I was sad to read that this place will close in July. I must have been on Oahu only a day or two when we went down there to buy plants for our house. Even though it wasn't conveniently located to where we live, the dearly beloved favored it as he had been going there since childhood with his mother. We went back frequently and I'll really miss the expert advice on how to manage plants in the local climate.

Bummer. That's the only place that has an effective "nutweed" killer too. I won't miss backing out onto Beretania though.

I enjoyed the coverage and interviews on KITV and KHON. Denby Fawcett talked about how the shop helped save her plants, and how UH would refer people with ailing plants when they couldn't figure it out. Carol Oda, 90, talked straight to the camera, thanking her customers. Her son was in line to carry on the tradition, but he died of cancer last year. (Neither grandson is planning a retail career.) Kudos to her for working so hard for so long.
The Garden House was an odd green oasis in that corner of town, prime real estate ($3.2 million) at Piikoi and Beretania. Whatever takes its place (probably another gas station), it probably won't have a fifth of the character.
