When is it cool/not cool to post videos on websites like youtube? A couple sample scenarios:

1)old tape off of tv of an episode of a program not in existence anymore. Its low res and warpy/ugly, but the potential of digitizing it and uploading snippets exists. Cool/Not cool?

2)using cameraphone to catch some cute kids and their antics at the beach. Cool/not cool?

What do you think?

As a person who makes a living off of copyrighted material that I create, I SHOULD be against people posting stuff without permission, but that odd tv show that's not available on DVD, I WANT to see it on Youtube.

It's an internal moral battle. Definitely one causing lots controversy, cease and Desist orders and lawsuits with YouTube and MySpace.

As for the kids on the beach...if they're YOUR kids and they don't mind, why not ?

In this litigious society, neither is ethical. In the first instance, there are copyright issues involved. In the second, unless you obtain the consent of the individuals (or their guardians), you run the risk of being sued for invasion of privacy, or worse, predation. If it was your own kids, go for it, but why put it on youtube where it could be viewed by child predators looking for cheap thrills?

Well...for instance, if you had kids and your parents are 3000 miles away, it's great for them to be able to see their grandkids....having the stuff up on YouTube makes it easy.
Does, YouTube have any sort of Privacy preference settings for when you post stuff ? Like the way mySpace has Private settings for kids under 16. something like that would keep the child predators away.

Youtube is useful for so many things, but, the drawback is, that some people will use it for some not so great things. It's the drawback of the entire internet.

I must say tho'...people put stuff up there from some of my favorite old bands...stuff you'd NEVER see, like some old Deep Purple footage, or a Beatles clip...the fan part of me LOVES that, but of course, there is the copyright infringement issue...like I said...moral battle. But is the stuff is not commercially available, what can you do ?

I don't have a youtube account. I typed in "children bathing" and got some hits. I think the answer is no, youtube has no privacy settings.

Maybe, but the e-mail would be more private. Or use a private "invitation only" site to host your videos that you want to share with family and friends. But is the stuff is not commercially available, what can you do ?Umm...live without it?;)

Well...there's no downlaod time involved for the recipient..youtube loads pretty quick

Here's from the FAQ section of the user account with regards to Privacy :

Friends, Family, and any other lists you decide to create allow you to quickly share videos with a large group of people. Once you've added someone to your contact list, you can move them to your Friends list or any other list you’ve made. Then, you can easily send interesting videos to everyone on that list by clicking the "Share Video" link under the video player, checking the box next to the list you want to use, and clicking the "Send" button.

You can also set privacy settings for your contact lists, which allows you to make videos visible only to members of that list. This makes it easy to share personal videos only with friends or family, and other YouTube users will not be able to see them.

So You CAN limit your videos to only certain people....

Most people probably don't know that.
As far as living without the other stuff....I'd rather have the option of seeing it.

Then unfortunately, there are some pretty naive parents out there who continue to post their picures of their babes in bathtubs in the public area.

Send a DVD copy. It looks better anyway.
