Ryan has made it to the big time people. Well, at least in my industry. The tv guide he made for Justin.tv (http://www.justin.tv)(that adorable 23 year old techie guy in S.F. who is broadcasting his life 24/7) was blogged about on laughingsquid! (http://laughingsquid.com/justintv-guide/)

ps: How come nobody is talking about Justin.tv in here yet? My guess? That we live in Hawaii... where there's tons of wonderful things happening that there's just no time to sit and watch this man's life. ;)

Ah, Justin.TV. Part "Real World," part "Ed TV" and "Truman Show," part "Jennicam" and... well, a dozen other models, frankly. But still, definitely something different. Like anyone else's life, it's mind-numbingly boring except for the periodic unforgettable moment.
Yeah, I started a Justin.TV Guide (http://justintvguide.blogspot.com). With something running 24 hours, you might as well take turns waiting for the interesting stuff. That and I think there's a lot to be said about what he's doing. Regardless of the actual content of his "show" (which he concedes right off is boring, and explains that his business model would eventually involve much more interesting people), the implications of what he's doing are pretty wide-reaching and thought provoking. Fun, yet frightening.
My interest in this project is exhaustively explained in this blog post (http://www.lightfantastic.org/imr/extras/weblog/archives/004683.html). Even if you don't actually tune in, I'd say Justin.TV's worth a moment's thought.
And if you end up addicted, contribute to the blog!

I haven't jumped on board (yet), but something about this reminds me of watching Beavis and Butthead on MTV. If you're reading the Justin.TV Guide, you're reading about people watching a guy. I just...don't know.

He's going to be on "The Today Show" tomorrow, and "ABC World News Tonight" on Wednesday. "Good Morning America" and "TRL" are waiting in the wings, apparently. Not bad for an experiment only two weeks along.
He just met a woman from "The Real World" in Seattle. That was an interesting conversation. I'm not sure if he knows that she, Irene McGee, rails against reality TV and speaks out about the manipulation of the mass media. Though, of course, Justin.TV isn't MSM... probably the opposite of that. So maybe they'll get along perfectly.
Oh, and Christa, you've got to accept the invitation I e-mailed to you and set up a Blogger/Google account. E-mail me if it still doesn't work. Justin knows "his" Guide, apparently, and hasn't mocked it too badly yet! Goofy as the site is, it's certainly generated at least a couple of interesting conversations and phone calls.

Just like lonelygirl15 (when I found out about this, the truth already came out :( ), I totally missed this until recently when I started catching up on blogs I used to read up on (and hang out here). I took a peek this weekend and it's an amusing idea but I was there when the feed was lagging so it didn't hold my interest for long.
I can see how people would get addicted because you'd want to see what he'd do next. But then, the question that springs up in my mind is, "Is he acting the way he is because that's his personality, or is he pretending to be somebody he's not to keep viewers' attention?"
Of course, I don't want to take that further and end up getting "addicted". Gods know having one 'Net related addiction is bad enough... stupid MMORPGs.

The Justin.TV Guide (http://justintvguide.blogspot.com/) blog that Christa, Burt, and other fans and I created is now the official blog of Justin.TV, included on their site (replacing their own neglected blog).
And the aforementioned Christa? She's going to San Francisco next month (http://justintvguide.blogspot.com/2007/04/christas-coming.html) to meet Justin in person.
Crazy times! As I blogged this afternoon, everyone's getting into the act (http://justintvguide.blogspot.com/2007/04/inspiration-and-evolution.html).

it was amazing. he is so adorable. i was a bit chatty cause i was so nervous but after he told me that there was only, like 200 viewers i relaxed a bit.
he is the cutest thing ever we really had a nice time. we went to this crazy out of the way art show that had a live taiko drummer then to this suuuuper fun place in the castro and just danced and danced.
the dinner we had was really good too but i got super freaked out. when we were eating outside someone in an suv drove by honking. i guess it was someone who was watching and wanted to do that, but what freaked me out was that it was a grown man on his blackberry-- not some kid.
other than that i am 'officially' in 'cross pacific' love. we're working on his trip out here in a month or so. i'll let you know :)
*sigh*

I suppose watching a stranger has limited appeal. So does reading some random person's blog. I don't get why people get all dismissive about "user generated content," though, as if putting it out there is somehow forcing our pathetic dorky lives on others.
If you want to read, listen, watch, great. That's why we're sharing it. Our friends, family, and yes, some random people are, indeed, curious enough to check it out. If you don't want to tune in, don't click over. Go read The Economist online or something. :p
I get where you're coming from, though. My snarky reply to questions about Second Life is usually, "I can't keep up with my first life!"
Speaking for myself, I watched Justin because what he was doing was interesting -- in a geeky way, in a sociological way -- not neccessarily because he was interesting (because he isn't exactly an "up" personality). As for this past weekend? Well, it was fun to watch because I knew the person he was with. Riding along as Christa and Justin went from club to club, talking about Hawaii and parents and stuff, was pretty fun.
As this "You TV (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=12570)" stuff is still pretty new, there's something compelling about being out and about anywhere with anyone. I admit losing an hour just zoning out as Justin got a cup of coffee then went up to his apartment to read e-mail. Then again, often a handful of people ride along with me (http://www.hawaiiup.com/live) as I sit in rush-hour traffic on the H-1. Different folks, different strokes!

Well, yea, what i meant was more along the lines of "I can't keep up with my OWN life", like you said, but I guess if someone I admired, like say, Paul McCartney or Henry Rollins did something like that, I'd probably watch sometimes :p
The difference with a blog, such as yours is Ryan , your blog is informational...it's not like a voyeuristing thing...it's more journalism based. I learn stuff like what "toro nagashi" is. Good stuff :)
http://mirror21.video.blip.tv/Hawaii-ToroNagashi960.mp4
But hey, like you said, different strokes...I guess it's the same reason I don't like reality tv....

Thanks. And hey, I dislike "reality TV" too. It's the reason why a scripted drama like "LOST" was like a breath of fresh air in 2004. There was too much of that stuff out there. Still is.
But this "lifecasting" stuff isn't equivalent to "reality TV." Because "reality TV" is far from reality. While certainly Justin Kan is managing his life and aware of his audience, he is what he is, and that's what you see. No cuts and retakes. No slick production. No manufactured drama. Or at least, none that we're supposed to be aware of. :p
When I'm live, same thing. It ain't polished, but it's real. And let me tell you, for a hardcore anal-retentive editor type, it's tough to do something so immediate and unfiltered. Everything I do I want to do over!
The journalist in me likes this "You TV (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=12570)" stuff... not because you can watch a guy standing in line at Starbucks, but because you can watch news unfold live and unfiltered. Instead of settling for the 90-second package with standup that Tammy Mori assembles five hours after the event, you can watch the whole thing, missteps, fumbles, warts and all.
This wouldn't ever replace solid reporting, research, formal interviews, or the slippery ideal of objectivity, of course. Even watching live, there's a lot of context you'd be missing, and that's where the traditional media will always excel. Or at least should. But the accessibility of media tools -- from blogs to "lifecasting" -- is definitely an incredible expansion of information access. So I, for one, cheer Justin and his silly hat. May he inspire more dorks, just like me. :)

Cool! Thanks for the heads up. Are you his island guide? Any official (and unofficial) events on the itinerary? And... how's his data signal holding up out here? He is going to be live (http://www.justin.tv/justin), right?
