I have had the unfortunate experience of witnessing 2 horrific traffic accidents involving pedestrians in Honolulu. Everyone please be extra safe when driving, walking or riding!

First accident involved an elementary school boy riding his bicycle on the sidewalk off of Date Street. He was riding the wrong way, then veered onto the rode (in between 2 parked cars), and was hit. Luckily the car was only going about 5 mph. Ambulance picked the boy up immediately, and he appeared to be okay.

Second accident involved a very elderly man IN A CROSSWALK, nonetheless. He was hit by a lady, just as he crossed the pedestrian bridge over the H-1 off of Ward. The lady said she didn't see him. WTF? The man suffered a broken arm, head injuries, internal injuries and was unconscious. Blood everywhere. He was reported to be in critical condition. Anyone know if he's okay?

I know we're all in a rush during the holiday season, but damn, for the sake of everyone let's all be more careful. Aloha.

It's so traumatic to witness any kind of an accident so I feel for you, KK. I missed witnessing a pedestrian getting hit by a car on Farrington Hwy. near Waianae High School a week or 2 ago. Had I not left the checkout line I was in at Longs to pick up an item I forgot, I most likely would have witnessed the impact.

So, yes, like KK said...please drive extra careful everyone. Please.

Let's not put it all on the drivers. KK asked for everyone to be careful. In driving in downtown, I see a lot more stupid pedestrians then I see stupid drivers. I'm partially surprised I haven't hit one yet.

I was 'almost' a witness last night, at the intersection Punahou (not sure if the street name changes but this is the street that runs in front of Kapiolani Hospital and meets up with Beretania near the Punahou Spa) and Beretania...saw an elderly man in a motorized scooter entering the crosswalk, the traffic going makai had the red light, except for the right lane which allows you to proceed AFTER you come to a complete stop. Motorists in a silver BMW convertible did not see the man in the scooter and almost took out the front of the scooter....Elderly man was visibly shaken but the motorist just kept going..... TAKE YOUR TIME....NOTHING AND NOWHERE IS SOOOOOOOOOO IMPORTANT THAT YOU CAN'T WAIT A MERE 60 SECONDS!

Yes, everyone's right. But as a driver, please be XXXXTRA careful as you are operating a moving vehicle. Drive defensively and try to be aware of situations where a stupid pedestrian just might try something, know what I mean? You have to continually scan your field of vision to look for situations and encounters that appear to be potentially dangerous, and slow down and be alert ahead of time. These are just some of the techniques that are basic and elementary for motorcycle riders to know--but ones they don't stress enough for drivers. Trust me, if you hit someone, regardless of who's right, it will change your life forever. Aloha.;)
