View Full Version : Black Friday - first day of Christmas shopping!
Glen Miyashiro

"Black Friday" is what retailers call the day after Thanksgiving, the official first day of the Christmas shopping season, because they hope that that day's huge sales figures will put them in the black. Get it?
Are you all revved up and ready to plunge into the crowds on Black Friday? Or will you be avoiding the malls like the plague?
And, does anybody know of any really good deals coming up? Any shopping tips to share? :D

Some stores up here are jumping the gun on Black Friday...at least one store (Big Lots! a liquidator) will be open on Thanksgiving Day from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. for Green Thursday!:D
Plenty of holiday decorations were put up beginning last week. Before long, they'll start promoting Christmas right after the 4th of July.

Normally I'm one of those idiots who'll wake up at the first rooster's crow just to get my parking spot at Ala Moana.
But because mom and stepdad will be in Vegas for Thanksgiving :( I'll be at home sleeping in this year. Black Friday's just not the same without my mommy.
I'm pretty sure she'll be raising hell at the outlets over there though. Poor stepdad. I hope he's ready!

There are lots of "Black Friday" blogs out there, and they've been leaking the national newspaper circulars for big chains like CompUSA, Circuit City, Sears, and the like for a while. Serious "Black Friday" shoppers have a list of what stores to hit when to basically do all their Christmas shopping in one day, and often saving a pretty penny. Whether that proverbial penny is worth the chaos, I don't know.
I know a coworker is planning on picking up a giant Vizio plasma TV, since they're going to sell for under $1,000 at some retailers (http://www.viziotv.com/news/detail.aspx?nid=39) on Friday. I personally haven't seen too many promised deals that have gotten me very excited.

I loathe shopping! I used to love it but I don't any more. Last Friday hubby and I did our gift shopping. There are some mainland family members to take care of, but they'll be receiving gifts I buy online.
I even have our Christmas cards ready! Had them printed at Costco yesterday!

I was at work tonight and got a chance to see this Thursday's Home Depot flyer for Black Friday.
All I could say was, "Wow that's some great prices there".

Best Buy 4.99 100 DVD's I will be there!
The rest I am buying online...I hope!
I hope WalMart's server does not crash from overload. I am waiting this year until 8 or 9 to hit the fabric store because last year I waited in line 2 hours to cutthe fabric and 1 more to check out!
I am a glutton for punishment!:D

Same here.....in fact, I think grocery shopping is a waste of time! But one does need to eat! :D
As for my business....keeping my website open throughout TG. As for my part time job...I gotta go into work on black Friday...usually service my accounts on Tuesdays & Thursdays but they're closed on TG.

Please don't remind about Friday, I gotta work 5am-4pm that day. The joys of working in retail. But the good news is I'm off tomorrow.
Unfortunately though, I have to get up early tomorrow and buy a dual DVD/VHS player for 49.99 after a 10.00 rebate for my parents :).

CompUSA Pearl City is a mad house! Even though the parking lot is 3/4 full, get choke people (I don't think I've seen that much people in a computer store). Now I remember why I stopped going to these sales unless I'm desperate (which I am - I need to get a new keyboard/mouse for my computer)

That's right... stores were open yesterday, too.
Turkey and a side of shopping (http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061124/NEWS01/611240356)
"It certainly used to be that everything was closed on Thanksgiving," said Carol Pregill, president of Retail Merchants of Hawai'i. "We now have far more people, and the consumer has changed so much. The consumer doesn't look for value, they expect value. It's just the way it is." For the past several years, Pregill said, many Hawai'i families have developed a new Thanksgiving tradition: "They go shopping. That's what it's become." Many analysts doubt the profitability of opening on Thanksgiving and the early hours of Black Friday because of the extra labor costs. Some businesses that see a boost in revenue from so-called "door buster" sale items often then see a drop when the sales end.Frankly, I need the holiday, and will save it for quality time with the family. I wonder if there are any Thanksgiving day deals that vanish come Black Friday? I hope not.
So, any reports from the front lines this morning? Was anyone actually camped out in front of a big-box retailer when the sun rose?
Though I might regret it, I might venture into some store, somewhere, this afternoon. Our VHS/DVD combo unit died (I think my kids put something in there that didn't belong in a piece of electronic equipment) and I'm certain the price of a replacement this weekend will be about as good as it gets.
For now, it's back to work. I envy folks who get the day after Thanksgiving off... whether for shopping, or for napping!

Man, now I know I gotta carpool next year. I had to park at Borders Pearlridge to get to Best Buy. I bought a keyboard/mouse set (yeah, it wasn't on sale, but who cares?) but I thought I could go back with more money and exchange it for an upgraded model, but I stood in line for 15 minutes just to be told they don't do regular product exchanges/returns until 3pm!!! (they did exchanges for laptops and "mistakes").

drove past compusa in town and saw that every parking space was taken; didn't have any desire to deal with that so i just kept driving to the discovery center to let my daughter run around. afterwards, drove to the ward warehouse where parking was easy to find and had lunch. i'm pretty sure it was a different story at the ward centre....

I worked today and there was a kid who said that he was at Best Buy from 1-5am.....bought an entire PC setup (complete with monitor and printer) for $100 and a Toshiba laptop for $250.
I didn't shop myself...well actually had to stop by Staples to pick up some printer ink and the place was empty at 7am....

I needed to make an exchange at a store at Aloha Tower Marketplace so did a quick drive by to assess the situation. As I thought...fairly empty. Sad. Also needed to pick up a couple of things from an office supply store to take home to Makaha so decided on Fishers. It was a zoo!!! I need to go to the 'Made in Hawaii' expo tonight and am not looking forward to the crowds. Shopping to me is right up there alongside of root canals and barium enemas!

BB was fairly full (both parking and the store) when I went in and returned my first purchase. And Pearlridge was still packed, as I had to wait a few minutes to find a parking, but inside wasn't too bad.
I just wished the keyboard/mouse set I got was on sale, but you can't complain if you don't go along with the crowd.

Let my fingers do the walking the other day and got a 250GB HD for about $69 from New Egg (when we looked at the New Egg pricing yesterday, that same HD only cost $59!). A full copy of XP was like $109 but it includes a coupon for a free Vista upgrade. Total, including next day shipping, was $202 and scratch.
Today we took the bus downtown instead of being stupid and driving around and around looking for a parking space. Amazingly, the crowds were not all that large by the time we got down there around 1 p.m. (looked like a regular Saturday to me; the stores were NOT crowded at all). Hung around downtown until 5 p.m. when the official tree lighting ceremony at Westlake Center and the lighting of the Macy's Christmas Star (and fireworks show) across the street happened. The tree this year (must've been at least 30 ft tall) was special: It was one of the trees that was planted by Weyerhaeuser right after Mt. St. Helens blew up in 1980.
All I bought today was a new 9x13" cake pan (one of those with the crinkly pattern inside) which wasn't on sale ($30) at City Kitchens but was what I really needed anyway.

I wanted to go (so bad), but I just couldn't move around so well today :( .
So, I just stayed home up until my appointment for physical therapy that I had made loong time ago.
My friend tried to shop, though. I think by the time she got to the store (s) around 6 am or so, most of the things she wanted was all sold out :( .
Was it really crazy out there (with long lines, & mad crazy people trying to buy stuffs)??
Maybe it was good thing that I didn't go, huh?.
