHACK WHACKS! :D

If ya don't go to bat, Auntie...ya can't hit a home run.

Auntie,

You acquiring the La Mariana would be stellar....I agree about the menu. I think it could use a little modification. You'd have about 4000 new fans if you DID buy LM, cos all of kicentral.com would be eternally grateful...it's pretty much Mecca for Tikiphiles.

I was too busy talking to everyone to take all the photos I planned to take of the place....then again, ryan and blaine got plenty. When I'm back on the mainland I'll be blogging my trip so, if anyone would care to donate any photos of the night, I'll be grateful.

What a terrific night !!

Auntie Lynn, you are beautiful. :) Thank you for the clock.
Cranberee and DD - my daughter is still doing magic tricks with money.
Manoa - That kid of yours is just perfect. Thanks for the gift.
Tikiyaki - call me in Kona. I got some connections.

I wish I could have sat next to all of you at the same time. I want to talk with the rest of you sometime.

My faith in the notion of the beautiful, smart woman has been completely bolstered by the bumper crop of gorgeous intellect at that table.

La Mariana was a great place for the party. Waitresses were overworked and understaffed. My steak was perfect. Taya's ahi was perfect.

I think I'm gushing.

Thank you all so much. Merry Christmas !
