Thieves looking for valuable metals have sunk to a new low — under your car.
Car dealer Dave Edey found out about the new trend when one of his staff started up a vehicle on his lot one day.
It was unusually loud, said Edey, owner of Century Hyundai in Bible Hill, "so we looked underneath, and the catalytic converter was unbolted and gone."
The tiny bits of rare metals inside — platinum, palladium and rhodium — help reduce harmful emissions from car exhaust. Like many metals, they're also valuable on the world market.
That means recyclers will pay up to $120 for the converter and its contents.
uh oh. If word gets out here, then we'll have a major problem other than copper thefts.
