View Full Version : Live African Watering Hole Cam

Has this already been posted? If it hasn't, check it out: watering hole (http://www.wavelit.com/index.asp?ch=Wildlife&sh=africam). It's pretty cool.

My daughters and I were watching it last night and saw a rhino come in for a drink, and some hyenas too. You can go a half hour or more just staring at an empty puddle of water, but then something cool like an elephant or zebra will come in. Also, if you turn up the sound, you can hear crickets chirping and everything.

(there's also a bear cam link on the upper right).

Thats cool, Marco- I minimized it,*cuz I'm at work, and kept the speakers on...so like i can hear the crickets singing. Some one finally asked, " is there a cricket in here?" LOL, Laughing to myself- not mentioning anything about the site...lol

* their still looking around for the cricket, heee, heee *

It's cool! I watched a bug crawl on the camera for a while and about 50 bats...one at a time! It's like a creep Fear episode....I am waiting for the ghosts to pop up!

Because I'm the impatient kind, can someone post pictures of animals there? :D

I thought at first that they were shooting stars but realized that they were far too low.

Bioluminescence? Giant African Firefly? :)

Oh...COOL! Two hyenas just crossed frame but didn't stop to drink.

There's one now!!!!! What's interesting to me is the sound of the animal drinking (loud) is totally out of proportion to where the animal is (it's very small in frame and toward the back of the pond which indicates to me that the camera is a bit of a distance away. Maybe the pond is mic'd :D ).

Speaking of Africa, I know I mentioned my daughter visited Africa last month for 2 3 day safaris and a 6 day hike up and down Mount Kilimanjaru. She got some great photos (http://www.kodakgallery.com/ShareLandingSignin.jsp?Uc=2hjakc0p.6j6rkpyd&Uy=-2lxwr6&Upost_signin=Slideshow.jsp%3Fmode%3Dfromshare&Ux=1) esp. of animals. Warning...it's the Kodak site which requires registration and they do send 'spam' a couple of times a week.

This is a great site!

BTW, there are links on the original site that Marco posted that will take you to many cams around the world!

Too bad I have to work for a living. :(

Their are literally many webcams around the world that have live streams?

Any local ones that you enjoy?

I like this one over at UH Hilo.

Well this isn't exactly local and the cam is offline right now but in the spring I love watching the peregrine falcons nest at 55 Water Street in Manhattan. There is a nesting box with several cameras focused on it and you can see the pair nesting, the eggs hatching, and the chicks growing until they finally leave the nest.

A little embarrassing when you start screaming stuff like "DON'T JUMP!!!" as they get close to the edge of the building.

There were two chicks last year. Very cute:

HA! I saw a gazelle or deer...I think it was a gazelle! A really thirsty and VERY nervous one! Kept jumping up and jerking back! Then he ran across the screen.....hmmm....~need to get a life, I do~

The background noises sure makes it real! I'm at home ATM, so only now I have my speakers on.

And I bet since daylight is almost there, there'll be a lot of animals.

EDIT: WM11 either doesn't like this cam, or it hate FF2, as I can't see anything w/out scrolling my screen.

I'm wondering if this thing is solar powered? How is it running? What type camera? etc.

The evening pictures from this morning looked almost like night vision... now that it's getting lighter over there...it's more visible.

I saw that too! Did you see the 10 Zebras about 15-20 min before the gazelle? They started in from the right on the far side of the hole and when they left, a mare and her foal (if that's what they're called) came over to the near side! Too cool! Extremely addicting once you see something.

Course... It helps that I've got the cam on and watching Ghosthunters at the moment... Leap Castle in Ireland. UBER creepy!

BTW, the camera switched from night vision to regular. The trees are green now.

Making the observation that it is daylight in Africa at 5:30 in the morning is not a wise-ass remark, no matter what your little brain might believe.

And instead of worrying about the actions of other users on HT, you really should focus on cutting down the idiocy in your own posts first.

Posting it with a question mark is questioning... it's not observing. And believe it or not... at many places in the world at 5:30 am it's still dark.... (here in Hawaii!)

You have snarked over Windward's posts all day on different threads and now you just switched to this one.... Look at some of her posts today on different threads and then look who's the first to say something against what she said.

I guess it's her turn to get the PJ treatment... as you seem to like to give it out to everyone else...

Back on Subject...

The next time I see something cool... I'm gonna screen capture it... and attempt to compress it so that I can post it here to show that there is some cool action everyonce in a while on it!

EDIT update: Sorry PJ!!! Maybe you were observing... it's just youv'e been all over windrn for a while...

Umm... NO SHIT, SHERLOCK. Which is why I posted what I did. And it's laughable that you think you can give others punctuation lessons. Like I said before, you really have enough on your plate with your own idiotic statements.

Yes, because God forbid I have a different opinion than she does. I posted twice in one thread. Nice to know I've got you stalking me.

I guess it's her turn to get the PJ treatment... as you seem to like to give it out to everyone else...
Again, all the attention you're giving me is flattering, but you really do have your head stuck up your butt. Keep making dumb comments, and I'll keep calling you on it. If that's the "PJ treatment," so be it. You deserve it.

That was really cool. Thanks!

No problem :)

I wanna see some real action... a tiger take out a zebra or something!
Well, I'm by no means an expert, but I'm pretty sure there aren't any tigers in Africa. I think tigers are only still in the wild in Asia, so I wouldn't expect to see a tiger anytime soon.

Wow, those are some great pics! I've always wanted to go on a safari. I'm a National Geographic and Animal Planet slut. Is it too intrusive to ask how expensive the trip was that your daughter took? If it is, no worries. I was just wondering cuz it's something I plan to do later in life.

So, am I the only one here who's seen a rhino at the watering hole? I guess I must be special then, yeah?

NOT! :p

Here's the web page (http://www.tropical-ice.com/kili.htm). I couldn't find the price but I believe it was not for the faint of financial heart...somewhere in the $12K range including airfare from L.A. There were only 3 guests on her journey and the other 2 were people she knew...and 15 porters! I don't know if the # of porters might've changed if the full capacity of 8 guests had signed up. Regardless, 5 porters per guest allowed for a very nice, albeit strenuous, excursion. My daughter loved it but was distraught over the poverty she saw. From a mom's point of view, experiencing that poverty was worth the price of the trip, esp. since I didn't pay for it! I was really, really glad that it bothered her...a lot.

Thanks. And to TutuSue---my audio matches the action in the video.

Last night there was an antelope with what appeared to be her youngster. The young guy had the worst time trying to reach down to the water level to drink. Circled the watering hole numerous times, with Mom letting out with the most piercing screaming sounds. She seemed annoyed. She finally stopped when he gave in and stuck his legs in the mud to reach the water.

The cries of Mom matched the activity.

I've got a Mac... there's a keystroke that lets you take a screencap.

Yeah I'm not sure what's up with tutu's computer... my audios seems to match up fine too. I'm actually amazed at how good it is!

But I'm still waiting to see a scrap... it just seems so awkward all these different species getting along over one source of water.... you know if they were humans they'd be fighting eachother over it by now!

Yes, the action matches but I'm so curious as to why the decibal level doesn't! The camera is at a somewhat high angle and far enough away to capture that wide angle. The camera could, of course, have a wide angle lens on it but, still, the sound level is loud for what the video is projecting. My daughter told me that in order for her not to sit and stare at the screen she just turned up the volume because she can hear an animal walking around and that grabs her attention. I decided there's a sound guy out of frame who's mic'ing the animals! :D There...problem solved!!!

My curiosity got the best of me so I emailed a friend of mine who's a sound mixer. Here's what she said:

"They probably have a long shotgun mounted to the camera, as that is what a lot of wildlife photographers and sound partners do. That is what i did. But what I saw and listened to it sounded that they had the mic pointed in a more covered area, like into the bush.

Very cool and am going to email it to our good wildlife filmmaker friends who live in the bush and make wildlife films there. Their latest was just on Nat geo -- Eye of the leopard."

My curiosity has been satisfied! :D

I haven't been able to spend much time watching this very interesting site but currently have the streaming video going and for the first time saw the camera zoom in. I've seen it pan and tilt but this was the first zoom...somewhat close up of 2 birds in the watering hole. Now the camera is panning, tilting and zooming! Who's operating that thing and where are they located?

GeckoGeek
November 18th, 2006, 12:22 AM
The camera has quite a bit of zoom. When I was watching, it went from the whole watering hole to close up scanning of the brush across the clearing looking for animals that were watching from the edge.
