View Full Version : How do you eat your Pop Tarts?

I picked some up for a possible snack today, and I stuck it into our drink box. I heard poptarts are good when frozen (but since we don't have a freezer, the drink box is the next best thing)

Toasted is best, IMO.

never heard of eating them frozen.

my fave way is under the broiler, then slather some butter on top. I espeically love the brown sugar cinnamon ones like that.

My hubby eats them with butter and to too it off with brown sugar and cinnamon on them too!

My kids eat them straight out of the box or toasted.

Me? I don't like pop tarts. But I can barely stand maybe for a desert the smores. I bet they would be great frozen.

But I do like those toaster streudel thingies.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I think PopTarts are disgusting.

I think I can count on one hand how many times I've eaten them in my lifetime and even then it was just two or three bites.

I guess it's because I feel like I'm biting into a sugar coated piece of cardboard. I know they're not that hard to bite into -- I've just always thought they were gross.

Same with when I bite into an uncooked piece of onion. Blech.

I don't like them either. We get them in massive amounts at Costco for the girls to pack for school snax and for when we hike. To me they are too sweet and the pastry isn't really worth the added calories to me. So I give them a miss. Not that a Kasha or a Zone bar taste any better.

On Alton Brown's Good Eats series, there is an episode called "A Pie in Every Pocket (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_32305,00.html?rsrc=search)" in which he describes all kinds of pocket pies, including toaster pastries (like Pop Tarts, but made from scratch and definitely more tasty!). He made them with a chocolate filling. Look pretty ono to me.

There's a product I grew up with in South Jersey called TastyKakes (http://www.tastykake.com/HomepageTemplate.aspx?PostingID=21&ChannelID=2); I loved their pies, butterscotch krimpetts, peanutbutter kandykakes and juniors. Their pies were fat rectangles flowing with filling--depending what was in season. Blueberry, rhubarb, chocolate eclair, lemon (my favorite!) and coconut. There was also cherry, apple, peach (yum!); oh my this is right before supper! I'm torturing myself! Anyway, they tried to market in Hawaii but the distance didn't do the product justice. And I think there are enough of us from the Delaware Valley who longed for them while they were on local store shelves, but our thighs spoke louder than our taste buds!

I think I can count on one hand how many times I've eaten them in my lifetime and even then it was just two or three bites. You can count me in on your take. Don't think I've ever been able to finish one, let alone the two that come in one foil/paper package.

(IIRC!!!) The pastry crust has this "doughy-pasty" flavor that, even after baked still tastes uncooked, along with some mystery jelly filling that, when heated, turns into "Tongue Napalm".

Overall, it just doesn't cut the implied convenience, IMO. Maybe not "disgusting", but just NOT good.

I'm stickin' with good ole' fashioned TOAST. ;)

Arrgh! Poptarts! I love them and have them on my list as have to eat foods when I get off this diet on 20th of this month!

Blueberry is my absolute favorite with the kalakoa sprinkles on the frosting. Toasted is best, but since I will be in a hotel on the 20th straight out of the box is winnahs!

Ah yes, TastyKakes. The DH grew up in New Jersey and was raised on them. Butterscotch Krimpets were his faves. So one year, as a surprise (and to stop him from constantly wailing about missing his butterscotch Krimpets) I ordered a gift pack for him that had assorted TastyKakes. He of course saved those butterscotch Krimpets for eating last, but when he did, he told me he was disappointed...they didn't taste like they did when he was a kid!:(

I used to eat the brown sugar and cinnamon variety all the time. Now, my middle son goes through phases where they're all he will eat for breakfast. (If not Pop Tarts, it's frozen waffles... still frozen.) I can't eat them out of the package, I need 'em toasted. But I agree, they're too sweet and rich and I usually don't get past the first one.

Leo Lakio

I, too, used to eat the frosted bs+c variety, but now I find them too sweet. If your area stores carry the "cinnamon roll" flavor, they are the same filling as bs+c, but with a lot less icing - you might enjoy that lower level of sugar. I keep some at home, and probably eat them once every other month or so, out of laziness.

Yes, Susie - Hostess fruit pies are still around, too, from berry flavors to lemon to chocolate, even. Chocolate considered a "fruit?" That's my kinda world.

As for TATTRAT's "mountain oyster" variety --- just ... avoid the "frosting," ok?

I had a gift pack sent to me a few years back, Miulang, and yes, it's just not the same as when we were a kid and the ingredients were raised by Jersey farmers. But I faked it and feigned fulfillment, enjoyment, satisfaction. And I'd give them another chance!!

Flaming Pop-Tarts Spark Georgia Suit
Trisha Renaud
Fulton County Daily Report
11-04-2002

Joining other jurisdictions such as Washington Township in New Jersey and Springfield, Ohio, Fulton County, Ga., now has its own flaming Pop-Tarts suit.

Allstate Insurance Co., filing on behalf of an insured, Deanna Robinson, is suing the Kellogg Co., makers of numerous varieties of Pop-Tarts, claiming that the toaster treat was the proximate cause of a Nov. 13, 2000, house fire that caused $10,742.16 in property damage.

The short complaint says that Kellogg's "negligently manufactured flammable Pop-Tarts" that caused the damage. Allstate is also suing the toaster manufacturer, Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex Inc. Allstate v. Hamilton Beach, No. 02VS037164E (Fult. St. Aug. 16, 2002).

Fulton County's is not the first such suit. Last year, a New Jersey couple sued Kellogg's after a Pop-Tart left in a toaster set their house ablaze, according to press accounts.

Thomas Nangle of Ohio, who was sued for allegedly causing property damage to a home after his Pop-Tarts caught fire, countersued Kellogg's for the damages.

Miami Herald humor columnist Dave Barry made that case famous in a 1993 column. (http://www.davebarry.com/natterings_files/poptarts.htm) Barry wrote that he had long held a "keen scientific interest in combustible breakfast foods," and so decided to conduct his own Pop-Tart experiment under properly controlled conditions: His wife was not at home. He described "scary flames shooting up 20 to 30 inches out of both toaster slots," a dramatic moment akin to Manhattan Project atomic scientists in New Mexico who witnessed "the massive blast that erupted from their first crude experimental snack pastry."

Nangle's lawyer had told the press he might call Barry as a witness, but wound up settling the case. Kellogg's paid $2,400 in what the company said at the time was a nuisance settlement. The case spawned numerous humor Web sites. (http://www.pmichaud.com/toast/)

One of Allstate's attorneys in the Fulton County case, Mike O. Crawford IV, an associate with Mary A. Miller & Associates, said he didn't have details on the local fire handy. But, he said, there is "some evidence suggesting that some of these Pop-Tarts or these toaster pastries have been flammable in the past," or more flammable than they should have been.

Kellogg's, in its answer, denies any liability and has asked the court to award it costs and attorney fees. The company is represented in the Fulton County case by James D. Meadows and Christopher S. Anulewicz of Atlanta's Meadows, Ichter & Bowers. Neither could be reached for comment. Kellogg's has maintained, according to press accounts, that Pop-Tarts are safe and don't cause fires.

Just HOW flammable should a Pop-Tart be?
And how was that acceptable level of flammability determined?

I guess there are still "fun" jobs to be had.
