I just saw a car matching your car's description going eastbound on the H1 near Waikele. It whizzed past me on the left. I didn't follow it because I'm trying not to get any more tickets for awhile, but I did memorize the plate number just in case. I tried to call the newsroom to have someone look up your post, but I couldn't get through on my cell, for some reason.

So I didn't know it was your car until I got to work and checked your post to see what the license plate number was. (There are a zillion of those little blue cars!)

I called the cops immediately when I got to work and saw that the plate was the same. The unhelpful woman bitched at me for waiting so long to call, and basically hung up on me. I couldn't believe it.

I'm sorry, Kaya. But I didn't want to call and report it until I knew it was yours! Looks like I handled it the wrong way. I'm very sorry. I'm kicking myself for not chasing the guy, but he was really moving and it seemed like such a long shot!

Just s thought...Stealing a car on an island the size of Oahu is mental midgetry on the the part of the theif....I mean, where are they gonna GO with it. It's not like they can drive it to Mexico or some other state or somethin'. They're on a figgin ISLAND.
Now, Maddie already saw it, driving totally recklessly, no less, and reported it. How long until these dummies are caught...a week or 2 maybe ?

I just hope you get it back without too much destruction done to it.

Best Wishes for that. :-)

Well, most car thieves here don't plan on driving the stolen car around for kicks and giggles. Usually, they're stripped, then the parts are sold separately. Or at least that's what I hear. *whistles innocently*

Oh, and sorry to hear about your car being stolen Got2Hav. That blows

Edited to add: or I guess I should say, most experienced car thieves don't just steal cars for joyrides.

Not that it's going to make you feel any better about it, Kaya, but if you ever get another car as nice as that one (or a nicer one!:D ), you might want to invest about $900 extra for a LoJack (http://www.lojack.com/minisite/) alarm system. That'll get the cop's attention right away. I'm kinda surprised it hasn't been recovered yet, especially with the "connections" you have.

Sad thing is, some of these idjits will steal old, poorly maintained cars, too, depending on whether they want it for joy riding or parts.

I can't remember who told me the story now, but yeah... I heard one time they busted a ring that was taking the cars to one of the bays, stripping them down, and then dumping the remains off into the ocean. I guess some of them surfaced later and the police figured out what was happening :)

Sorry to hear about your car, Got2Hav... just saw one just like it here today but of course it's no where near Hawai`i and didn't have your plates.

I'm still kicking myself, but I honestly don't know what else I could have done. You can't report every Mazda 6 you see -- they're everywhere. The cops would have just laughed at me. I only memorized the plate because I thought, oh, what the heck. It had the little spoiler and everything, so I though, eh, give it a shot, you never know. But I honestly thought it was such a long shot, no way would it be her car ... damn it!

The only thing is, I thought maybe it was PFE on the license plate, but it went by pretty fast, and an E looks a lot like a B at freeway speed.

Damn it!

Someone stole my nephews car, a 199x civic and joyrided around town. It was involved in a hit and run in Wahiawa (stolen from work at nuuanu) and a stolen car was found next to where his car was.
They eventually found it in the seedy area of Mccully, trashed.
With the insurance and some money he now has a brand new Scion.

I'm kind of confused. My PM to the owner of the car was read shortly after I sent it. It included my phone number. I haven't heard anything back --no PM in response, no post to this thread, no acknowledgment of any kind.

If it were my car, I would at least acknowledge a PM with a "thanks" or "OK" or "Damn!" or "Thanks for trying" ... or something. I'm not bent out of shape, just wondering WTF.

Oh, well, no biggie. It's late and I'm pooped after a long day. I'm probably being oversensitive.

Well, MadAzza, I'm glad you kept an eye out, spotted the car, and called it in, unresponsive as folks ultimately turned out to be. Interesting that the car is still moving around three days after it was stolen -- usually stolen cars are just driven for a few hours to commit some other acts of mayhem and abandoned.

My mom's four-door sedan was stolen out of her garage in Mililani. Called the cops, filed a report, waited a day or so, hoping for news. Then I had a fussy baby and an itch to get out of the house, so decided to drive around the neighborhood to look for it. And I found it, four blocks away, at a busy intersection. Windows open, trash everywhere. Hard to believe no one else thought it didn't belong there.

I still have no idea what the thieves did with that car, but I got the sense that it wasn't used for longer than that very first evening... to go through the drive-thru at Jack in the Box.

Thanks for calling, Kaya! I apologize for misinterpreting the PM system. I thought you read my message days ago, and I was wondering why you didn't respond. Brain freeze! And here I got my panties in wad, thinking you were ticked off at me.

I wish the police had at least pretended to give a s***. I know they couldn't do anything about finding it at that point, but they could at least contact you and tell you your car is still in one piece. Or was. :o

Maybe I misunderstood, maybe that wasn't your plate ... but it was, except for that one letter I might have had wrong. Ah, well.

I look forward to meeting you someday soon, Kaya!

Several years ago, there was a woman of distinctive appearance who was robbing banks. I was exiting Likelike onto H-1 and looked to my right and there she was, in the car right next to me! I called 911 immediately and reported she was headed toward the airport.

I got the same brushoff Maddie experienced. The 911 operator acted like I was an annoyance and pretty much hung up on me.

Half an hour later, she robbed the airport Bank of Hawaii.

Last night, I jumped the car in storage in my yard and drove it a half-mile to put gas in it, charge the battery and check the tire pressure. You guessed it -- I was pulled over by a policeman! The tag was expired.

Of course. This is to be expected from the guy who once was pulled over *and ticketed* for going 10 mph in a 5 mph zone. Doubling the speed limit is reckless endangerment, don'tcha know.

Then there's the time you got two speeding tickets within 30 seconds of each other on Kalanianaole Highway, each time for going about 3 mph over the speed limit.

They're on the lookout for you, ya maniac.

Not the same car.

Here's what really happened on Kalanianaole. I was pulled over and given two separate speeding tickets because the speed limit changed for a stretch. But it was for the same driving speed. I think I was going 45 in a 35, then it changed to 25, then back to 35. Yeah, I'm a maniac.

I did get a ticket for doing 10 in a 5. It was a school zone, but it was at night and school was out. I went to court thinking I could fight it — it was only 5 mph over the limit, right? But I got the maximum. The judge ruled that I was still going double the posted limit and that was reckless. He called me a scofflaw and laughed. Yeah, real funny.

Actually, the policeman last night let me go with a warning. The condition of the car was proof it was an in-storage vehicle. Maybe the weeds growing out of the grill was a clue.

Then there was the arrest warrant out for me on the Big Island, when I hadn't been there in a decade ...

I called HPD again, to see if anything came of the call you made or anything for that matter and I got my call transferred 4 times. After all that I ended up getting a Voicemail to an investigator who is convienently off Sat & Sun.

I have to agree with everyones comment about us living on an island and where there could these epeople go wit' a stolen car, an if you saw them driving it almost a week after it was stolen they must have some ballz(pardon my language) but ill, thats kinda irratating.

Kaya, I'm wondering if that buggah from Kalihi (http://www.thehawaiichannel.com/news/10294410/detail.html)who got busted for running a chop shop might be involved in the theft of your car? Sounds like the guy (and his "friends") were ripping off higher end cars and motorcycles and stripping them for parts. Maybe your hubby's "friends" know this guy?

Backs in the '70s my VW bug was stolen in broad daylight right out of the newspaper parking lot. The cops were summoned within a few minutes, but they said there was no use looking for it, it was gone. There would be no alert.

Something like 12 years later, the police called and said they'd found my car and I needed to go get it. After my initial surprise, it turned out what they'd found was just the frame in a Noth Shore gully. Everything else was gone. The police said that if I didn't come get it, I'd be charged with littering.

Jeez Maddie what don't you know about Burl?

Well all things said about rediculous cop pull overs I was driving my 1984 VW Scirocco on Kalakaua Avenue heading towards Waikiki near the tennis courts at the posted 15-MPH when I must have pissed off the cop behind me in his Cushman. Apparently they have a hard time maintaining 15-MPH in those things. He pulls me over telling me I looked suspicious driving so slow.

Astonished I looked at him square in the eyes and told him the speed limit was 15-MPH and that only a MORON would drive past the posted speed limit with a cop in his rear view mirror. He laughed and let me go. Hmmm I guess I should have laughed as well but at the time I felt pretty upset.

That's too funny but then again it's also a sad statement that no matter how tricked out your car was, to the average person it still looked like an econobox.

Nowdays lotsa cars look so much alike. From a distance I can't tell the difference between a Mazda 6 from a Kia whatever. On that note, why do homeless people migrate to the bus stops around 6:00pm? and why is it that the most smelliest of people HAVE to sit next to me, when theres 20 other seats open?! and why is it that at night you can't see out the side windows of the bus?(I've missed my stop 2wice, finally I learned sit closer to the front*,duh?) and why is the bus $2.00!!! whoa, like last time I was on the bus, it was .75!

Friday, November 17th at 5:45pm ~ I was at the desk @ work, signing puchasing papers to own an MPV( a minivan):( <not what I wanted but it was the only car on the lot that i could get into with no money down-cuz of rebates> desperate, I'd take anything right now.

At 6:00pm the phone rings at work and I have an urgent call holding, its a police lady, she said the sweetest thing, " Do you own a Mazda6?," "yes," I said anxiously. " We found your car". "AAHHh!" I screamed, " OMG, is it in one peice?", "yes, its perfectly fine, the officers said it looks like its in good conditions, just the passenger window is smashed but, it usually ends up alot worst, like on fire", she laughed. "Thank you, thank you , thank you" I said...

Then she hits me with,"HPD is there and they want to know if you can pick it up, or else their going to tow it!!" LOL
But anyway long story short, I got my car. <you may stop reading or continue for all the details>

<sorry this ones going to be a long one>

I get the Kalakaua Highrise( this is where it was found,) it was parked in Visitor parking. Cops around and all, neighbors looking on , but no one saying anything. They discontected my battery cus the alarm went off, when the officer opened up my car, through the window. Now the alarm works...LOL!!

Anywho...thaty punk that stole my car, actually cleaned it, I had all kine opala everywhere, then I noticed he 'armor alled'(that cleaning stuff for da dash) the whole dash area, and center console and stuff, probably trying the keep his prints off. But anyway, he filled it up with gas, too. then looking some more, he left money in the car. And tied a dollar bill to my antenna. looked like the back seats where vacuumed, cuz I know it was loaded with cookies and donuts, cuz I had my neices in da car...remembah was halloween night it was stolen. It was wierd.

My nieces carseat was in the trunk, so was my shoes, my hubBy's shoesand the babys quilt!!! Thats a story too. The quilt, which has been in the family for like ever, that punk wrote all over it with permanent pen. He wrote everything that he did with my car!! Can you say, idiot!!! no more like A$$Hole!!!

Buuutt here's the trippy part.

The cops leave, my friend that drops me off leaves and now I"M leaving...I'm totally eyesing out everyone there right?...so there was a man taking groceries out of his car, I pull behind him, and ask him if he saw anyone driving this car...he didn't speak english good, so nevermind...BUUUt another dude whos been pacing back and forth since I first got there with the cops came by and I said, "ey, you know who was driving this car"? and he said" yea, his name is JOSH and he lives right there"

Wow! What an amazing story. Most times people don't get their cars back, or don't want them back! Weird about what he wrote on the quilt. Very "I wanna tempt fate and maybe get caught" sort of thinking. What a loser this Josh person is. You've got faith, girlfriend! You've got some good karma!

Considering that the car thief wrote in detail what he did, pumped gas, and even armour all'ed the interior, did he write down why he did it? Just for fun?

Kaya, I'm just wondering (indulge me; I'm an English teacher). Did you actually say "OMG," or are you abbreviating for HT? I have a few students who say "OMG," and I'm trying to gauge whether or not this is going to enter common usage.

So Kaya,

Which of yo boys goin fix Josh? Sounds like he needs a little ejumakashun, olskoostail. Plus, now you know where he at.

When I was a boy, you prayed that the cops would find you before your Pop found you, or worse yet, before Uncle found out. Now things are just the opposite.

My, my, my, how times have changed.

Good for you.....Congratulations!!

Auto theft isn't funny at all. OMG (saying it like a valley girl)... My previous Honda was broken into more times than I can count. What IS truly funny about your story is that you got a "free" auto detail (armor all, vacuum, clean da mess). That's hilarious!

Hopefully after "Josh" pays his dues (getting his @ss kicked and/or going to jail), he'll eventually become a contributing part of society by working as an auto detailer. Tell him a dollar bill tied to the antenna doesn't look cool though. ;)

Kaya, that is excellent! Ever since I saw your car on the H1, I've been wondering if I was hallucinating or what. It seemed like such a bizarre coincidence. And just last night on the way home from work, I kept seeing little blue cars and wondering whatever happened to yours.

I'm so happy you got your car back! This is really great news.

Great news Kaya, and one of the funniest stories I've heard in a while. I guess I was way wrong when I said it was prolly already stripped by now. This is one case where I'm def happy to be wrong. I can't believe the guy went thru all that trouble to get his prints off the car and everything, then leaves it right next to his house where people have prolly seen him cleaning it off. What a jackhole

That sucks about the quilt, but I can't help but laugh a little that the thief would do something as bizarre as that. I mean, that's downright strange, imo.

About the "OMG" comment - my little nieces say it all the time, spelling out the letters. I think it's kinda funny, though I wouldn't be caught dead doing that myself.

Yup, yup, yup...my hubBy being full Samoan & related to about 95% of the samoans here, that was tough trying to keep him calm...He didn't know I was picking up my car, until I left the area, then I went home to pick him up...then I told him, he called like everyone he knew to go and kick a$$.

but anyway , you know what would be trip...I told my huBy that I wanted to write on the quilt, "I know who you are" and dump it in the front porch. That sounds pretty mean..

anyway..... I'd like to smack the heck outta him, though! but yet I'm just thankful that its in one piece, except the window.:D

Lotta nerve, driving around making YOUR car like their own! My uncle got his stolen car back after a year - some drug bust turned up his car. The thief had repaired the engine, put on new tires, changed the seats (!), and spray painted it a different color.

Check with your insurance on having your engine checked out by a mechanic for damage before you close your claim with them - you don't want engine trouble to show up in a few months that has to be fixed out of your own pocket if it is related to the theft. (Unless, YOUR thief happened to be a mechanic-type like my uncle's was. :D )
