Traveling around in sales, I do a lot of windshield time. To reach my nearest client is approximately 20 miles. By freeway (405 Northbound), without traffic, this could take 15-20 minutes. However, traffic is of course, a nightmare going northbound on the 405. What could take 20 minutes with flowing traffic, results in a 20 mile commute to a 1 1/2 hour stand-still on the 405 parking lot. :( As a result, I have found myself traveling on the major boulevards to the westside which reduces the commute time by 30-40 minutes. :)

Mine is a 30 second walk to the sewing room, BUT hubby's is 11 1/2 minutes. And he timed it because we raced 2 different ways one time.

The less time spent on the freeway (parking lot) the better.
I'm fortunate to either not have to at all, or at least am able to take the Kapiolani cutoff (the third cutoff coming in off Kalanianaole from the east) before it REALLY BACKS UP during rush hour.
With that, from Waikiki to work, 15 minutes. From Hawaii Kai, 30 minutes.
Radio usually tuned to The Jewel 99.5fm, which keeps me relaxed and in thinking-about-my-work mode. ;) Nothing's worst than talk radio trash gossip and/or pounding club music while driving at 6am.

I drive from Mililani to Iwilei every day. I try to leave before 6 a.m. for limited congestion on H-1 (about a 40 minute trip). But since I leave work after 4 p.m., I'm usually part of that afternoon parking lot leading into Pearl City (about an hour).
I used to live on Keeaumoku and work downtown. I loved that commute.
But one thing about a long drive, especially in the afternoon? I have a good meditative period to get out of "work mode," listen to podcasts, and talk to myself. There's a lot less stress when I finally walk in the door.

I walk to work. Takes about 25 minutes. It's part of my exercise routine--it's relaxing, pleasant, and saves me a lot on gas.

Ok...well, I have to 'fess up! My 37 soon to be 40 mile commute, while accurate and truthful, doesn't take place every day and never during peak traffic hours! Depending on where I am in a project, I can work from home. When I'm slammed, I stay in my office.
Best of both worlds! ;)

When I lived in a small apartment kitty corner from the Waiola Shave Ice in McCully, I'd ride my bike. That's the beauty of living and working in town. I could wake up at 6:45 and be in at work by 7am.

I did that at work. Why shower when you're gonna sweat...we have locker facilities at the Gas Company.
I shave in the shower so that answers #2 then brush while washing off the soap.
We have toilets at the Gas Company...there ya go.
Get up, change to shorts, tank top and shoes, out the door.
Get to Kapiolani Bakery and pick up a danish...okay three.
Get to work, do the three S' go upstairs for a cup of java and enjoy my pasteries over the morning paper and start work...when I'm ready...usually around 7:15ish:o

Ho! You are soooooo speedy!
True story. Just last month I overslept...woke up at 9am with a 9:30 doc appt. on the calendar. Doc's office is less than a mile away. What's unusual is I've never in my life slept 'til 9! Plus I have a major sleep disorder so...I don't even own an alarm clock! I'm lucky to get any sleep at all much less have to set an obnoxiously loud deadline to end it! But, there I was...9a, wondering how the hell that happened! I was so discombobulated that all I could manage to do was brush my teeth, throw on the previous day's clothes and hope not to drive that one mile in too much of an erratic fashion. The look on my docs face was priceless! I fell asleep again on the exam table and I was full of needles (accupuncture)!!! I didn't fully wake up until late afternoon. Thank goodness I didn't have a casting session that day! That woulda been a disaster!
Still don't know how or why that happened but I'd sure like a few more of those oversleeps! :D

Guys don't have to paint their faces or straighten out their golden locks every morning. It's pants, shirt, shoes poptarts and we're off.
One of my boys primps like a girl taking forever in the bathroom and still coming out like he just woke up. All that hair products and it still looks like a mess. He keeps our only iron in his room yet his clothes still look like they sat in the dryer for weeks. You can't see his designer shoes because the pant legs are too long. I tell him, ever heard of hemming up those legs?
He looks like a slob waking up, and going to school but he reminds me that's the style now and he pays big bucks to buy clothes with built in wrinkles and hair gel to maintain that just woke up look. I look at his group of friends and they all look like the walking dead oblivious to each other's grunting cuz they're cut off from humanity with their iPod earphones.
Oh this is about the drive to work. Sorry back OT. Now I take 22-miles and half an hour to get to work and it's getting longer as Keaau fills up with former Honolulu expatriates.

my house to my work takes 15 minutes (about 7 miles), but I have my "soccer mom" duties, so a typical day includes an afternoon putting on 40+ miles on the vehicle, for I have three children with many extracurricular activities.

Either you shower the night before or
You like facial hair or
You're constipated in the morning
Three S's: Sh*t, Shower Shave
And in Basic Training you have five minutes to accomplish all three:D

Similar for me. I used to bus to work (about 20-25 minutes), but in the past couple months, I've started walking both to work and back home; about 35 minutes one way. Good exercise, and I get to listen to a lot of material that I load onto an mp3 player.
Driving would be an expensive option, when you factor in parking costs.

it's about 20 miles, which comes to 45 minutes one way eventho I'm going against traffic for the most part. I used to bike to work when I lived on the mainland. I miss being able to do that, but ahh, such is life.

Yep, I shower the night before. And sometimes, if it's a working day where it would be in the back operations and not seeing any customers, I might skip the shaving. But never skip the last S. :D

I'm thinking of living in Miliani Town for a job in Pearl City. What's the commute like on Kamehameha? I hear that H1 is a parking lot. Would I have the same issues with Kamehameha? How about TheBus? Are they immune to rush hour traffic? Or is it because they avoid the highways? What are biking lanes like? Safe, or do you constantly have to fight with cars (you do here where I live). And is rollerblading to work even an option?

my commute is about 19.54 miles. Mililani to Honolulu. i bike twice a week. Kipapa Gulch is sketchy but freewheelers can zoom down. After the gulch biking along Kamehameha Highway isn't really all that bad. On the way back the Pearl Harbor Historical Trail (sometimes called a bikepath but it's a shared use path) is a pleasant ride.

From Wahiawa to the Waimalu off ramp, 15 minutes tops with no traffic via H2 and H1. How heavy the traffic is depends on when you need to be on the road. If there's an accident on H1, Kam is a parking lot for all the commuters trying to get around it, and this happens quite often. Expect delays and listen to KSSK or other morning radio show that has frequent traffic reports.
You can bike it on Kam, but watch one spot where it dips down into a valley between Mililani and Waipio. Road is narrow through that area. Nice bike path on Kam through Mililani and from Waipio down to the Waipahu/Pearl City "junction". After the "junction" expect rough riding past Leeward Community College and part of Pearl City. Road is really bad through there.
The buses are not immune. No HOV lanes on Kam and H1 HOV lanes slow down due to Looky Loos if there's even a minor accident. The latter is moot since there is no express buses that run on the H2/H1 from Mililani to Pearl City.
If you can rollerblade up hill, it'll work. Mililani is in the central highlands of the island. It's a hill all the way from Pearl City to Mililani. Waipio Valley is going to be your major problem, as stated above.
There are no other routes between Mililani and PC. Either H2/H1 or Kamehameha Hwy. Best bet, a car or small scooter/motorcycle.

What are costs of scooters? How about insurance for them? They look like fun, and it looks like it would be great for commuting and escalating gas prices.

For scooters/mopeds 50cc or less, driver's license and bike registration. No insurance, no safety checks.
50cc scooter prices have a wide range. Used ones start as low as $300. New ones over a thousand. Shop around. Craigslist is a good place to start.
The other option is to get a motorcycle license and buy a proper sized scooter or motorcycle.
As a 50cc scooter rider who rides on Kam Hwy for short stretches, I'd suggest the latter if you're going to commute all the way to PC. The extra power and speed will help you to keep up with traffic, making it a safer ride. As with anywhere else, we have our knuckleheads. I have to ride on a short 25 mph stretch of Kam that doesn't have a bike lane. About 1/8 mile. I still manage to get buttheads behind me trying to go around or tailgate even if I'm doing 35 mph.

I just bought a brand new Rexy 50 from Cycle Imports of Hawaii.
It's bright yellow! :) With the Bully lock, bike cover, two tune-ups included.
Cost me under $1,600 out the door. With no insurance, less maintenance and gas saving costs. It should be free in a year!!! I took all their silly stickers off so I can put my own silly stickers on soon. HaHa! Sorry, no photos yet.
Oh yeah, it takes me 20 minutes from Date St. near Kapahulu to the Bishop Museum for work using back streets and School St. :D
