Was it just me, or did anyone else have a 4.5-hour commute home tonight? Wish I had a blackberry like PZ and could have sent pics of the gorgeous fir trees covered in snow--and the graveyard of cars I passed by on my drive from Bellevue to the Plateau.

Tried to find a webcam showing the graveyard that is Exit 18 tonight, but no luck. This one (http://www.kirotv.com/traffic/2495424/detail.html), however, is very near it. There must have been 60 cars lined along both shoulders of my exit, plus every once in a while I'd see someone walking along the road, probably headed towards his car.
I think I managed to drive about 10 mph tonight. I had a 3/4-full tank (I never go below a 1/2 tank), so I didn't have that to worry about, and my DH was at home with our kids and dog, so I didn't have to worry about them, but my car started heating up during long pauses and the occasional 5-mph driving. Plus, because I took a back road, there were some somewhat-steep hills covered in snow and ice that I had to beg my car to chug up.
Despite all of this, however, the sight of huge fir trees covered in 4-inches of snow, and millions of snowflakes floating under light posts, was breathtaking. I did stick my head out of the window several times to feel the snow fall down on my face. Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest--I love them both.

The trace of snow or the stuffed animal falling from the sky! :p

I think if I find a spoon I might be able to scrape enough for a tiny man!

We just got some ice pellet looking things here, not quite "real" snow. Fun to watch still though. The weather now conflictingly says it will be sunny all week and will have more snow accumulation today
Looks like a great day to ride my bike to work out there, the roads are clear...

That's a pretty decent amount of snow! By the way, where in Oregon do you live?
Here's the low down (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003520634_webstalled11.html) on what I dealt with last night, and a photo of part of the mess the day after:

I live in Springfield, right by Eugene.
We have ICE ICE ICE now! It's scary!
Why do people abandoned their cars so much! It happens on I-5 here too.

I used to live in northeast Portland many years ago. I love Eugene, not so much the Ducks, though.

KITV opened its weather segment with video of an SUV in Portland losing control and gliding sideways through an intersection... bonking off a curb and a corner in the process, but miraculously not hitting anything seriously.

What? are you trying to kill me?? LOL
The traffic is terrible right now. they just had 2 fatalities. http://www.kval.com/news/5158242.html
The real news isn't out yet I heard it on TV so it hasn't hti the web quite yet but they closed I-5. Southbound. It's bad. I walked outside and it is like someone threw water on the ground out there.

We've had such bad weather this winter that my kids will be in school an extra week & 1/2 (or more since they now have missed 2 more days this week). [My private dream is that they keep the kids in school through the entire summer! ]

Some states do that! Oregon is voting on it.

Had a day of PNW-style Hawaiian music, combined with snow yesterday. It snowed from about 11:30 am - 5:00 pm.
We celebrated the 15th anniversary of our radio show, just as the snow began falling; then I went to a kanikapila (with some friends who just got back from playing gigs on O`ahu with Uncle Led); and finished up playing in a hula show.
Not much fun driving from place to place, but fortunately, they were all in Bellevue (across the lake from Seattle.)

Hawaiian music, combined with snow This is as unique a combination as the snow-covered Palm trees in LA.
Bard: Looking at the pics in the link you posted... Snow at Haystack Rock?
Weird weather. Pretty soon senior citizens will be flocking to the Swiss Alps to escape winter.

 indeed! I didn't even notice that was Haystack Rock in the one picture :)
(For those who don't know, Haystack Rock is the iconic, well, haystack-shaped rock sticking up out of the ocean in the upper right of that grid of pictures. It is featured prominently in the "chasing down the beach" scene in the movie Goonies.)
So yeah.. peoples in Hawai`i.. enjoy your nice warm oceans :D Even in the middle of summer here it's not much good to swim in unless you've got a wetsuit, and now here it is with snow...
(I better... watch it... with the dots... or I'm gonna... turn into Manoa...)

Snowfall yet again this morning, a couple inches in Seattle. Should turn to rain by mid-morning, finally getting above freezing (but will refreeze again tonight, making things icy tomorrow morning.)

We woke up this morning to yet another 2-3 inches of snow on the ground, and it's still going pretty strong. Pretty crazy weather for here, but it's peaceful to watch :)

Encountered extremely slick road conditions on side streets near the airport today. Could not get sufficient traction to get my car up a hill to get to a meeting. We had to hold it at a McDonalds instead. Yet another snow day for the kids. I'm hoping they'll just delete the 2nd winter break next month.
On a happy note, the traffic problem in Seattle seems to have gone away. All the bad drivers stayed at home, or their cars were totaled last week. Darwinism at work.

You guys have to check out this amazing home video (http://www.nwcn.com/topstories/stories/NW_011607ORNstorm_portlandLJ.46895f63.html) showing "bumper cars" colliding on an icy Portland street today. It's days like this when the fittest survive by staying at home--the roads are simply undrivable.

Doh, it crashes Safari to try to view it :( I believe it though. We walked to the vet yesterday to get some food for our cat (and as an excuse to get out in it without driving). The snow itself wasn't bad at all, but once you stepped into a commonly used roadway, it'd all been packed down into ice. I'm sure melting and overnight re-freezing isn't going to help either.
It amazes me to see people out slipping and sliding with their cars in this stuff though. Do they really have that little experience with snow and ice? You'd think, living this far north and all...

Where do you live in So Cal ? It's certainly cold enough to be snowing here in Burbank.
That being said, I certainly am glad to be living here after seeing thise pics of the snow. I grew up in NY and I definintely don't miss that snow.
