Happy Valentine's Day! Our own jkpescador sent me the link to this list of The 100 Greatest Love Songs (http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/story/496891p-418804c.html). Whitney Matheson at "Pop Candy" said it "appears to have been compiled by a 103-year-old man," and asked her readers (http://blogs.usatoday.com/popcandy/2007/02/talk_back_what_.html) for their own suggestions, netting dozens of more contemporary tracks. She even set up a Finetunes "V-Day List" online radio station (http://www.finetune.com/playlist/1348158) to feature some of them.
So... as thoughts turn to romance, love, and lust -- be it indulging in it, or pining for it (but not snarking at it, for this exercise) -- what are your top love songs? What would be on your mix CD for this VD?

Personal faves I did not see on there that I like
Whitney "Crack is WHACK" Houston & Jermaine Jackson "And If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful"
Paula Abdul "Rush Rush"
Sinead O'connor "Nothing Compares To You"
Da Local Artists
Danny Couch "Lady Youre My Rainbow"
Kalapana "Juliette"

I'm listening right now to Hil St. Soul's "For the Love of You" (and adding it to a music program) - it works very well for the mix, and I can see that it will soon become a favorite.
Despite the fact that it annoys the hell out of many, I've always dug the late Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You." Forget Mariah - Minnie had the multi-octave voice of my dreams.
If the Alpha Female and I ever decide to make it legal, Edwin McCain's "I Could Not Ask For More" has to be on the playlist.

Hey, if you post track titles and artists, and if they're available, I'll create a Finetune playlist/station (http://www.finetune.com/user/hawaii) just for VD@HT. But I need a minimum of 45 tracks (I've got 10 based on what's been posted so far), no more than three per individual artist, and their catalog is limited. Can we do it? :)

Oh No- the Commodores
The first time I heard this song was in the movie The Last American Virgin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084234/). That last part of the movie when the girl goes back to the guy who knocked her up and Lionel's voice starts....No matter how nice you are you don't necessarily get the girl........."Oh No":(

I Looove this song...
The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were the gift you gave
To the dark and empty skies [my love]
The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hand
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command
[My love... That was there at my command]
The first time ever I lay with you
And felt your heart beat over mine
And I thought our joy would fill the earth
And last till the end of time my love
And last to the end of time

Let's see. Off the top of my head...
"At Last," Etta James
"Crazy On You," Heart
"Like Someone in Love," Bjork
"Could I Have This Dance," Ann Murray
"If I Had $1,000,000," Barenaked Ladies
"Let's Stay Together," Al Green
"Another First Kiss," They Might Be GiantsAnd several Hawaiian songs, E Ho'i I Ka Pili, E Ho'i Mai, E Maliu Mai, Ku'ulei Ku'uipo...
Only about half of these tracks are available at Finetune, so I still need about 20 more to launch a streaming station. Hope jkpescador chimes in soon with his picks -- he inspired me in the first place!

Wow. You've been busy! A good mix in there, too. Some classics, some rock, some... different.
Well, I've nicked about a dozen tracks from jkpescador's play list, just so the "VD@HT Playlist (http://www.finetune.com/playlist/1359066)" can go live. But keep posting your picks and I'll add them to the mix, and you can have an internet radio station of sorts express HT's love for y'all. :p

"Goodbye to Love" by the Carpenters. There are no tomorrows for this heart of mine...
"I am a Rock" by Paul Simon. And a rock feels no pain. And an island never cries.
"One More Minute" by Weird Al Yankovic. 'Cause I'm stranded all alone in the gas station of love and I have to use the self-service pumps.

Ah, scrivener. Of course.
Okay, anti-love songs, breakup songs, and other VD-backlash songs are a category unto themselves. Here's a list from NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7369581), here's some you can download (http://retromusicsnob.blogspot.com/2007/02/valentines-day-mp3-downloads-for-jilted.html) (today only, and the file host sucks), and here's a whole blog about them (http://gettingoverthedork.blogspot.com/) (also with some MP3s). I've got a good playlist for this stuff, too.
But as I mentioned in the original post, I'll looking for mostly straightforward love songs. A category in which there's still quite a bit of variety and certainly a fair helping of winking and sarcasm!

Actually, scriv, I was surprised you didn't start the day with a "solace for the lovelorn" anti-Valentine's Day thread. :p This thread is way too conventional, but playing with Finetune I couldn't resist.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to race home to my patient wife and crazy kids and take them out to dinner. I don't have a valentine... I've got a whole gaggle of 'em!
Any harried parent love songs out there? :D

Yeesh. I just looked through the list. How did Steve Windwood get on the list? At No. 40 no less. "Take on Me" and "Come on Eileen" made it before "When I Fall in Love" by Nat King Cole.
Look at his picture. This guy must be single and living in the basement of his parents house.http://www.nydailynews.com/images/columnists/farber_j.jpg

A few (very few of the) way-overplayed, yet still great "old school" (mostly 70'-80's) classics...
Always and Forever - Heatwave
Reasons - Earth, Wind & Fire
Love Will Lead You Back, I'll Always Love You - Taylor Dayne
(For You) I'd Chase A Rainbow, Dorothy Louise (break-up song) - Kalapana
From that same era, a few mainstream pop/rock/metal power ballads!... (bust out your lighter)
Faithfully, Open Arms - Journey
Every Breath You Take, Wrapped Around Your Finger - The Police
Still Lovin' You - Scorpions
Headed for a Heartbreak (break-up) - Winger
Every Rose Has Its Thorn (break-up) - Poison
November Rain (break-up) - Guns 'N' Roses
Love Comes Walking In - Van Halen
Is This Love? - Whitesnake
Sade is always high on my "love songs" play list. Almost the entire LOVE DELUXE (http://www.amazon.com/Love-Deluxe-Sade/dp/B000051XXD) album was like the music of my heart in a past relationship, all composed in one entire, perfectly done album, from beginning to end.
Note: YouTube's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MV7onDP_rE) got videos of almost everything suggested in this thread.

Careless Whisper -
Precious and Few - The Association
"Careless Whisper" was done by Wham featuring George Michael, released 1984 on Columbia Records.
"Precious & Few" was recorded and originally released by Sonny Geraci and Climax. The song was a hit in Hawaii during the summer of 1971 before it broke nationally in early 1972. I wonder if The Association ever recorded this track.
While Rupert Holmes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rupert_Holmes) is well known for recording the romantic "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" and the lesser known, "Him", the guy gained notoriety as a songwriter in 1971. Back then he penned the hit single "Timothy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_%28song%29)" by The Buoys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Buoys) which has been debated over the years to be a song about cannibalism. Lesser known by Rupert is a great story song he wrote for the same group called "Give Up Your Guns".

I wuv that song!:D
It's on my iPod Shuffle
Over by the window, there's a pack of cigarettes.
Not my brand you understand,
Sometimes the girl forgets
She forgets to hide them
I know who left those smokes behind
She'll say, oh, he's just a friend,
And I'll say, oh, I'm not blind
to..
(chorus)
Him him him, what's she gonna do about him?
She's gonna have to live without him,
It's him or it's me, me me,
No one gets to get it for free
It's me or it's him.
Don't know what he looks like,
Don't know who he is.
Don't know why she thought that I
would say what's mine is his.
I dont want to own her,
But I can't let her have it both ways.
Three is one too many of us,
She leaves with me or stays
with..
(chorus)
Him him him, what's she gonna do about Him?
She's gonna have to live without him,
It's him or it's me, me me,
No one gets to get it for free
It's me or it's him.
If she wants him she can have him,
Just exactly how we once were,
Its goodbye to he and I,
and back to me and her,
Without..
(chorus)
Him, him, him, what's she gonna do about him?
She's gonna have to live without him,
It's him or it's me, me, me,
No one gets to get it for free,
Time for me to make the girl see,
It's me or it's him.
(repeat chorus)

"Him" was good, but "Answering Machine" was better. It got a small amount of airplay, and it always puzzled me that it wasn't at least as popular as "Him." It had the same story-song structure as "Escape" and "Him" and even had the funny little twist at the end, like "Escape."
Bertie Higgins tried to revisit "Key Largo" with "Casablanca" (I think). Too bad that didn't catch on. I liked his voice and "Key Largo" is one of my favorite karaoke songs.

As a not-so-closeted Rupert Holmes fan, I'm glad to see the clarifications of the earlier songlist errors, and may I recommend that folks pick up a copy of his first album, "Widescreen," which has been reissued on CD a couple of times with bonus material. The man created some brilliant "little movies in song form," and this album has several of his best, written years before he decided to shift to shorter pop hits. His skills as an arranger also shine on this disc, which is what led Barbra Streisand to hire him as arranger/producer on a couple of her albums.
Then there are his two humorous murder-mystery novels, "Where the Truth Lies" (made into a film by Atom Egoyan) and "Swing" (note to Scrivener & 1stwahine: much of it takes place on Treasure Island); his Broadway musical based on an unfinished Dickens novel (where the audience gets to decide whodunnit - and the show has six different endings to accomodate the vote), "The Mystery of Edwin Drood"; as well as a one-man show about George Burns, "Say Goodnight, Gracie"; and several other plays. Oh, and the TV series "Remember WENN," about a pre-WWII radio station, a show that ran on AMC for four seasons. Plus about a dozen albums, some music for TV shows, and so on.
He's been a busy man - and he's a charming guy, too.

well, EXCUUUUSE ME! I guess I'm not the musical expert that all the rest of you are. I just know the songs I like and somehow, even with making mistakes on the artist - I've still managed to find them and download to my IPod so I can enjoy them.
Why not give those of us who are not experts a bit of a break and not be so anal about all this - I'm sure you aren't the only one who can use google or ITunes to correct another person's mistakes without making them feel stupid by broadcasting the way you did that we make mistakes! :( and it could have been done without the sarcastic smiley you added.

Nothings Gonna Stop My Love For You
Hehe...:p
I did like the duet Mr. Medeiros did with that french chick though, that song was hot, especially when she sang in french.
"Love always finds a reason
To keep me here believin'
When I feel our love is slipping away
And it seems that love always finds a reason
To make us stay
And even through the darkest night
The feeling survives
And you know when you look at me
You'll find the reason in my eyes"

I don't remember where it came from but the lyrics to this wonderful love song went like this...
"Please don't let this feeling end
It's everything I am
Everything I want to be
I can see what's mine now
Finding out what's true
Since I found you..oooooohhhhhhhhhh
Looking through the eyes of love"

I always thought When I'm With You from Sheriff was a great love song.
And I always thought I Can't Make You Love Me from Bonnie Raitt was a great 'make-out' song.

I don't remember where it came from but the lyrics to this wonderful love song went like this...
"Please don't let this feeling end
It's everything I am
Everything I want to be
I can see what's mine now
Finding out what's true
Since I found you..oooooohhhhhhhhhh
Looking through the eyes of love"
It was a figure skating movie with Robbie Benson.
It's "Through the Eyes of Love," the theme from the movie Ice Castles, sung by Melissa Manchester. From what I remember, it was about a figure skater who suffered an accident that leaves her visually impaired.

Guess I agree with Kory that any of Air Supply's songs could fit the bill, but I think the best one is "Two Less Lonely People in the World."
And seeing that this was for Valentine's Day, I'm surprised no one mentioned Jim Brickman on piano and Martina McBride on vocals: "Valentine."
