I was waiting for the bus this afternoon at the bus stop in front of Waipahu High School and observed Waipahu High School students jaywalking across Farrington Highway. They were too lazy to walk to the crosswalk, which is complete with traffic signals. Lucky they didn't get run over. Those youngsters put convenience first and safety second. Sure it takes time to walk to the crosswalk, press the button, and wait for the walk signal, but it's well worth it for safety reasons.

Sure people have recently been run over in crosswalks, but the dangerous crosswalks are the ones without traffic signals. Dole Street in the UH Manoa area has a crosswalk with no traffic signals. I don't dare use that crosswalk because I know that Dole Street also has crosswalks with traffic signals and I don't want to risk getting run over.

Yep...pedestrians need to cooperate, too. Yesterday a light was green for me but a jogger didn't want to stop so jogged thru his red light, while in the crosswalk, as I was approaching it. I didn't have to stop for him but I did have to slow way down. Stupid jogger.

Waianae High School students continue to jaywalk across Farrington Hwy. I don't think additional crosswalks and stop lights would make any difference.

And don't even get me started about another idiot who kept tapping his horn at me when I stopped at a green light and refused to pull forward and block the intersection...which is AGAINST THE LAW! If I'd done that, with my luck, ericncyn probably woulda been the first car I blocked! :D

Actually doesn't the law stipulate that regardless of who has signal, anytime a pedistrian is on the roadway (crosswalk or not) you as a driver must yield to them?

They may be wrong but by not yielding, you will also be cited. I actually saw this happen in front of the Kress Building in Downtown Hilo last month. Some tourists were making their way across the street to catch the Hele-on bus so they jaywalked...actually jayran the street. A big SUV almost bowled them over but a nearby police officer flagged the SUV to pull over to cite him. When the tourists came over to obviously complain, the officer cited them as well. I was across the street picking up my kid at Connections PCS (public charter school) when I witnessed the whole thing.

But yes, vehicles must yield to pedestrians in the roadway - because the alternative is so much NOT in the pedestrian's favor.

Basically, just because a pedestrian is against the signal is not an excuse to run them over.

Except in Boston, where you get extra credit for winging a pedestrian!:D

Having been a fairly adept city walker for many years, my jaywalking kung fu has gotten quite good. I'm surprised I haven't been zapped with a ticket yet.

to the d*ckhead who slapped the trunk of my car with his hand, after stepping into the parking lot after I was passing by and hollering "pedestrians have the right of way!" Yeah you do, but not as a car is passing by and would have had to slam on the breaks to accomodate your desire to not break your stride as you walk out of the store. That attitude may get you killed one day.

...and lucky thing my husband wasn't in the car at that moment, or we would have been in the news.

It`s a no win situation, I witness this all over my home Island as well. I just no can think cause I see what the outcome could be. It`s scary because we drivers have to be on top of it. Being extra aware of people running across the street all the time, especially when NCL comes in. All these people running across heavy traffic is an tragedy waiting to happen. Then I see drivers on their cell phones, not even focused on the road! Next we got the SuperFerry coming, Oh Boy......... Our harbor is a joke and cannot handle the volume of tourist and crewmen coming off NCL. It`s just unreal how this problem could become even worse.

Where going be the scariest is right where Hobron Ave. meets Hana Hwy. They closed off Ala Luina (the small road behind the Old Kahului Store) because of HSF, so now the NCL guys gotta walk up to Hobron and try to cross over there instead of going down Wharf St.

I think I saw that HSF also plans to have a shuttle for their foot passengers (probably drop them off at Maui Mall) because that whole area all messed up.

Jaywalkers are just showing their preference for natural selection.

Yes that area is bombarded with heavy trucks and rent-a-car vans and FIT wanting to explore the Island. What`s alarming is how it is now and how worse it will get later. NCL crew members as well as the stragglers who want to get away to go shopping don`t realize how bad this area is when jaywalking. Especially around the Maui Mall area. OGGBOY

In Las Vegas, cause that's where I'm living now...

If you jaywalk you not only get cited for $190, but if you are run over, the law says the driver is not at fault. Drivers love this law. They will speed up to scare you off the street (while snickering or laughing).. they will honk their horns at you. They don't brake.. they'll speed up and try to swerve out of the way at the very last second (too many people have been run over and killed by jerks like that) but they will not be cited for any wrong doing.

Sad...

I wouldn't mind this law too much if it was an accident, but most of the time, it's avoidable.

..home sounds like a better place to be, right now. :D

Yea and you know who especially loves that rule? Those DARN taxi drivers, holy smokes I was almost a hood ornament one day, and I was crossing one small little road, not like da beeg one on da strip, was just one manini side road! oish..!

That's why Las Vegas is also known as Sin City. Those jerk drivers who refuse to brake for pedestrians have no respect for the 10 Commandments, especially the commandments "Thou shalt not kill" and "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." Sure those jerk drivers won't be legally at fault for running over pedestrians, but do you think the jerk drivers will go to heaven when they die? I don't think so. I think a $190 fine is more than enough for jaywalkers. Killing jaywalkers with an automobile is never appropriate.

if i had been in your place, i would have given the guy honking me the "you're the number one idiot" handsign. oh, wait....i HAVE been in your place, and i HAVE given the one-fingered aloha...

one of the most brazen jaywalkers whose life i almost regret braking for was this teenaged kid who meandered across the street fronting the kalihi office depot/foodland a few weeks ago. i was only fifteen feet away at most when he started crossing with his younger siblings following dutifully behind. luckily, the littler ones had the sense to stay on the sidewalk. the teenager had the audacity to try to stare me down! even now, part of me wishes i had stepped on the gas when i saw him start jaywalking, just so i could accelerate enough so that i could have braked in a more sudden (and educational!) fashion a couple of feet away from his punkas..terisk. but i saw the wee tots with him and my heart softened so much that i didn't even honk! (bet some of you think that's amazing) i just hope that my being lenient didn't teach the younger ones that what their elder did was perfectly okay.

The Tsunami Museum is across the street. I think the Kress Building is now owned by Connections PCS.

Once I was crossing the street at the corner of Wilder and Punahou in a marked crosswalk with the light. Suddenly a car making a right from the Kokohead bound right lane of Wilder onto the Makai bound right lane of Punahou almost hits me as I'm walking Makai in the crosswalk trying to get to the corner.

Instinctively I throw my hands out as if trying to stop this car screeching to a halt. My hands hit the hood of the car but in my right hand were my car keys.

Ohh the pretty scratches across the hood I thought to myself as he sped by when I backed away. Yeah I let him know he was number one.

Jaywalkers run rampant here also where I am at.
I myself abide by the traffic signals. When the orange hand appears I obviously wait at the corner and I move when I see the orange man walking symbol appear along with the numbers counting down to get my okole to the other side. Other ppl going against traffic lights or take their sweet time thinking they are pedestrians thinking they are immune from cars. If I don't see cars goin in both ways and its a not so busy versus a much busier street I think I can wait for 30 seconds or so.

But what I hate sooooooooo sooooooooooo much is when ppl in cars turning right and the driver looking left and you as a pedestrian is about to cross their paths I make sure that their eyes are on ME before stepping foot in front of them.

The only thing I did, which I assume the honking driver behind me could see, was to shake my head from side to side (as in a negative nod) to the beat of the honking. He'd stop. I'd stop. He'd start. I'd start.

One way I get even with jaywalkers without breaking the law ... shift out of gear and rev my engine while I come to a stop. Oh, how I love to see them run, especially when they're jaystrollers.

My real beef though is with HPD. Why make a show of ticketing jaywalkers/crosswalk violators in Downtown when the majority of law-abiding pedestrians are being mowed down in Kalihi? How about some service and protection rather than revenue collection?

hey! that was HIS air horn, not mine--i just made use of it against the mascara-applying and unrepentantly intersection-blocking woman since it happened to be available.

my actual job is to keep my cell phone at hand so i can call in any tailgaters, traffic weavers, excessive speeders, etc. to 911 whilst we are on the road (see the thread on brake checking). i've even called the cops on a drunk driver who just flat out fell asleep, hunched over his steering wheel one evening at the mccully-kapiolani intersection. we didn't dare honk at that one bcs we preferred the cops catching him that way versus waking him up just so that he'd continue to drive as erratically as he had been.

besides, we have a rule when it comes to pedestrians--no honking at the elderly, the juvenile, or parents with little munchkins. yes, even obnoxious honkers like us can have some sense of restraint.

The term for women applying make up is called Farding (http://www.wtopnews.com/index.php?sid=673206&nid=456) . So women who put make up on while driving are multi-tasking. They Fard while driving.
