Did anyone else feel the ground shake around 9:20 am (HST)? Was kind of minor compared to the October's earthquake.

Today is my last day on the Big Island, I am coming back to HNL tomorrow afternoon.
Just want to report that here in Honokaa the earthquake was long and rolling. I would rate it at about a 4 or something... the Hawaii Volcano tracking website is either down or just overloaded with traffic now, so I don't know the exact magnitude.
However I was on the phone at the exact time talking to my friend in Hilo, 40 miles southeast of Honokaa. I told him we are having an earthquake, but he did not feel it until some 30 to 35 seconds later.
Frotunately at least for around here there is no damage at my parents' place, and no injury. The shaking is unnerving.
So you folks felt it in Honolulu/Oahu and elsewhere?
Happy Thanksgiving. God Bless.

I tuned in to KSSK just after I posted the start of this thread and caught something about the October earthquake and then around 9:38am the announcer said it was a 5.0 centered around the same areas as the October earthquake.

The news KHNL reported that it was a 5.0 off Waikoloa on the Big Island.
Interesting that neither newspaper has reported on it in it's breaking news section nearly 20 minutes later...
Yet here on HT we already have two threads going on it!

USGS mapping shows it as about a 5, located almost exactly where the last Big One was....

I think this thread or the other needs to be merged with each other:

That said, I am listening to an emergency scanner. Not much chatter beyond a few medical emergency calls.
Local radio on the Big Island sucks. Hardly any info. At least out here.

In October's earthquake the generators on Oahu tripped after the second tremor, which happened a few minutes after the first tremor.
I don't listen much to radio but it seems that the programming on KSSK is normal with music and ads. However the news director has been on twice telling about the earthquake which has not generate a tsumani.

Were you sleeping?
I'm right across the Ala Wai from you and I got woken out of bed!
First thought was... grab the wife and kid and head for the hills... then I thought... Wait for the sirens... cause it wasn't as big as the 15th.
Is it really an aftershock though? Seems odd that an aftershock would hit more than a month and a week laterl!

Were you sleeping? I'm right across the Ala Wai from you and I got woken out of bed!Nope. I was wide awake, sitting in the living room, watching Alton Brown cook a bird. Speaking of which, perhaps I still have a "tryptophan high (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tryptophan)" from the turkey we had for dinner the other night. Either that, or our building has earthquake shock absorbers.

I came back home from Christmas shopping when the 5.0 hit Kona. It was very unnerving and scary . We did lose our power for about an hour after the quake along with our cable tv.

Man I thought that was my imagination! I was outside on my front porch watching my kid play with the chickens when I felt my metal lawn chair rock.

Because of the location it's probably an aftershock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aftershock). Those things can go on for what seems like forever.
Didn't feel a thing in Kakaako tho'.

I hear the power is out in North Kona by the Airport. Aren't you glad you spent the extra $400 on a good propane oven?

As being shaking up goes, this one is kind of minor and the aftermath of it so far has been adding more traffic to HawaiiThreads and the newscast on the radio. No one is really panicing just comparing notes for today but...
This is what the fourth quake to be felt on Oahu this year alone. That in itself is kind of unusal.

Earthquake? Oh, good. I got up just then. I was walking the bathroom when I heard some glass rattling. I thought the house was trying to tell me to loose weight. :D Or maybe the termites weren't holding hands. Except for some minor rattling of glass, I didn't hear or feel anything.

Whats even more unusual is the location of these quakes.Today's one was in the general vicinity of the October 15 6.7 earthquake in Kiholo. It just means that we are bound to have more aftershocks for awhile.
Power is back on up in Kona Highlands,Kona Palisades area, Tim. It was out for about an hour.

KITV has a brief report about the earthquake on its website (http://www.thehawaiichannel.com/news/10387438/detail.html). The Advertiser also now has it as breaking news (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2006/Nov/23/br/br2795306418.html).

On Thanksgiving day. I hope the power doesnt go out, I want to grind tonight.
Does anyone remember the aftermath of Hurricane Iwa, 24 years ago today (altho' that wasn't turkey day)? We ended up with rolling blackouts on Thanksgiving day. It was quite an adventure!

November 23rd, 2006, 03:11 PM
I DO remember that! For like a whole week we had those rolling blackouts. I lived on University Avenue, in that last condo by the Ala Wai...500 University I think...and we had to do a lot of walking up and down stairs. Talk about economizing one's trips!

Hey if these aftershocks are the 4.0 to 5.0 shake the place but cause no damage type then having them come once a month is way better than a 7.0 to 9.0 cause a lot of damage shake that comes once every ten years.

For some reason this made me thing of cooking with auntie marialani (was that her name?) cook the chicken at 350 degrees for 2 hours, or 4 degrees for 4 days. Something along those lines, anyway.
I was freezin as temps were in the 60s this morning, so I shivered through the quake. didn't notice it, but everyone else in my house did.

Maybe there is some truth to predicting Earthquakes?
While disagreement abounds on this topic, scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) say that oil production can cause earthquakes, but not the kind reported in the news....
