Specifically, in TV shows & mini-series, I have as-complete-as released sets of "The Prisoner," "Red Dwarf," "Monty Python's Flying Circus," "Kids in the Hall," "Northern Exposure," "The Monkees," "Jeeves & Wooster," "God, the Devil & Bob," "Hare Tokidoki Buta" (Japanese; tweaked into "Tokyo Pig" in the US), "Fawlty Towers," "Mr. Bean," "Cosmos," "From the Earth to the Moon," "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," "Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law," "Space Ghost: Coast to Coast," "The Brak Show," "Creature Comforts," "Black Adder," "Shogun," "Sports Night" and "The Ben Stiller Show," as well as what's been released thus far of "Whose Line is it Anyway?"
I wish they would release AMC's series, "Remember WENN," about a fictional radio station in the 1930s.

Geez. This is what happen when you post stuff past your bedtime. I meant to ask what series you NEED to get that AREN'T AVAILABLE and probably never will. Oh well.I wondered about that, so disregard my list and just read the last part, about "Remember WENN." There are presently no plans for it to be issued on DVD. After four seasons, AMC cancelled it, leaving several storylines unresolved. A couple years ago, I met with the series' creator/writer (look it up, or just think pina coladas...), and he told me how he would have wrapped them up, given the opportunity.
I've never heard of Red DwarfYou should check it out, Scrivener. Once you get past some of the northern English (nearly Scots) accents, I think you'd get a kick out of it.
And MASH ran for eleven seasons, all of which are on DVD (and all of which I own, except the eleventh). There is also a box set of the entire series, including the farewell episode, and a lot of bonus material. It has recently been announced (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=6895) that there will be a separate release of the finale, plus the bonus material from the box set.
Keep hope alive - for years, it was assumed that (due to music licensing issues) "WKRP In Cincinnati" would never see DVD release. But with a lot of changes (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7103), the first season is coming out April 24.

Well if this is for TV series not yet issued to DVD...
"American Dreams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Dreams)" - this aired for 3 seasons on NBC from 2002 to 2005 and focused on a family in Philadelphia during the early and mid 1960s. Lots of great period music and American Bandstand footage re-created with some of today's artists playing roles of yesterday's faves.
So far only Season 1 is on DVD (which I have)... Seasons 2 and 3 have yet to be released to DVD.

Ok, so based on Scriv's updated intent I was about to mention the 1954-1956 kid's show, Captain Midnight (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046585/). I was SUCH a fan!!! Then I did a quick google and, lo and behold, someone had a 5 episode DVD for sale so I bought it!!! I don't really care about the entire 39 episode series...just a few episodes for memory's sake is fine with me. I want my grandkids to see the fluff I used to watch! :o
The next search will be for the Mickey Mouse Club...same era as Captain Midnight. Head Mousketeer Jimmy, Annette, Cubbie, Darlene, etc.!

Stuff that will probably never come out on DVD....
"Checkers and Pogo" - individual episode days; only a VHS documentary produced around 1999 is available; and it was stated at that KGMB TV erased and reused most of the Checkers & Pogo TV tapes.
"Captain Honolulu" - kids show aired on KHVH TV Channel 4 (later to become KITV) with Sgt. Sacto.
"Byrds of Paradise" - Steven Bochco series produced in Hawaii in the early 1990s that lasted only 13 episodes.
"Marker" = another TV series shot in Hawaii that hasn't surfaced on DVD. Lasted for only 1 year on UPN.

Mel's comment about shows shot in Hawai`i reminded me of the one-season run of the remake of "Fantasy Island," starring Malcolm McDowell as a rather satanic Mr. Rourke. I'd like to have that on DVD.

"The State" - sketch comedy show that ran a few seasons on MTV; potential DVD release has been held up for years due to negotiations over the rights.

I'm stunned anyone has all those old shows! Especially Captain Midnight. I remember that series as being a local L.A. show. Did it air nationally? Dick Webb who played C.M. was a family friend so I used to receive all the goodies offered on the show and, to this day, have his autographed publicity photo hanging on my office wall. Remember..."Zooooooom"?!!!
Now that I've found a few eps of C.M. on DVD, I think I'll look for something similar for Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid and Pancho, I Love Lucy, Mickey Mouse Club, Tim McCoy Show, Ozzie & Harriet and Dragnet. I'm not concerned about collecting all the eps...just a sampling for memories sake and, as mentioned in a previous post, I want to show my grandsons the shows of my day!!!
I did splurge and buy the set of Amos and Andy DVDs, tho'. Priceless! I also found the 2 episodes of Our Gang in which my dad appeared...from 1927!

I'd love to get the Crayon Shinchan anime series with English subs on DVD, but KIKU-TV had to give up all the reels with their subtitles on them because Asahi TV in Japan bought the rights to the show. Major bummer. :(
Thankfully Toei studies was nice enough to grant sales and DVD remastering rights to JNP/Generation Kikaida for the Kikaida and Kamen Rider V3 series. I only have the first 4 so far in the Kikaida DVD series. I'm gonna' buy the "Introduction of Hakaida" episode tonight, providing Shirokiya has it in stock.
I'd love to get the "Great Chefs of the World" series, which used to air on the Discovery Channel. That's the one with the lady who narrated the show with step-by-step instructions. Fantastic production and great dishes.

How's about "Little People/The Brian Keith Show" that was shot here in Hawaii in the early '70s? If only for the sole purpose that my parents tell me I appeared in two episodes as a keiki and even had a speaking role in one of the shows. I vaguely remember seeing it when it aired, way before anyone had a home VCR.

It's a pity that Jake and the Fatman hasn't made it to DVD yet. Strangely, the same fate has also befallen William Conrad's other series (Cannon, Nero Wolfe).
Island Son (Richard Chamberlain) is a long shot as far as its chances for a DVD release. But with the unqualified success of Hawaii 5-0 and Magnum P.I. DVDs, maybe someone will take a shot with another show that has a lot of Hawaiian scenery, even if it was short-lived.
Other series that are on my DVD wishlist.
Route 66
Night Gallery (seasons 2-3)
Young Riders (seasons 2-3)
Courtship of Eddie's Father (Bill Bixby)
Ripley's Believe It Or Not (Jack Palance)

I'd like to see the Magician (Bill Bixby), Robert Urich's Vega$, Andy Griffith's Salvage One, Grizzly Adams on DVD amongst many others.
I work in DVD production we're currently trying to get a few series released, we already have contracts for Mike Douglas, additional Captain and Tenille shows/specials, etc.

What is frustrating about the Mash shows is you buy them individually you get nothing, i.e. no extra features yet you buy the box set you get all of the neat extra features so the production company screws the consumer on this.
I think this was done on some more shows like Brady Bunch too....

Sigh! Aint it da truth. But that's how it is. Shows that sell successfully in its initial DVD configurations give birth to complete/deluxe megasets, which oftentimes contain extras not previously available on the earlier releases. But then again, if fans of a certain show hold off on buying the initial DVD releases with the expectation that a deluxe megaset will be sold later on, then maybe the megaset will never come out if the initial releases don't sell well enough. It's a classic catch-22, either way.
Some companies are more consumer friendly than others. Last year, A&E released a new edition of the Avengers "Emma Peel" megaset, which added an additional disc containing a couple of newly discovered Avengers episodes from the very first season, among other things. A&E also sold this new disc seperately so that fans who purchased either the original Emma Peel megaset or the individual 1965-67 season sets could add these unique episodes to their collection without having to re-purchase everything. But alas, other companies don't care or they're too greedy.

I have most of Byrds of Paradise on tape,[...]
Ibelieve it was filmed on the Big Island.
I wonder if you have that confused with Wind on Water that featured Bo Derek. IIRC, Byrds was filmed mostly on the No. Shore (wasn't the Dillingham Estate used as the school?) and at the film studio on 18th St.

I really would like to have the complete Wonder Years. All we have of it right now is a compilation called "The Best of the Wonder Years". Release the whole series, please!
It wouldn't surprise me if a complete Wonder Years DVD set is being held up due to music copyright issues. If you'll recall, the show made rather liberal use of rock/pop hits from the 1960s and '70s. Utilizing that material again on a DVD release would involve purchasing another license. When you consider they used the music by the Beatles, Beach Boys, and Hendrix, among others, you can imagine that re-purchasing those rights will be an expensive proposition.

That's what held up "Freaks and Geeks" for so long. And "WKRP In Cincinnati." They've started releasing it with "generic" music replacing many of the original songs (some of which had been done for syndication in the early '90s), which has made for some continuity damage. More on that here (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7201), here (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7212), and here (http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2007/03/wkrp-dvd-not-ok.html).

Your probably right but what I might have seen glancing thru an episode on the fast forward mode was an episode that may have been filmed on the Big Island. I see lots of waterfalls on the closing credits, which means they shot outside exteriors possibly at Akaka Falls or Wailua Falls on BI and Kauai respectively.
But the show is for sure Byrds of Paradise with Tim Busfield, Robert Kekalua and company circa 1994.

I'm fortunate to have most of the entire series run of WKRP on the original beta tapes from which they were taped off from on CBS during its original run. It's a major "to do" list I have to transfer this material onto DVD.

That's the "magic" of Hollywood for ya! Strategically inserting a shot of Diamond Head here and Kamehameha Statue there turned what would otherwise be a virtual clone of 77 Sunset Strip into Hawaiian Eye.
Even in recent years, it is still a common enough practice. Race The Sun, the 1995 flick based on the story of the Konawaena High School solar racing team, was filmed on Oahu, not on the Big Isle. Waialua High School was "transformed" into Konawaena HS.

I'm probably the only person who remembers it, but I'd love to get a DVD set of the 1993 Fox series "Key West". Fisher Stevens as the lottery winner/wannabe Hemingway & Jennifer Tilly as the "hooker with a heart of gold". The show was like a tropical Northern Exposure. I could relate after living in South Florida for the 6 years prior to my move to Hawaii. Humor & drama mixed with eccentric characters and a unique setting. I spent many a lost weekend there in college, chasing girls, visiting with the real Capt. Tony, and chasing Jimmy Buffett's ghost all over Duval Street.

Friends is the only series we have all the complete set of. Mash, All In The family, Gilmore Girls, America's Funniest Videos, oh goodness, there are so many I could dig. I have Oprah's 20Yr. Anniversary set and that's a keeper. Blue Collar Comedy, I want to own all of the redneck jokes and comedy routines that I can, though a few are just dumb, but that's okay cuz we can fast-forward when needed.
Eddie Izzard! Yes and standup by several other comedians, though they aren't on just one tv series/set. I think I'll read this entire thread since I haven't, yet and see a good number that I've forgotten I liked a lot.

One series that I keep wishing would get a DVD release is Room 222. I always thought that show not only had entertainment value, but it was educational as well. Presented some moral dilemmas that made young people think for themselves instead of telling them what to do. But year after year, that show has gotten the shaft. Not even a "Best Of" set has come out. Unbelievable!

The Hawaiian Eye series is owned by Warner Brothers. This is one show that has never had much success in syndication, due in large part to TV stations overwhelming preference for Hawaii Five-0, which was filmed in color, was actually shot on location in the islands, and had many more episodes.
If you do a google search for "Hawaiian Eye DVD", you'll find websites offering bootleg DVD sets of this show, but the quality probably won't be great. There's been no word of an official DVD release of this show, or that of 77 Sunset Strip. If anything, I would imagine the latter show coming out first, assuming they ever come out at all.

Apparently, legal issues over a copycat suicide kept this episode out of syndication (and, one assumes) off this set as well. Series creator Leonard Freeman's widow spoke of it at a convention back in 1996. Paramount simply says the episode is "not available." Bootleg is your only present option, it seems.

I know of that story. In Yahoo's Hawaii Five-0 discussion group, Mike Quigley speculated that the same legal issues/aggrement that kept "Bored" out of syndication is the same obstacle that is holding back its release on DVD. I think that's poppycock! First of all, even if some kind of out-of-court settlement was made to take that episode out of syndication, surely its terms could not have been made to cover a DVD release. Remember, this is 1970 we are talking about! How could anyone have foreseen the idea of the show being released on home video/DVD back then?
I think the reason why "Bored" is not on DVD is because Paramount is too CHEAP! They're willing to spend the money to restore episodes that can be used on both DVD and syndication. But they won't do it for an episode that can't be used for syndication. That sucks! I mean, CBS included the episode, "The Encounter" in its Twilight Zone 5th season DVD box, even though that particular show has been out of syndication because of its controversial nature. Yet, Paramount/CBS can't be bothered to do the same for a supressed episode of Hawaii Five-0?

I suspect it would be on the advice of their lawyers. Even 35 years ago, a legal settlement (who says it was "out-of-court?") could be worded to say that the episode may not be shown, displayed, syndicated or distributed in any form. Even in a vague agreement, the legal team will be skittish and will discourage any option that could open the company up to further legal action - they'll take the safer path.

You ask, "Why would they [Paramount] choose to skip work on one single episode,...? Well, that's not the only thing Paramount took a short cut on, my friend. On the season 2 DVDs, the studio even re-used the season 1 intro. (The season 1 intros listed James MacArthur's character as being "Danny." The original season 2 intro changed this to "Dan Williams.") Now, if Paramount is too cheap to restore the original season 2 intro, which is only slightly less than a minute long, then yeah, I can easily believe they would also be too cheap to restore a complete episode.

Fascinating exercise in speculation. But I'll stick with known facts. And the fact is that Paramount re-used the season 1 intros instead of restoring the season 2 intros. That move, in and of itself, is a cost-saving measure. Hence, I'll stick with my earlier statement. Paramount left off "Bored, She Hung Herself" because they are too CHEAP.
