It appears Kauai has banned anymore big box retailers from building on Kauai (link (http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007705250377))
I really think this is poor decision on the part of the Kauai County Council, especially after Costco, Wal-Mart, Kmart and Home Depot have opened stores on Kauai. Worse yet it gives another black eye for Hawaii's business climate.
The Big Island County Council is considering a less stringent ban. Which would ban big box retailers which A) Are more than 90,000 square feet B) Carry 25,000 or more items and C) Have a 20,000 square foot grocery section. But I really believe it will be toothless legislation. As Wal-Mart is planning on building Supercenter on DHHL land, which county zoning does not apply to.You can read more more of my thoughts on this on my blog.
Wal-Mart or another big box retailer should take Kauai County to court to overturn this legislation. The same goes if any other islands pass similar legislation. As legislation like this limits choices and ultimately harms the communities in the end.
