The American Institute of Architecture is offering FREE (normally cost $15) walking tours (http://www.aiahonolulu.org/cde.cfm?event=166641)of 20 historic buildings in downtown Honolulu next Saturday, April 28. If you are interesting in learning the history of some of these buildings, this would be an excellent opportunity to be guided by some professionals who know about buildings. RSVP required.

Mmmm...and a whole bunch more that went down to make way for the parking lots and highrise buildings. :(
It was a while ago, but the last building I saw go down was supposedly a summer home used by Hawaiian royalty, maybe Kamehameha (?), right across the water front. The BM slowed down construction because they found artifacts buried under the foundation and spent several weeks excavating the site. Used to ride my bike through downtown on Sunday mornings and used to stop by the site to watch. They found old bottles, intact, clay tobacco pipes, buttons, coins and a bunch of other small kine stuffs. Interesting.
Thanks for the info, guys. Always looking out for stuffs we can do on weekends with our Mel. :)

Thanks for this link, Burl. Whatta cool story. I loved learning more of the history behind 2 of the buildings that are across the street from my office...esp. the ghosts that haunt the old fire station. I think that explains some "noises" I hear on occasion!
All those old buildings are so wonderful. Too bad downtown isn't still full of 'em.

Got to see one of Burl's stories on an old building where my new job will be. Pretty cool!
