Speed Racer is a go for a summer 2008 release.Christina Ricci is joining Larry and Andy Wachowski's live-action adaptation of the 1960s cartoon "Speed Racer" for Warner Bros. Pictures and producer Joel Silver.

Emile Hirsch, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman already have boarded the high-octane project, which is based on the anime series created by Tatsuo Yoshida for Japanese audiences and later imported to the U.S.

"Speed" centers on a young race car driver, Speed (Hirsch), and his quest for glory in his thundering, gadget-laden vehicle Mach 5. Ricci will star as Speed's girlfriend Trixie, his formidable ally on and off the track.

The show revolved around Speed's family. In the big-screen adaptation, Goodman will play Pops, a race car owner and builder. Sarandon is on board as Pops' wife, the backbone of the family as well as the Mach 5 Go Racing Team.
I sure hope the Wachowski's can do a better job with Speed than they did with the Matrix sequels.

I am kind of wondering what sort gadets that the Mach-5 will have. Having the remote control robot is doable by today's technology (by the G button). The automatic jack (A button) would be doable but only when the car is not moving.

I want to see the double saw blades to cut trees.

Now come on we have to be environmentally correct here. No clear cutting of a species habitat.

So who will be Racer X? And will there be that monkey?

So who will be Racer X?

According to IMDb, it's going to be Matthew Fox.

I just watched a segment from Entertainment Tonight featuring Lost star Matthew Fox as Racer X.

Since ET is featuring Speed Racer Week, tomorrow will feature Christina Ricci (as Trixie).

And plenty of 'mischief'. I swear, that cartoon was about the only place I've heard that word used. :p

I dunno. The visual on the vehicles reminded me of the flop live-action Thunderbirds!

Maybe if I pray harder...

Two more previews (or trailers depending on how you call them) appeared on the Apple Movie Trailer site today, giving a total of 4. The 4th one looks like the one referenced by shaveice in post#21. I never saw #3 before now.

In any event there is something I noticed in the trailers which I will put in a spoiler.

Some segments have Speed driving a car with the number 5 on it's side and some segments have it as a number 6. Even the cockpit is different, some segments the driver is on the left side like the cartoon series, other segments it is in the center.

If anyone wants to discuss about the details in the spoiler please keep in mind that quotes and spoilers don't mix. You might want to reference this thread (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=5436) first before replying to this thread.

Oh No another remake.

Whatever happened to that magnified idea of starting off new? I guess Hollywood abandoned that a long time ago. Oh well jumps on the band wagon puts on his Speed Racer hat takes off the shackles that once belonged to all the star wars movies, matrix movies and also sadly terminator movies and looks forward with anticipation and banters with glee "Full steam ahead!" GO Speed Racer Go. This is going to be a good ride. YEEHAA:D

WHOA, I don't recall the anime series having a mom racer?

She was there in the series of course it didn't help matters that she (a) wasn't in all of the episodes (b) she was imaged almost the same as Trixie and (c) I suspect in the American version the same actress voiced both characters.

I know the mom tended to wear aprons mainly because she in the home scenes.

Was in Wal-Mart today and I noticed that they are selling various sizes of the Mach 5 car in the toy department.

"Speed Racer" is quite an amazing movie. The digital wipes that advance the scenes are almost a new grammar in filmmaking. The Wachowski Brothers have outdone themselves.
Plot and themewise, similar to "V For Vendetta."

It's a sign of how much money and resources that Hollywood is pouring into the CGI/SPFX side of the business and conversely, away from writing and creativity.

Sometimes Albert and I watch movies together even though we both have different taste in movies and the reasons why we would watch them.

As we were going to the theater #5 at Ward to see Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=15115) we encounter some movie posters and he suggest seeing those movies when they come out because certain actors are in them, my reaction was "yeah, okay".

Few minutes later as we are sitting down, waiting for the movie to start, he knows that I want to see Speed Racer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0811080/) later on today. He has seen the trailers before and he decided he didn't want to see it but I figure I should try one more shot to entice him to go by saying who was in it. I asked how's about Susan Sarandon, John Goodman or Matthew Fox. However he does not know I was listing the support cast of Speed Racer so when I asked about John Goodman Albert's response was:

Depends on what vehicle he is in

When I said that all three of them are in the Speed Racer movie he remembered his John Goodman response and added:

He doesn't strike me as a race car driver type

Which I then said "No, he designs and builds the race car."

We had a good laugh and I asked him later if it was okay to put his John Goodman response to HawaiiThreads to which he said okay.

As far as the movie itself I saw it later on in the afternoon with just a few minutes to spare. Even though it's showing on at least 3, maybe 4 screens at Ward I ended up in one of the smaller ones but it still had room to spare when the movie started.

The feel of the movie is watching real life people in a cartoon backgrounded world. I gave up trying to figure out what time period this movie takes place in.

All of the characters from the cartoon series are here, Speed, Pops, Mom, Spritle, Chim Chim, Trixie, Sparky, Racer X and Inspector Detector with some changes from the series. For instance the Mach 5 was built during the time Rex Racer was still around and Speed was about 10 years old. There is an incident in the movie that causes Rex to leave the family, but he leaves the Mach 5 with Speed and then Rex dies in a cross county race a few years later.

The movie itself is a mixed with racing action, fights, comic relief with Spritle and Chim Chim (which it could do without but I suppose people would complain too if that wasn't in there), villians, evil plans.

If you were a fan of the cartoon series I think you won't be disappointed with this movie and the Mach 5 does run in one of the three races in the movie using some of the gadgets.

watched it, enjoyed it but i wasn't very impressed. i think my expectations were a bit too high. with the W brothers involved, i was hoping the special effects would knock me up right in the face but it was just an entertaining movie. iron man, for me, was way more entertaining and satisfying.

The cartoon never thrilled me as a kid, so I'm not in a rush to see itl. The fact that it came in third behind "IronMan" and "What Happens in Vegas" makes me believe this one failed expectations bigtime.

I'm sure when "Indiana Jones 4" comes out in a few weeks it will shatter some records.

This question is a crossover for the Checkers and Pogo topic.
Wasn't there another Japanese animation series on Checkers and Pogo about a girl who was secretly a princess but dressed as a boy because she had swordfighting skills?

Saw it this afternoon at Pearlridge with a friend. One thing I can describe about this movie is that it's filming style is sort of like Sky Captain (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=2699) and the World of Tomorrow, only it's in color.
