Polynesian music that rocks me comes mainly from Aotearoa.

I like a lot of the soul and raggae sound by groups like Nesian Mystiks and Che Fu, but my favorite has to be Ruia and Rania's "Waiata of Bob Marley" (two CDs). The collection has the most awesome Maori covers of Bob Marley tunes, but then Rita Marley shut them down (Aueee! One indigie bunch of buggahs appropriating from another indigie bunch of buggahs!), so you cannot buy copies anymore.

The CD that most moved me for its unusual talent is the self-entitled one from Elena (http://www.elena.co.nz). I saw her perform back in 2003; she is this teeny-tiny Maori chick with a paua-blue mohawk, and she shreds on the violin. She was a featured performer for the Wellington Sinfonia, which is a full orchestra. Imagine all of that sound accompanied by the haka. I am not a classical music fan, rather I don't own anything of the sort, but I was sooo moved by her music. I bought her CD after that concert and you can find it here (http://www.opuscds.com/cd/32541).

Himene Tatarahapa by Robi KahakalauNice choice - our halau dances that one (which meant I had to learn to sing it.)
