I find it interesting that the Native Hawaiian population has actually decreased in HawaiiMeanwhile, in Hawaii the group's population decreased by more than 1,300 from 2005 to 2006, according to the state data center, which provides statistics to the U.S. Census Bureau.

"They are moving to the mainland," said Eugene Tian, chief of the state statistics branch.

Tian said in the last six years, the estimated native Hawaiian population in the state has decreased from 282,656 in 2000 to 274,766 in 2006.Is it because the cost of living here is so high? Hawaii has the programs (like OHA) for them, so why leave?
What are your thoughts? For those of you that left, why did you? Will you ever come back? What would it take for you to return?

I've posted that I'm currently a resident of Las Vegas,
but I will be moving back in a year or two.

To understand why I moved to the mainland I would have
to take you back to when I was a young girl... and, uhmm,
that was longggg ago. I'll keep it short, though.

Life was so-so growing up, but I knew there were other
things out there that I was missing out on, and so at the
age of 18 I joined the military and left the islands. It was
nice to know that I was right, I was missing out on things
not of Hawaii. The journey was enlightening! Sometimes it
wasn't too bad, other times it was tough. No regrets, though.
It was an experience I'll never forget.

I wanted the same thing for my boys so I moved them from
Hawaii to Alaska. We lived in Alaska for 8 years before moving
here. We've taken trips to California and Washington, and up
until two years ago, they'd visit "home" twice (or more) a year.
I figure it's better for them to learn it first-hand than to learn
it from movies. :D

We didn't leave because we were struggling financially. And,
honestly, I don't think anyone really HAVE to move to make a
better living. I know it's expensive, but I did what I needed to
be able to afford it. If I needed a degree to get a good paying
job, I'd get one. If I needed something else to get myself
qualified to get the job I wanted, then I got qualified. It wasn't
always easy, but it was either that or whine like a I was a victim
of some major conspiracy. I chose to do the former.

As for programs like OHA.... I don't know, I haven't been able to
get anything from them just because I am Hawaiian.
