This is yet another random car-related topic.
Tonight, I carried a total of seven people in my car (I'm charging for the chauffeur service). Luckily, they were all young teens, so it wasn't too bad (actually, just their singing was bad).

Adrian, that's not such a hot idea to cram that many kids in your car. Your car can fit FIVE people max (how many seatbelts do you have in the back)? If you ever got into an accident, how many of them would get thrown against the car seat and hurt?

During Hurricane Ewa (1982?) I had a Porsche 924 (hatchback). My kids school was being evacuated. I queued myself in the long line of panicy parental cars heading up to La Pietra. Once at the head of the line the headmaster managed to squeeze 7 girls in my car...a reminder of the college kids in the phone booth trick!!! I woulda never guessed that many would fit...albeit with not much comfort!
Now I have a big, ol', honkin' sedan that's never, during the course of my ownership, held more than 2 people. If another hurricane loomed in the not too far distance I'd guess I could squeeze in the same 7 teens!!!

In an emergency, yes, but not in a non-emergency "taxi" service mode. Do cops still pull cars over for being "overoccupied"?

During high school, my '55 Chevy carried eleven in a pinch (four in the front, seven in the back). The cars were considerably more spacious then. Yesterday's "compacts" were sometimes defined as being less than 200" in length. My full-size Acura RL today is a mere 196".

I honestly don't know but if they don't...they should. And, yes, the sardine can scenario in an emergency only situation.

There is a seatbelt law here.
http://www.hawaii.gov/dot/publicaffairs/ciot/index.htm
Even if there wasn't a law it's a really good idea to have everyone in your car fasten their seatbelts. A human body can become a tremendously destructive projectile during an accident. We've all read the accident reports that tell us of victims ejected from vehicles. That person who may be ejected out of your car might just as well be propelled into the back of your head or into your ribcage during a collision.
I am thinking that the driver can also be held liable for injuries if he allows his car to be overstuffed and tragedy occurs? :(

well, if I were thinking safety, then I'd do the chauffeur thing in trips, or if my Mom didn't go out, then I would have borrowed her van.
Honestly, we could have fit 2 more in the hatch if I removed the cover. (I'm kidding - I would never put anyone in there - where would their bags go? ;) )

How "much" people can fit?
Answer one: slightly less than 1,000 pounds worth.
Answer two: all of them, I would hope - I hate it when someone leaves an arm or leg out as I drive away.
:D

Honda says my Pilot will carry 8. Even have seatbelts for all of them. Reality check...in front, 2...second row, 2 normal and a super skinny, call it 3, and the third row...ummmm 3 midgets? 3 small children? My friend Josephine and her 2 twins? 2 ten year olds at max says I. Sooooooo, maybe 7 in a pinch. Using the baby seat in that third row is not easy, the reach in to put the baby in the seat is loooong.
So, Honda says 8. I say 4 adults, two kids, and one really skinny person in the middle of the second row.

Safely for my Honda Civic, 5 seatbelts, so 5 people (including moi).
But as someone who's done her duty as designated driver many times, if there's room, I make you fit. I'd rather have my car crammed full of people instead of letting one of my friends get behind the wheel drunk...and I don't care what anyone says.

On our last trip around the island, we managed to fit about 15 people in my Dad's single cab truck. In his double cab truck, we can probably hold that much - but more if we had the truck rack.

Hopefully none of the people riding in the back of the truck was under 12 years old, because there is a law in Hawai'i about young children not riding in the back of trucks that was passed in 1998. I lost a grade school classmate to an accident where he got thrown from the back of a pickup truck that stopped suddenly.:(
Pickup Truck Passenger Restrictions (http://babyproducts.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=babyproducts&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hawaii.gov%2Fdot%2Fpublicaffai rs%2Flegislation%2Ftslhistory.htm)
Act 167 of 1989 adds a new section to Chapter 291, HRS, reading: No person shall stand in the bed or load-carrying area of any motor vehicle commonly known as a pickup truck while the vehicle is in operation. No operator of any pickup truck shall operate the vehicle with a passenger seated in the bed or load-carrying area of the vehicles unless: 1) there is no seating available in the cab of the vehicle; 2) the side racks of the vehicle are securely attached and the tailboard or tailgate is securely closed; 3) every passenger in the bed or load-carrying area of the vehicle is seated on the floor and does not attempt to control unlashed cargo. This section does not apply to persons or corporations operating a business or businesses that serve the public. It sets a fine of $25 for each violation. Effective date: June 7, 1989.
...Act 105 of 1997 amends Section 291-14 by adding a new section: No operator of any pickup truck may operate the vehicle with any passenger 12 years of age or under in the bed or load-carrying area of the vehicle unless one of the following applies: 1) an emergency exists that threatens the life of the passenger being transported in the bed or load-carrying area of the vehicle, or 2) the vehicle is being operated in parades, caravans, or exhibitions which are officially authorized or otherwise permitted by law. The fine for violation of this section is $50 for each separate violation. Effective date: January 1, 1998.

pardon me for being a convulsive and crotchety stickler for grammar (i, who-rarely-capitalizes-when-posting), but:
how MANY!
how MANY!
how MANY!
"many" for countable stuffs. like, "how many cups of sugar" versus "how much sugar."
okay, i'm done with my conniption fit, but am now throwing myself into a tizzy as to whether the last sentence should have had the period outside of the quotation mark instead.

Um, being that the subject title reads "How much people can fit in your car?," I doubt that Adrian was trying to be grammatically correct, as it's clearly obvious that title was pidgin in tone. Correct standard English would ask, "How many people can you fit in your car?"

Correct standard English would ask, "How many people can you fit in your car?"Granted, I am far from fluent in pidgin, but wouldn't the correct title be something like:
"Eh brah - get room?";)
