I wrote earlier in another post...

http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=12699

...and then I was given the job of building up an associated website...

In the midst of creative ideas, I would like to find out what nightclubs were around in the 70's. It could be a Disco, or a venue where bands would play.

I'm thinking "The Infinity" or "Spats" as more disco, but they also doubled up for local bands to play.

If you got pictures that would help too. Fire away!!

p.s. thanks, in advance :)

I loved Trappers in the Hyatt Regency. Jimmy Borges was the resident jazz crooner but Trappers also hosted some pretty great jazz musicians...Dave Brubeck, Herbie Mann and Joe Sample to name a few. Such fun times!

Aw shucks! I didn't get here until 1981! I went to Moose McGillicuddy's at Pucks Alley the most. But mostly it was because I felt like a giant in discos where I was surrounded by cute little Japanese and Filipinas trolling for cute Japanese and Filipinas. So most of the time I was surfing dawn patrol and that required going to bed early.

Yes - the one by Michel's was called Bobby McGee's & I spent many evenings in that place.

My favorite was Rex's - hottest disco in Waikiki and also, great food! I had one of the first membership cards when it went that direction - never had to stand in line.

Nick's Fishmarket, Matteo's (just the bar, to start the evening).

Point After, Infinity and Spats were also a lot of fun.

ahhh, Waikiki in the 70's - all the ladies dressed up and the men were hot!

Sometimes, I really miss those days.................sigh.

Ahhhh...young and full of spirit!

Those were the days of wine and roses!:p

Shucks, there used to be a floating Chinese restaurant on the waterfront downtown. Had a disco that we used to go to regularly as we liked the "katonk" band that played there. It was one of those best kept secrets. Small crowd, small dance floor, good music. ;)

Nah. No Senior moments. I used to go there too. I used go all ova! hahahah

I was a Party Girl!:p

Had FuN but it's all in the past...well, sort of. Now, I go only to Chinatown and cause havoc once or twice a month.heheheh

It's great to remember the old days but that's what it is...the old days. We can never bring it back. We must let it go but always remember it with fondness. This past October I went to my 50th Bash Reunion in Las Vegas, it was great to see old friends and others who graduated in 1974. One thing I noticed from the event ~ we all treasured our memories of the seventies. When it was time to say goodbye we left the seventies behind.;)

Even till today, if any man ask me to dance, dey betta ask me properly or I going give um a Whack Whack!heheheh

I remember the ELEVATOR SHOES!!! Why? Cause I thought my late husband was taller den me. When I met him he looked 5'6. When we got married the bugga was 5'3.hahahah

btw: There was another Night Club as you enter Kaimuki. It's a Storage Place now. Near the Freeway.

Were you from the neighbor islands or rural Oahu? The "city chicks" told us that most Honolulu guys would "ask" with a short jerk of their heads and just walk away after the music ended. The gals would then reurn to their seats unescorted. We got "points" for courtesy.

"Were you from the neighbor islands or rural Oahu?"

Wahiawa, of course. :p The town chicks liked us country bumpkins. Used to get plenty parking lot fights between the CBs and the townies. The CBs used to cruise through the town high schools, like Kalani and Kaimuki when in session, with their hotrods.....uncapped. The townies used to come park in our high school parking lot and wait. When the right guys came out........RUMMMMBLE!!!

Wife asked how come I know the island so well. Told her we used to cruise to meet girls from all over. Lessee, I knew girls from Waialua HS, Aiea, Kaimuki, Castle, St. Andrews Priory, Punahou, Roosevelt, Kailua and a couple of others. Eh, the Waialua girls called us Wahiawa guys townies. <LOL>

The only place I ever got asked to dance was at Pecos River Cafe. Dat wuz a trip! Never seen so many single women hard up to two step. Any guy showing up without a date is fair game. I never got to go clubbing in the 70's...cuz I was too young.. .YIKES!! But my favorite music is from the 70's than anywhere else. The year that I graduated in 81', was the same year that I got married :(

...and my d$ck was cut short

Auntie, the "city slickers," AKA "townies," must have learned from us "country bumpkins" and/or neighbor islanders about manners and courtesy. We'd always hear about the "jerk of the head" from the urban Honolulu chicks - they were not used to actually being ASKED to dance. Often times, there was nary a word exchanged .........

I will maintain my manners tonight at IGE's "Flashback Friday." WASABI is playing.

tho i was born in the 70s i was lucky to have had several forays at cilly's and the point after. some of my favorite memories from my very late teens and early twenties are from those two places.

honestly, i'm still ticked that the residents of the bldg where cilly's was located got the place closed (that's my impression, anyway--someone correct me if i'm wrong). i mean, the club was there for years and if you don't like the noise from the club...don't move there.

it's as stupid as the complaints i hear every year from my work's neighbors that we cause water to flood at their homes. um, hello, we're on a mountain, and you live downhill from us. whether we are here or not, that water is gonna end up in your yard! gaaaaaghh! no matter how much we prove that our drainage is up to par, we're still the bad guys. *grumble*

Not really "night clubs" and probably pre-disco, but I remember 2 places in Waikiki, one on Kalakaua, down across from Kuhio Beach called "The Lemon" and one odda one at the corner of Ala Wai and McCully called "The Tomato" or "The Red Tomato."

I used to go to the Sweet Marie's bar in the Marketplace long time ago.

And had a nice disco in the Miramar(?) Hotel? Right near the entrance to Waikiki, across Kalakaua from where Lau Yee Chai used to be? Forget what da name, but I used to sneak in there when I was 17 and try pick up tourist wahine. They weren't having any of it! :D Guess I wasn't so slick. :)

Then when I was 18, they lowered the drinking age to... *GASP* ... 18!!! Yeeha! What a party night THAT WAS!

Used to spend lotta time cruising Kalakaua -- both ways. Would come from Ewa end near Ft. DeRussy, cruise real slow up Kalakaua looking for chicks and spocking all the hot rod cars.

Then would U-turn at the Dillingham Fountain and cruise back the other way. U-turn again at DeRussy and Ala Moana stop light!

Did you go "willingly" and "knowingly"

I was 16 at the time...just finished working at Jack in the Box on Dillingham Blvd, graveyard shift. My friend Marciel said, "let's go check this place out"...so, he and I walked down to where the theatre was. I didn't know where we were going until I looked at the front door. There was this old lady collecting tickets. She asked me if I was 18....uh..."Yeah"...gave her my $3 and walked in.

Imagine this place..."musty" was the smell of the day. There were about 10 guys in the theatre spread out just enough to see just heads, but no one can see each other (just in case jr. pops out).

On the screen was Star Vigin....certainly NOT a virgin in any of the orifices that she had...in fact, she showed her prowess of her skills all at the same time.

Poor girl.

Anyway, sex education back in those days was taboo...at least no pictures. From the movie, I actually got to see how it's done. Really. Sorry about this off topic post...just felt compelled to right about this.

by the mid '70s there had been a change in the ownership and it became just "Rex's". Just the latest name change in a place that had been open since the early '60s.

Pauline Wilson of Ox/Seawind is a high school acquaintance of mine from the old days. She was a cheerleader at Hilo High in the mid-to-late '60s.

I used to be a waitress and then the manager at the Sandbox, Hawaii's Home of Coutry Western Music...205 Sand Island Access Road. Live radio from KAHU of the band with Bill Spillyard and company.

Howard Harias was the owner...although for a couple of years he disappeared, having run off to Vegas with $$$ sewed into his pockets, but came back and found financing to begin again.

That was a lot of fun.

The place is still there but it has been a strip club called Dancers for almost 20 years now...but 'Penny's" is still next door serving their ono curry stew in the early mornings.

Merrakish (sp), Atlantis and The Point After

Wasn't the Merrakish more of an 80's club?

Infinity at the Sheraton was definately a 70's club.

Does Kojaks count as a night club? That's where Kalapana used to perform live.

Magic Mushroom definately 70's.

I keep forgetting that nightclub across the street from King's Alley. I think that was an early 80's club.

Spats in the basement of the Hemmeter Center

And Bobby Magee's. The last of the hold outs was one of the best local night clubs

I went to Rex's...but it was a porno theatre...Rex's 1 & 2.. and I saw my first XXX movie.."Star Virgin".

OMG

I was hooked.
LOL...that was in the Hotel St. area. Busy Bee Theater and had one place that showed live sex shows. Remember Glades? Boys will be girls revue starring Prince Hanalei. Those was the days you could drive on Hotel St. and go around the block to harass hookers.

I remember the Busy Bee...when I was elementary school, my dad used to drive by, and my mom would shake her head, cuz he said..."it's on the way home"... Ha!!

My mother pointed out to me the "shims". Never got to see the live sex shows...Bummer...but certainly tons of porn. There was this place that had the peep shows too...that 5 minutes for $.25.

Sex was literally WREAKING on every street corner.

Anyway, back on topic...Club Hubba Hubba (live Swing music)...never been in there, but a friend of mine's dad used to own that place. Now it's the swank Club 35 or sumtin like that...the one with the tree in the back alley.

Wow to go further back, Prince Hanalei started at Dyke's Tavern on Kalihi St. right below Nimitz Hwy. What I remember most about Club Hubba Hubba are the troughs full of mothballs in the mens bathroom. How about Ayala's for the best kachikachi music and ono pasteles and panadijas(?).

Ayala's was the Borinque bar on School St. near Mitsukens. House of Dragon Chop Suey uses mothballs in the troughs.

No. Club Hubba Hubba is all boarded up. Club 35 used to be the The Swing Club owned by the late Chis Vicari. His daughter now owns the buildings which houses Club 35, Next Door, Amy's, Nicki's Arcade, Mini Garden and Little Village. Also, the old Risque theater building that was burned and now vacant.

The Hubba Hubba building is owned by Alan Stack and family. It will be remodeled soon. The Restaurant where Benny's was will also brought back to it's prime condition.;) Project is to take at least 1-1 1/2 years. :D

Oh man I got slapped in the face when I remarked to my girlfriend, "hey those guys look better than you!" yeah I deserved that one:D That was back when you could drive on Hotel street.

In Waikiki there was Jilly's on Lewers street. And in the mid 80's there was an upstairs exclusive Japanese club called Club Rappongi on one of the side streets off of Kalakaua in Waikiki. I went with one of the Ariyoshi sons (of Gov. Ariyoshi) and didn't know it was a high class escort service. Amazing place with posh lounges and a steady reserve of expensive whiskey held by each club member. When we went there, a snap of the finger and Mama san delivers two georgous women all dolled up from the "stable" to our sofa for an evening of whatever we wanted. If I didn't like any of the girls they were ushered away and several more were paraded past us. Hey it was a private club. That was an interesting evening/next day.

Up some very narrow steep stairs too with a nice big well-dressed braddah at the bottom steps.

stage 1 is complete... So if anyone has pictures from the night clubs in the past...that is forthcoming. Oh..and check out the jukebox...several cover songs from Greenwood, and a few recordings such as "Cheerleader Strut"...straight off the 45rpm. I'm still waiting for several bands to get back to me like Aura, and Phase VII.
