tiki's thread inspired me to ask this question and seek help on HT. I'm planning a short (3-4 day) vacation to Oahu at the end of summer. I'm tired of the Waikiki scene, and I want to truly relax. Are there any good, cheap hotels outside of Honolulu? All I'm looking for is A/C so I can sleep in until noon, wi-fi, and shopping.

You could try the Pagoda Hotel.

I was hoping for outside of town. Plus, a coworker got eaten alive by bed bugs there last summer. Word on the streets is that they're just as bad as the California hotel when it comes to bed bugs.

We just got back from Oahu - we stayed in a beachfront vacation rental home in Laie, which was right across from the Polynesian Cultural Center. We absolutely loved it. Much cooler & less crowded. There is a hotel there called the Laie Inn I think. It looked very well kept up/clean from the outside at least. If you want to get into Waikiki, you can take "The Bus" from there if you don't want to rent a car. Everything is closed on Sunday since it's a big Mormon town. Many beach parks close by.
