View Full Version : Hawaiians: Nowhere to go?

You know those PSA ads in tv where the Part-Hawaiian person says something like 'all the other races have a place to call they own, but we Hawaiians have no place to go', what does that mean? I mean the actress in the ad is NOT pure Hawaiian( a rare thing nowdays), so they do have ties to 'a place to go' and didn't the original settlers to Hawaii actually come from the South Pacific?
Not wanting to cause trouble with this thread(be nice Keanu, use you mind ,before your mouth-aloha!), but just friendly discussion . How do you on HT interpret 'no place to go'?
From Wikipedia:Native Hawaiians (in Hawaiian, kānaka ʻōiwi or kānaka maoli) are the Polynesian peoples of the Hawaiian Islands who trace their ancestry back to Marquesan and possibly Tahitian settlers (starting circa AD 400), before the arrival of British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778.

ab, those ads are created to cause a stir, not reflect who we are as a people. I know a helluva lot of Hawaiians and I don't know any who are accurately reflected in that psa. It isn't fair to ask us what they mean; you need to ask the folks who created it.
If it was accurate, the majority of us would weep for having nowhere to go. The opposite is true; we are from here, born of here, genealogically tied to here, and descend from Papahanaumoku and Wakea, along with the others™ (Tahitians, Marquesans, Samoans, other Polys, and then the boatdwellers, the whalers, the plane-flyers and so forth).
No place to go, my ass *sniff*.

I can tell from observation that the Hawaiians down in my neck of the woods ain't leaving anytime soon. They own their homes, work hard for a living, and love their families.
You ask em where they go? They say No need go, Stay staying.
Personally, I think an advertisement of the type you describe is aimed at lowering the self-esteem of an entire culture by reinforcing the whole "victim" mentality. When people STOP viewing themselves as victims, it becomes much harder for the powers that be to subjugate them. I think the "poor me" game is wearing thin on modern, hard working Hawaiians. I would not want to be associated with anybody who constantly talks down to me, or about me, or who would presume that my lot in life is due to some external circumstance that I cannot control.
No where to go?? Why you want to leave?

Why would one of the groups(i'm guessing one of the native Hawaiian groups made the ad.) create tension among their own people? Oh, I dunno - how about...because not everyone who is a member of a particular racially-defined class of people thinks the same as and shares the same opinions as every other member of said class?
Is it not obvious that different Kanaka have differing opinions as to how Hawai`i should be viewed, treated, respected, recognized, directed, governed? It's certainly obvious to me - and I don't live in the Islands.
Sorry, alohabear - not attacking you here, but it just seems a bit of a foolish question. Why should anyone assume that all Kanaka have the same goals, as well as agreement on how to achieve those goals?

Why should anyone assume that all Kanaka have the same goals, as well as agreement on how to achieve those goals? Then why make the PSA's with a bundle of sticks representing the a strong people together as one? It's basically we have the same goals and can achieve them as one people. According to you, whoever made that ad has a BIG dream.
Thanks for the feedback...Aloha!

According to you, whoever made that ad has a BIG dream. If they are gonna spend the money to produce the TV spot - yeah, prolly so, ab. Some groups, representing their perspective, have trouble accepting that not everyone will agree with 'em.
...and for a moment, I wondered if Keanu meant you, me, or TK...maybe all?:p

AB, let's get intellectually honest for a minute here: I read a great deal of your posts, and most of the time I see you fapping over this very topic. What is it that you want to hear?

Well since I have not since this ad I will only comment that it sounds a bit off. Where's the we ARE Hawai`i pride?

Just something I think about often...
Even if she's part-Hawaiian, why can't she consider herself Hawaiian? If she's culturally Hawaiian and has the genealogy that connects her through her ancestors to the 'aina all of the sudden her other blood takes that away?
I'll be damned if I'm not part my mother, my tutu, and on up the family line just because my father is Portuguese. I don't get that logic.
And what do people consider hardly Hawaiian/toenail Hawaiian? If a 1/64th Hawaiian keiki knows their genealogy and practice their culture why can't they consider themselves Hawaiian? Sorry bout this rant but blood quantum issues drive me insane the more I learn.

we see things that piss us off and react, and you bash us for being dem uppitysovereignables and chide us for our lack of aloha spirit. We react by refraining to spill any worthy mana over it and comes hither your umbrage.
Dude, I've seen both points of view out of you. I know that you wrestle with some moral quandary about this, and believe me, I try my best to find empathy whenever I read it. Not all umbrage deserves reaction, because face it, life is short. I ain't gonna get down on my knees and argue with each ant in the anthill. That's what ke Akua gave me long legs for; to have the foresightedness and step over it all.
I suggest you do the same. But if you choose not to, and that is your right as well, I am going to start calling you on it. Deal?

I never call you names, or put you down personally. All I do is ask a simple question and you get so offended like I have no right to know. If you are offended, I'm sorry. This forum is an OPINION board and everyone is entitled to it, provided you adhere to the rules. You Keanu, come very close to breaking them whenever the issue of Native Hawaiians come up . Sure we all don't agree all the time, in the spirit of ALOHA we try to keep things civil. Remember what I wrote at the beginning of this thread:Not wanting to cause trouble with this thread(be nice Keanu, use you mind ,before your mouth-aloha!), but just friendly discussion . How do you on HT interpret 'no place to go'? You Keanu put me in mind of someone who is young and has a lot of living to do to see the true spirit of ALOHA. I Know someday you will find peace for all the anger you carry and I dream of that day for you.

Like I said before in other threads, My ohana crosses all racial boundies. My son is part Hawaiian, so I know the issue. His tutu ( who was 100% Kanaka Maoli) was the proudest woman I have come across. She always told me that the younger generation just didn't understand how lucky Hawaii is to be a State. No need fight to be heard,if you get something special to say, people will listen.

AB, let's look at your positions just on this thread alone. What reaction are you trying for? You've been setting this up for both reactions. Ok Pikachu, I choose you, babe.

What. You. Like?I'm not Hawaiian and I'm offended of how it makes my son's race look. The reaction I want is I want to know how the Hawaiian community(on a whole) feels about ads targeted at them. This way I can let my son know different opinions on the subject. My cousin(who BTW...is Part-Hawaiian) is a teacher with the DOE and a UH Hawaiian studies major, explained to me why he didn't jump on the Kau Inoa bandwagon. He educates us on one side of the issue, but to get the whole picture, I was looking for input from HT.

Go with me on this, will you please, AB?
What offends you about Hawaiians and how we look? I promise to keep an open mind, because being candid can be risky; I know that, so I acknowledge that right now and wish to dialogue past offense, ok? Being honest here, I'm already seeing this offense in you, so instead of it seeping out here and there, let's get it out in the open and try to understand it. Please?

The Hawaiian people don't offend me, the(TV) ads do. I don't have nothing against Hawaiians, like I told you my son is Hawaiian.
What makes me offended by the 'No where to go" PSA is that the(Kanaka) people never go anywhere and that they're not being told to go anywhere. The fact that most of Kanaka Maoli are of mix race, makes the ad null & void because they have another culture( of origin) too. Am i making sense? If not I'm sorry I wasted your time Pua'i
