Thank gawd this notion was just a rumor. I just can't imagine soccer moms stuffing their kids into a 4-door Mustang station wagon or minivan (http://www.cnn.com/2006/AUTOS/12/15/ford_no_mustang_sedan/index.html)! Of course, there are now BMW and Mercedes and Porsche SUVs, so anything might be possible.

Its called the Ford Interceptor concept (http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/12/31/ford-interceptor-concept/#more-4600)

Ford will use the Detroit auto show in just over a week to showcase an all-new concept car called the Interceptor. Built on a stretched version of the Mustang platform, the car offers a preview of a four-door rear-wheel drive sedan to compete with the Chrysler 300.

Atleast they're not stealing the name from the Taurus's SHO line. (and I still hate them for killing the taurus)

As someone who drives a Mustang and has had two children since I bought it, I would be interested in a Mustang wagon.

bah.. my 05 vert has the little child seat thingies in the back :p. If/when I have child/ren I'll get me a dodge charger and garage mine. Afterall, the charger's already got 4 doors.:D

This looks like Ford's ambition to update their aging Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Crown_Victoria_Police_Interceptor) (CVPI) line.

The new Dodge Charger is already gaining popularity around the nation as a Police Cruiser (http://www.allpar.com/squads/police-cars/charger.html). IIRC, it was speculated that HPD was also interested in the Charger to replace their current cruiser fleet.

If they didn't need 4 doors, I'd suggest they go with the sweetly-redesigned Dodge Challenger (http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/challenger.html)!

The current Mustang is one the best "retro" designs to make production yet. I hope Ford leaves it just the way it is. It's probably the only Ford vehicle I'd seriously consider buying, based on styling alone and reliability aside.

Detroit knows that horsepower is the cure all for self esteem.

This speaks to the very root of why alternative vehicles do not sell well at the dealerships.

Let us no forget that the original Mustang was created from the Ford Falcon, which included four-door sedans, station wagons, Ranchero trucks, two-door hard-top coupes, and convertibles.

And the Falcon still exists in sedan, station wagon, and truck versions, just not in this country. :)

Remember when the Cougar had a short run in the '80s as a four-door sedan? Mercifully, that experiment died an unnoticed death ............

I would lovvvve to see a retro 1968 or 1969 Mercury Cougar design with the peek a boo headlights and the sequential tail lights.

As for the Mustang front end looking station wagon design, I think that looks better and sharper than the "Interceptor" look.

What really pisses me off is when the Retro Mustang became the current flagship for rental companies making it more of a rental than a classic.

The other day at DMV over in Hilo I saw this white with red racing stripes 06 Mustang GT350. I think the license plate read: HLO GAL or something like that but that car was sooooo sweet!

It's been an interesting experience owning my 05 to say the least. I've actually had some people be in complete shock when they find out it's new. They think it's a classic or something.

...course It doesn't help them any with the paint job being one of the original late 60's colors.

I remember back when they first released the commercials for the new mustang during the superbowl and me thinking I WANT one... well, a year later and thanks to my aunt working for ford and me getting x-plan pricing, I got me one. Opted for the soft top rather than the extra cylinders though. No regrets.

Back on topic though. A four door mustang would just be too weird. That concept car based on the mustang platform is pretty neat though. Kinda reminds me of a chrysler 500 or a dodge magnum.

OT...what year/color stang you got? Any pics?No pics but it's a '98 GT Conv.; silver with black top, bra and black leather interior. I'd love a new retro model but no can justify when it's unsuitable as a family ride.

Yeah, but do the rent the ones with the big engines? I used to end up with a 5.0 when I traveled to the Big Island and rented from Budget. Made record times to Waimea. :D

And do they still have those great colors? I remember when I rented a new candy apple red with metallic flake (not sure what it's called but that was my name for it.) Ohhhhh baby, that thing looked great against the black lava rocks.

Then again, there was the one that the alternator caught fire. Literally. Nice little 3-4" flame coming off of it. I was right at the Hilo airport entrance and didn't feel like fooling around, so I drove it to the lot. I guess that's why they call them "Found On Road - Dead" :D

For $149/weekend day you can rent a Shelby Mustang GT-H from Hertz. (https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/reservation/gaq/index.jsp?targetPage=reservationOnHomepage.jsp)

Ford Racing Performance Group is supplying its popular Power Pack (FR1) to add a genuine 25-horsepower Ford performance kick to the 300-horse Mustang GT 4.6L V-8/Five-speed automatic transmission powertrain and an increase of 10 lb.-ft. of torque. The package includes Ford Racing’s 90mm Cold Air kit, the Muffler Kit, a new X-pipe similar to the one used on the new Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang, a performance calibration and a cat-back performance exhaust for that throaty sound that will make this car unmistakably a Shelby Mustang GT-H.

......Just don't plan on doing any burnouts cause they're permanently turned the traction control system on.

but if ya poke around the web, you can easily figure out how to disable that :D

Tis the season for muscle car concepts. Just released are images of the new Chevy Camaro convertible concept (http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/autos/0701/gallery.detroit1/index.html).

Over that and the Challenger (http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/challenger.html), my favorite retro design still leans on the new Mustang - especially the Shelby GT500 SVT (http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=105085). Notice the tweaked hood, grille and headlight treatment adorning that 500hp beast within. Sweet. To hell with gas prices. I still want one!

I used to have a Mustang Cobra with the 300hp DOHC V8. It was a mediocre car with an absolutely amazing engine. I suspect the Shelby GT500 is the same way.

I really liked that Cobra, but now that I drive a spectacularly engineered and well-balanced sports car, I don't know how much I'd enjoy a Shelby's more-or-less one-dimensional character. I'd love to have one, but I'm out of garage space and I'm not about to give up one of my current rides for one.

I didn't pay anything like that. I think I just reserved a mid-size or one level lower and that's what they gave me. They treat corporate accounts well.

I know it's a common joke that Fords are unreliable, but my own personal experience is quite the opposite. My father's old Ford F-150 is one of the most reliable vehicles our family's ever owned. The Cobra I used to have was absolutely bulletproof, despite all the times I've run it into the rev-limiter.

Ford had overheating problems with their V-8's. If the advance was set too far it would overheat. But the main overheating problem was from faulty radiator caps. The spring would corrode leaving the radiator at atmospheric pressure. A simple cap replacement cured that problem.

But I'm a true FoMoCo man. Like BMW's the cars require more fussing around but the net result is one fantastic motor.

Hmmm Ford did have that Mexican Coffin better known as the Pinto (the one that caught fire). But then again GM had the Vega with the warping aluminum engine blocks, and Chrysler had that string of bad luck with the Caravan.
