View Full Version : American Idol 6

I for one am glad this show is back. With all the wannabe talent shows on the tube, this one with the great Simon Cowell is a breath of fresh air. Last night's show was so entertaining. You would think that after 5 seasons, people would know how the AI format goes, yet they still put on the nut jobs for Simon to trash. I said it before and I'll say it again, this show would fail without Simon.
Americans like to see Simon ruining dreams and IMO, he's the REAL American Idol.
BTW... AI should come back to Hawaii for auditions. The year they came here, 4 of the 12 finalists came from that one audition. I guess Hawaii's voting really made a difference when Jasmine and Camille made it and they want to avoid that kind of homeSTAE support.

I had to go to Oceanic and get the DVR box so I could replay AI6 when I have time. It was so funny. Some people are so dillusional. I have seen this when I was in the music business. I think there is less than 1% of people with real talent out there. Unless people are just out there for thier 1 minute of fameless fame.

I enjoyed AI and never thought it outdone until I watched Rockstar Supernova. The integration of singing/songwriting/live band is so much more up my alley. It is the difference of belting out a radio tune vs performing at a concert for which I'd pay money.

News agencies are reporting that last night's premier got over 35 million viewers, a new record.
But they're also reporting that various AI message boards are full of complaints about the emphasis on bad singers, and many say they won't watch tonight for that reason.
Personally, I don't like the audition episodes, so I easily chose NCIS last night over AI, and likely won't watch AI tonight either. Once the real AI starts, though, I'll watch. I got lucky the last couple of seasons and predicted Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks early on (and got lucky and picked Lukas on Rockstar Supernova too), so I've gotta see if I stay lucky.
Once they narrow the list down, we should start a poll here...

I actually like to watch the rejects, and I know it's bad because during the auditions, AI feeds into these rejects' delusions of grandeur. They get insulted on national tv, we watch the trainwreck, ratings go way up. I feel bad to participate in such a scene, but I have to admit it's quite entertaining :P
I hope the brother in that Indian American brother sister tag team makes it past the hotel semi finals.

This year they must be pickey about the singers, because Seattle only had 14 singers go on to Hollywood and Minnasota (sp.)only had 17.

I watched last night's episode. I was deeply bothered by the setting up of the two boys (the meercat and the slower, large boy who sang "God Bless America"). The meercat was ready to get protective/defensive, but the big boy just tugged on every protective maternal fiber I have. Thankfully, the judges were keen to this and were more polite than I had expected (or at least it was edited that way), but still, when that boy said "people would vote for me if you put me through" in that earnest-yet-humble manner, I thought "I WOULD VOTE FOR YOU, BEBE!!!!"

The beginning rounds are always a freak show of the hopelessly self-deluded. It's always refreshing to see Simon unflinchingly hit the nail on the head and to see Paula give a warm word of support even to the most hapless of contenders. Love that girl.

The trainwrecks are certainly key to the draw of the show's early weeks, but I too have heard tsk-tsking that they were reveling a bit too much in the negative. They just let some of those disasters go on, and on, and on...
And apparently, the show hasn't made many friends in Seattle and a couple of other cities where the judges' harsh comments went beyond the poor performance in front of them and essentially declared their host cities hopeless and lacking in talent. If they end up on the blacklist of enough towns, they might actually be back in Hawaii before 2032. :)

I can't believe people are saying the judges are mean. They sound the same to me and everyone I know is just waiting to hear the comments. Everywhere I have worked in the past their has been the same thing happen as soon as a customer leaves someone in the work group has to voice thier "stink" comments. I think it is human nature to do so. I have never heard of a nicey nice group.
Maybe I am wrong maybe a lot of people think they are normal and can sing.

I don't think that the judges are mean. It seems that some people who auditioned can't take the comments that the judges are saying. If you can't take the comments that the judges are saying, Why did you auditioned in the first place?

After 5 seasons people should be pretty darng aware how it goes. Especially the ones who swear they watch the show constantly. Then for sure you know what can happen to you, for all the world to see. Not to say I don't get a bit sad for the ones they so obviously set up.

I would agree with this statement 100% if Simon wouldn't occasionally inject statements about the contestants' appearance -- something they can't help. For example; saying that the guy in Seattle looked like a "bush baby" (I later googled "bush baby", and I was like wow, Simon's right! but still).

I think you hit a good point. It's not that there's anything unexpected with the harsh words from Simon. But it seems this season, they are unusually cruel by setting up the "losers". Extended time footage on a bad singer and the continuing gag with the stupid locked, left door. It is those little nuances that I find annoying. It's one thing to critique and tell it straight to someone that you don't have the talent or the looks. It's another to just set them up to look 100 times more idiotic just to boost ratings. Pathetic.....

I read o/l that the parents of the boy who blinked a lot, and whose audition clip is viral on the internet, were interviewed on a radio station saying how pissed off they are. That son is mildly autistic. It is obvious that some of those contestants aren't balanced, but learning that has me rethinking if I will continue to watch the show.

"Challenged" contestants should be allowed to audition and, if they're singing skills are really lacking, they should not be put thru to the judges. Just by nature of being challenged there is no hope of winning the competition. Under no circumstances should they be put thru in the name of "good tv" and that damn almighty dollar. If my special needs nephew was the appropriate age and had a dream to audition for AI I'd encourage him to pursue that dream, regardless of his abilities...IF the show had a policy in place to honor such contestants for their desire and cut them with dignity. Shame on AI for doing anything less. The show's in a good position to help bring some joy and encouragement to these contestants, possibly with a sub-category that features it's own non-televised competition...along the lines of the Olympics and the Special Olympics. AI is making enough money to do that.
Now that I think about it, a televised 'Special AI' (just a show or 3, not a full season) if done correctly, could also bring better understanding to special needs people and how they have hopes and dreams just like the rest of 'us'. It would be a real tear jerker...just like the Special Olympics.

I'm always surprised that these contestants are surprised by the way they're handled.
They're deluded because before Simon, Paula, and Randy get to hear a contestant, they go through 1-2 lower level judges (these auditions are never televised). They only accept the very good and the very bad. Although the very bad who pass have a 50/50 chance of being bad or good, a lot of people will hang on to that 50% chance of being really good for dear life.

I've watched every season ever since Season 2 with Ruben and Clay. I like everything about Idol, even the bad auditions. They make me laugh.
Question: Do you think that all the bad contestants have truly gone on there because they think they're good singers, or do you think it's because they want to show off on TV? I think it could maybe be a bit of both.

I think Simon is a good gauge of this, and has called a contestant on it on at least one occasion. Last year or the year before, someone was acting very goofy (I think it was 2005, someone trying feebly to be the next William Hung) and Simon was all like "You're here just because you want to be on TV, you're wasting our time" blah blah.

The two "bad" contestants were:
1) the alleged vocal teacher;
2) the "Wizard of Oz" impressionist with those weird sounds trying to emulate the "Cowardly Lion," among others.
They seemed to be genuinely confident of their "talent."
Then, there are those who swear at Simon. It takes a majority of the judges to decide who stays and who goes.

I haven't seen any outstanding contestants this season. It seems like last season had a big talent pool. All the people I was keeping an eye on messed up on group day. The Britnam twins from last season were the best for the drama dept. They tried to make some drama with the 2 girls who are best friends, I thought it was weak.
In the auditions no one sang any Stevie Wonder songs, how strange.

I really really enjoyed the final Hollywood week competition. "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" and "Until You Come Back To Me" are some of my favorites.
IMHO, the guys are definitely stronger this year. I'm surprised that Antonella girl got in, considering she couldn't even remember her song lyrics -- I really felt bad for Marisa Rhodes. Oh well, maybe Simon loves guidettes, I don't know.
I really like the fact that the majority of them are older and more seasoned performers. I like how two of them are former background singers who are finally getting their time to shine. I haven't really seen any that just flat out sucked early on as I've seen in previous seasons.
I think a guy's going to win again this year.

Well, speedtek, personally I think there is a potential star among the guys who, I agree, stunk it up last night...for the most part.
First of all I'll admit to being a percussion slut! :D I love Blake Lewis' beatboxing (outside the hip hop genre) and scatting. And when he incorporates both into a jazz groove...he knocks this tutu's socks off and I don't even wear any! I loved last weeks "Virtual Insanity" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yA5cpGKWqmk&mode=related&search=). Last night's "All Mixed Up" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vdZJaEz-BI) was a mediocre performance but a great, albeit unknown, song choice, I think. The kid's got the look, the beat, the voice and the moves. He has a bunch of YouTube videos, 3 of which I downloaded to my iPod! I don't think the performances are adaptable to AI but they do show his talent.
Here's a concert (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2cj8XXzRC8&mode=related&search=) and a beatbox freestyle video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex4p2bnTqcM&mode=related&search=).
This music ignorant tutu thinks this kid is highly marketable in a Justin Timberlake-ish kinda way! ;)

To my untrained ears, Melinda is the best singer of all the AI seasons and she really should be the next AI. Win or lose...she'll get a contract out of it so she really can't lose. LaKisha is plain, ol' terrific but Melinda rates a bit higher in the likeability factor, I feel.
I still think Blake is the most immediately marketable (in terms of making money for a record company) regardless of who's president of his HT fan club! :D I think Melinda, tho', has the endurance factor and, like Dinah, Sarah, Ella and, yes, even Anita, will be around for a long time. I just watched both her last night's performance and LaKisha's on YouTube and...WOW!
I'm really looking forward to watching how these 3 contestants handle genres outside their comfort zones...especially Blake.

LaKisha nailed a Billie Holliday song, "God Bless the Child" and learned the lyrics for the show. It sounded to me like she was unaware of that song prior to this past week. But, WOW, it was the best performance of the night.

It seems Lakisha and Melinda are safe, followed by Sanjaya in third, according to dialidol.com . I suppose some will be a bit bummed, but I haven't considered this a "singing competition" since this unattractive obese woman with a great voice was turned down at the auditions, because Simon specifically told her that looks are very important for AI. I think that was sometime in season 5, I wish I remembered the exact city that this happened. [...]But...that Blake! He's just so unique. I, like you, questioned his ability in the 60s British pop genre but he managed to knock that song right out of the ballpark. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it!!!
...enough to download the video and an MP3 from YouTube to my iPod. And, just in time, too, 'cuz several of the higher quality vids have already been pulled for violation. Here's the short version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q57L7ZEKo1g) (just the song) and the long version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ymns_NiWGc) (w/clips and judges comments). I heard on another forum that on Ryan Seacrest's radio show he was talking to the people who were elminated and each one of them said there is a guy who is still in the competition who thinks he's the guaranteed winner this year and no one can stand him because of his ego. They said that everyone else gets along but no one likes this guy at all. I wonder who it is?

I kinda thought it was a boring night and Sanjaya added some comic relief!
I didn't even recognize the toned down Gwen Stefani. I kept looking at her trying to pinpoint who she reminded me of. There was just something about her almost complete lack of upper body movement and lack of expression when she spoke. The blond hair. Some of her features. Then it hit me. While channel surfing once I stumbled on...and watched!...The Girls Next Door. That's the "reality" show featuring Hugh Hefner's 3 live-in girlfriends. Gwen reminded me of Holly...Hefner's main squeeze and now fiance!
So...Gwen, if you read HT...I apologize for drawing a comparison 'cuz I'm a big fan of yours but the momentary similarities were just too much to ignore! :D

Hayley is drop dead gorgeous, but is too pop tarty/cutesy when it comes to singing. But there's at least two that should go before her. She is indeed playing up her sex appeal more and more each week.
I agree that Phil should worry and if this was a perfect world Sanjaya should worry.
Jordin is quick becoming a favorite for me. Of course Blake has me sighing every week.
Melinda and Lakisha are fantastic and probably both too good for this competiton.

I am bored with season 6 for the most part, and IMO, for the most part, the "talent" for this season is dismal. I think Sanjaya has been unfairly maligned, but of course I don't think he's a superstar by any means. Still, I'll admit that I've watched the show this season thinking 'what will Sanjaya do next?'
Perhaps the real talent in America has read up on the American Idol audition process and decided that they'd rather take their chances getting noticed the old fashioned way.

Jordin seems to have this Corinne Bailey Rae vibe to her, but like Sanjaya, she is simply too young and too undeveloped musically, so we're not going to see anywhere near her full potential during this competition.
It would have been nice of Jordin had sang Put Your Records On, instead of Antonella, who I believe butchered the song.

I found the AI gives back show a BIG disappointment . Why didn't they just make it a BIG AI all-star event? Where were Jasmine, Reuben, Clay, Taylor, Fantasia,Jennifer and all the other favorites and winners? Were they even asked to appear or did they refuse? It could have been a BIG success not only for the charity part, but for AI itself. That IMO, would have been a show that the viewers would have like to see and it would have really shown that AI gives back.
To the stars of past AI, if they were asked and said NO, shame on you.

I'm still trying to figure out how they did the Elvis and Celine Dion bit.
Did the audience see what we saw or were they looking at a screen?
Which would be similar to Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole's duet.
OR
Did the audience get to see something like we did when we watched
Star Wars years ago with R2D2 showing Luke Skywalker a message

OR

Ok, now this is just plain ridiculous.
You say 'shame on you,' but how do you know that they weren't already on tour? How do you know they didn't already have prior commitments? They shouldn't be obligated to drop everything for one night...especially if they're no longer under contract with 19E. A lot of them have careers now and have moved on. Some don't even want to be associated with AI anymore.
Personally, I'm glad if I never hear Goat Girl and Fantasia and Jasmine (and several others) sing again. AI couldn't have raised however many millions if it were just an AI reunion show. It was nice to see AI give back to charity, but I don't quite understand why the hell they'd have to give back to themselves by having an all star show like you say they should have.
People aren't gonna donate crap if it were a 2 hour show filled with AI nobodies.
Finally, while I did dig the concept of the AI telethon, I really did feel sorry for the Final 6 on Wednesday because 90% of the show was AI telethon and these poor six people played such an insignificant role. Keep the results show a results show. They should have done the telethon another night.

Yep! Star power is needed to help part the viewers from their cash. Unlike you, Lei, I was fine with the results show/telethon concept...esp. since no one got booted off. For me, it added suspense to an otherwise tear filled evening.
I'd love to know how much money the audience members in both theaters donated. My daughter said that being there, in person, was incredibly emotional and she couldn't wait to get home to donate. I forgot to ask her if there were donation booths set up outside each theater.

A lot of them are not nobodys ,Like it or not they owe their success to idol, without Idol we would have never heard of them. It would have fit the theme
"Idols Give Back" Some don't even want to be associated with AI anymore.
This sounds like biting the hand that fed you, but it would have been good PR for any artist who was a part of AI, even to boost their own CD sales. Oh please. Not nobodies? Have fun listening to your Justin Guarini and Kimberly Locke and Bucky Covington and Diana DeGarmo CDs, then. American Idol Extra on the Fox Reality Channel might also be of interest to you.
So have an AI-reunion show and call it "Idols Give Back." Last Wednesday was "Idol (no s) Gives Back." As LikaNui said, AI must have done something right since they did raise all that money.

Good PR my ass! I liked Tamyra when she was competing, but each time she's come back to perform one of her "fabulous original songs" I can't help but get irritated because it takes away from real AI time.
Kelly Clarkson won't admit it, but it really did seem like her first album outside 19E's clutches contained lyrics that totally slammed the fine folks who run AI. So sure...the hand feeds, but it also has carte blanche to treat AI contestants like crap.

I also thought it was a little awkward, having the results show on the same night as Idol Gives Back. I think Idol Gives Back could have stood on its own.

They were all really good tonight but there were definitely standouts. Melinda, who is out of her element in the rock genre, was terrific...imnsho! Phil was great and so likeable but just not idol material. Jordin? I loved her and, yes, not her best performance but still a contender nonetheless. I started out early on favoring Lakisha but, now, there are others I like better. Still, Lakisha is wonderful. Chris was terrific but, for my taste, not original enough.
Knowing that most of the current 6 will end up furthering their careers...my money is still on Blake! Oh wait...Melinda, too! Blake? Melinda? Hot dang. I dunno. What do I care...they'll both end up with contracts. ;)

I think this season had too many guest coaches. It was rather limiting to have them sing only Bee Gee songs... they could have expanded it to all songs from that era. I liked previous seasons, where they would do songs from the 80s, 90s, etc.

Ditto for me...to both! I'd also go see her in concert, depending on the venue! She won me over with "My Funny Valentine". Maybe Melinda can garner major recognition in the jazz world. Granted, that's not the same as being a pop star but, hey, Ella, Sarah, Dinah (to name a few) certainly did extremely well and had great longevity! "Looks" didn't appear to be an issue...in that day and age, anyway. And, jazz audiences are known for being, ummm, shall we say, errrr, a bit, hmmm, classier and not as into the shallowness of looks!

Hey, Lei Liko! We have another fan!
IMO, Blake is different from any other contestant I've seen on AI. I think he's the first beat boxer and he certainly has been willing to take some major risks. My concern for him is his longevity in the business. Is he a strong enough vocalist to change with the tides...
Does anyone know who arranges the songs for the top 10? Is it the musical director? The contestant? A team effort? Some of this season's arrangements have just blown me away...esp. Melinda's and Blake's.

Yes, Melinda's 'I'm A Woman' was a repeat, and I think Jordin's pick was a repeat as well. They usually do pick a favorite song they've already performed, so that they don't have to learn a new number. I think Blake's was new, tho, but not sure.

I've watched every week and Blake's cover of the Robin Thicke song was new. (Shameless plug for "The Evolution of Robin Thicke"...it's great). I know Ryan said that they got to pick a song of their choice, but he didn't say whether or not it had to be something they had already done.
Randy also pointed out that "Robin Thicke's gonna be happy you chose his song" during the judges' critique.

In my opinion; Sanjaya is talented, but he is young, inexperienced, lacking sufficient confidence, and at an awkward teen stage of his life. He's had a father in a suffocating religious movement, and a mother continuing to rebel against that movement, despite being away from said movement for years.
I know I'll be completely outspoken here, but I think much of Simon's hostility against Sanjaya is just the last vestige anti-Indian sediment in the entertainment industry -- which singers with Indian ancestory such as Freddie Mercury and Engelbert Humperdink went through great lengths to avoid. This is not to say that I think he should have won AI this season, like I said, this kid is young and could stand to improve, I just don't believe a lot of the hostility against him was warranted.
William Hung, on the other hand, had no musical talent, and was simply funny for fulfilling some antiquated Asian stereotype.
I think that once Sanjaya can get away from his parents at age 18 and study music, he will use his potential to outshine his rivals from this rather mediocre 6th season of American Idol.

OK, looks like Jordin's got it in the bag.
I loved Blake's first and second performances (inspite of what Simon said). The last song had Jordin written all over it... really wasn't Blake's style at all... no fair! Oh well, I think Blake knows he's in second place and doesn't really care.
Wasn't it sweet of Blake to let Jordin go first?

Jordin wins! Her last song sealed it.
She knows it too.
America knows it!
Congratulations Jordin!:D

From what I've heard, Blake did quite poorly. Perhaps he "threw" the competition, so could get a better recording deal than he would with 19E (The agency used by AI's winners).

I don't think either one of them are worthy of the AI title.
But I found it amusing to see the poll that CNN.com is running right now at this link ( http://www.cnn.com/POLLSERVER/results/32043.exclude.html) (which doesn't prove much except being a statement about CNN's audience):
Are you voting in the "American Idol" finale?
Yes 8% 7,685 votes
No 92% 93,213 votes
Total: 100,898 votes

Actually, Blake won the flip of the "coin" and when asked if he wanted to go first or 2nd he offered Jordin the choice...and she chose 2nd! Yes, very chivalrous!
[...]Jordin wins! Her last song sealed it.[...]
She absolutely nailed her last song which just happened to be the perfect type of song for her. It wasn't for Blake.

I disagree that Blake did poorly. His last song was not his best, for sure, but otherwise I thought he did quite well! I, for a change, agreed with Simon! Blake won for performance and Jordin won for vocals. AI is, after all, a singing competition but one does need to be able to perform. ;)
I tried voting last night but was never able to get thru. :(

Blake really got screwed with that last song. I'm sure he had to perform it as is, without changing it to suit him. That said, I think Blake did a decent job with the song, it wasn't horrible. It was a total Jordin song. I gotta say I was thinking the whole time how fabulous Melinda would have been singing it as well. :D Last season's Chris Daughtry would have been screwed too had he gone to the finale and had to sing a song like that.
I love Blake. I'd like to see him win still. Either way they both will get deals, no doubt. And this isn't to say I dislike Jordin, she's got a voice, that's for damn sure.

I had the same problem as well from about 8-10pm. I'd say that I probably got through about 6 times. I hope that bodes well for him. After 10 I was able to get through no problem.
My mom voted for Jordin and had no problems getting through.

Hoofreakingray for the songwriting contest winners, but I really wish they'd stop doing cheesy pop songs for the finale. I remember Tamyra Gray's song from Season 3 (Fantasia's "I Believe") and even then I thought that they need to stop it with the cheesy final song.
Either that or have two different songs so that it'll at least be an even playing field.
Still cheering for Blake all the way! I hope he sells more records than all American Idol contestants combined!

Hoofreakingray is right. *does Paula clap for them* They should all just sing "A Moment Like This" and get it over with. I don't think it's a "Who can sing the pop ballad finale song the best contest."
Been on the Idol boards last night/today? I haven't yet. Lots of bashing going on, I'm sure. I'm tempted to cheat to see the results early since Lost is on tonight. In the end me thinks I will tivo AI and watch it later, without knowing the result. Oh the choices!

Still cheering for Blake all the way! I hope he sells more records than all American Idol contestants combined! I assume you mean all the current season's contestants, because nobody (in all the AI seasons so far) will be able to get anywhere near Carrie Underwood's sales (not to mention her winning almost every award possible).
*does Paula clap for them* Bwaahahaha! Can't go to Sea Life Park and see the seals flapping their flippers together without thinking of Paula's clap.

By the way, I didn't see last night's show, but did see the news item yesterday about how she fell and broke her nose. Any sign of that last night?

Maybe what REALLY happened was that she tripped over the wagon and not her dog? That's some good make up she had on because I couldn't tell.
[cue "OH MY NOSE!" a la Marcia Brady here]
According to TMZ.com (quality journalism, I tell you ;) ) -- all AI winners except Mantasia (http://www.tmz.com/2007/05/23/idol-finale-who-will-and-wont-perform/) will perform on tonight's finale. Mantasia couldn't get away from "The Color Purple" on Broadway.

I'm a Blakette! The Blakers are younger! :D Personally I feel Blake would be the most immediate money maker for a label but I question his longevity. Still, I hope he wins.

I think there should be a variety of songs to choose from...or...both finalists have to write their own songs!

My daughter has VIP tickets for tonight and is hoping to smuggle her cell phone in. If she's able to do that without getting thrown out of the theater, she'll call me (dial me from her purse but not talk to me) so that I can hear the decision live! That call will, hopefully, come in about an hour. I'm hoping that works but not really counting on it!

That "tripped over the dog" story is akin to high school days and "the dog upchucked on my homework"!!! :D And, the make up hid everything!

They showed Paula on the red carpet. She seemed to be positively stoned. I hope it's just required pain meds.

I'm not sure why it doesn't work. I'm sure the tags are where they're supposed to be. I suppose what I have to say isn't such a spoiler. I saw Paula on the red carpet, and she seems positively stoned. I'm just hoping it's pain medication that she actually needs.

Misc. thoughts about the finale...
Chris Daughtry... love him, but he wears more eye liner than I do.
Blake and Jordin should never do a duet together, LOL
Was Bette Midler's mic off?
I thought the fake awards were really lame-- not funny nor interesting. Last season, they gave an award to a Clay wannabee, and Clay walked on stage while the guy was singing... that was priceless!
Great performances: Melinda with Bebe, WOW! Tony Bennett. Beat boxing duet with Blake. Gladys Knight, she's still got it.

I saw this on another MB's AI discussion and thought it was an interesting theory:
I am almost positive Blake purposely threw the competition Tues night because he didn't want to get stuck with the contract. At least that's my theory, but I didn't think he sounded as good as he normally did or picked the best song choices. What do y'all want to bet that Jordin is now going to record the songs that Kelly Clarkson refused to record when Clive Davis tried to scrap her album this month and get her to record different stuff?
I never thought about that, but I certainly don't blame him if he did.
Of course, we'll never know -- but at least he can take comfort in knowing that he won't be in as bad of a 19E contract hell!
