It's Pow Wow Time in Waikiki - June 30th & July 1st, 2007
Dust off your moccasins and shake out your shawls. It's time to pow wow in Waikiki. Sacred Island Soul, a nonprofit corporation, is hosting the Waikiki Beach Pow Wow and Multi-Cultural Dance & Music Festival on Saturday and Sunday, June 30 and July 1, 2007 at Kapiolani Park, in Waikiki, Hawaii, 8 am to 6 pm, both days. Everyone is invited to attend this free event, which will feature dancing, drumming, singing, arts and crafts, and food. All dancers and singers are welcome. No drugs or alcohol are allowed.
One of the special guests attending the pow wow is Master of Ceremonies, Edward Benton Benai, who is known as Bawdwaywidun Banaise ("Banaise") in his own language. Benaise is a full-blooded Wisconsin Ojibway of the Fish Clan and a Spiritual Teacher of the Lac Courte Orielles Band of the Ojibway Tribe. Benaise has a Master's Degree in Education and was one of the founders of the American Indian Movement. He also started the Red School House, an Indian-controlled school for Indian students, grades K through 12. He has been a pioneer in culture-based curriculum and Indian alternative education who believes that education should be built on identity, spirituality, music, heritage and pride.
As author of The Mishomis Book, Benaise has set down the oral history of the Ojibway nation and presented his life within the family circle. He learned from the tribal elders who possessed the memories and wisdom of the Ojibway and carefully preserved the ancient traditions. The book is an account of the culture, history and philosophy of the Ojibway. Benaise believes, "It is time to talk with our Brothers and Sisters of other nations, colors and beliefs. The ideas and philosophies of yesterday may be the key to the world family's future.
The Waikiki Pow Wow and Multicultural Dance and Music Event will be an opportunity for people of many nations, colors and beliefs to share their traditions. This gathering will feature Native American singing, dancing, crafts and hot, delicious frybread. The celebration will also highlight other cultural performances, including hula by Halau Na Lei Nani Owaialua, ukulele music by Sean Tiwanak, and musical performances by Buckz Boyz. Local vocalist Jamie Spears is also scheduled to appear.
Other guests include: Host Drum: Spirit Bird (Waipahu, Hawaii); Invited Drum: Ice Wolf (Twin Cities, Minnesota); Head Man Dancer: Little Half Moon (Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa); and Head Woman Dancer: Ogi-Mah-Banaise-Equay (Mount Pleasant, Michigan).
There are ample volunteer opportunities for those who want to help with the pow wow -- no experience required. For more information, please call 808-548-6200 or send email to sacredtreasures@hawaiiantel.net. For vendor information, call 808-677-1729.
