Definately wasn't me!!.
I really like the iPhone, but I hate who it is being serviced with!!.
I use to be with AT & T, then they switched over to Cingular. I hate Cingular, that is why I switched over to Tmobile (with my hubby).
Now that "At & T" is "supposidly" back on the market, who knows when they are actually going to change their mind & switch everyone to Cingular or to what ever company that just happen to be near, or most convenient (again).
To be honest, if Tmobile services the iPhone, I would consider getting it.
At this point, I will not ever trust AT & T again, & will not move over just for that damn iPhone!!.
Who knows, AT & T might go out of business again, & have their "new" &/or old customers move/merg to another company.
Companies such as AT & T are not trustworthy (in my book)!!.
I will only have trust to a company that wont change their minds back & forth, & will continue to keep their business & become a stand alone company!!. :)
That's my two cents.
Aloha.

i went to the apple store with friends last night at around 11pm (they still have phones) after seeing die more harder or free-er and the iphone looks awesome. however, id predict that the price on it will drop, especially in conjunction with a 2 year service plan. if its got a 1 year exclusive, tmobile may get it next year. if i had money to burn, i might have picked one up.

By The Way....
I heard that the iPod has more capacity in donwloading music than the iPhone itself.
For the music part, I would rather use my own iPod just for that. I have a little over 600 music on my ipod, can that iPhone handle as much or more? , I bet NOT!!.
Possibly for the internet & phone system, May~be.
Now, if the iphone can totally match the iPod, capacity wise, then I would be in heaven, if I had enough cash, & they are with Tmobile, I would seriously consider getting it. :)
Aloha.

Line gets longer, freebies get better
Looks like there are only 50 or so people in line now.
Starbucks is giving out samples of their iced tea. Williams-Sonoma is handing out brownie samples.
Advertiser sports reporter Stacy Kaneshiro reports that there are about 40 people in line at Kahala Mall.
Lifecaster Ryan Ozawa just walked by. He's streaming live video from here. He's at the end of the line.
Poor Ryan is standing at the END of the line. Boo hoo. In that KHON photo, isn't that the wall by Long's Drugs? That's a long @ss line! :p Nah, I can tell that's in front of Macy's.
Just curious how many of these people rushing to get the iPhone on its first day on the market are more interested in bragging rights of "I got it first", than they are in actual NEED of the features and new technology it provides.
There's one feature (or lack there of) I read that kinda' sucked. Apparently you can't use the music loaded in your iTunes library as a ring tone. If that's true, that really sucks. Also, the abbreviated browser can't utilize the Flash plug-in. So many sites using Flash (which I hate anyway) won't be viewable.
That direct-access selective voice mail feature is pretty cool.
Surely there will be software and firmware updates for it in the near future.
IMO, it's best to wait for the 2nd generation of a new product so the manufacturer can address any bugs and iron out the kinks. Case in point, we bought the first generation G5 tower, and it had a problem with the mother board's RAM slots. To this day, we can't add more. Never got around to sending the machine back to Apple, as we NEEDED the machine at the time as our primary OS X server. It's fine, but still.
I like the electronic architecture, compact size and light weight of flash memory, but I'd be willing to sacrifice size and weight for the added storage space of a built-in (say 120 gig?) hard drive in the iPhone. That would be nice.

I would love to have the IPhone - will probably wait til Xmas bonus time though.
When I got my first cell here in 1996, the company was Honolulu Cellular - great service. Then they sold to AT&T - great service. Then they sold to Cingular - ok service. Now it's back to AT&T - great service. I've always been happy with my plan, coverage, equipment & customer service. I have an excellent service plan & was able to move that plan over to Cingular last year with very few problems. TMobile would have to GIVE me the IPhone to get me to change carriers! plus the other carriers can't even come close to my service plan & monthly rate!

I'm reading of a number of short-comings to the phone. Part of me has to wonder if this 1g iPhone won't go the way of the Newton. Revolutionary, yet in the end it's impact was more on what features it introduced and forced the competitors to do then what itself did.

I'm not that impressed by the iPhone; however, it's not bad for a first-generation effort. For the price, it should have an anodized aluminum shell instead of a plastic one, removable batteries, voice-recognition dialing, a flush headphone jack instead of a recessed one, an included leather carrying case and Bluetooth headset.

I understand that you cannot directly download iTunes to the iPhone via the website.
Like most have indicated here, I wouldn't shell out $600 for a 1st generation item of any kind. Too many bugs and too expensive. I believe Apple will do to iPhone users much as they've done to their Mac users, and that is to sell an expensive product on the first round then sell the same product or an improved version at a cheaper price on the second round.
I was driving down Kilauea Avenue in Downtown Hilo yesterday and passed by the Cingular store there and saw a line developing. People with lawn chairs and coolers waiting in line. I mumbled under my breath, "Suckers". Is it THAT important to be the first to have an iPhone?
ANYBODY knows the next generation phone will be cheaper and more feature laden than the first. Plus that wait in line will be in vain when everybody has them and it's not a fashion statement anymore. And that's exactly what it is...A FASHION STATEMENT. This isn't a limited edition item. It's not as if Apple isn't gonna market anymore of these.
Now if you want practicallity, this phone is shock resistant and water proof. If it sounds like a Casio G-shock wristwatch, you got the manufacturer correct. It's called the Casio G-Zone (http://estore.vzwshop.com/gzone/)and it's sold by Verizon.
You can go swimming with it and even make calls in the shower with it. Plus it's rugged so it'll take the occasional drop to the asphalt. Try that with an iPhone! Note the belt loop?
Now for the clincher for those who had to buy an iPhone with a two year committment. You can buy an iPhone without the two-year committment (http://www.i4u.com/article9852.html)believe it or not if you have bad credit and can do the month to month service plan. AT&T isn't publicizing this policy but it's there.
Sneaky AT&T but hey they want to capture everybody's money so there you go...Bad credit? No problem...you can still get an iPhone without the committment.

Like all tech, it will drop in price and it is only a matter of time when the NEXT big thing comes along. I will check it out, but do not plan on buying on in the immediate future. Seems like a really cool gadget though, don't get me wrong, I have just bough too many new things that are out dated and 200 bucks less a couple of months down the road. I won't let it happen this time.......I promised AF:)

I'm a firm believer in this opinion Pomai. As much of an Apple fan as I am (there are 5 Apple computers in my house) I made the mistake of buying the VERY first generation iBook...remember the cool clamshell ones ?
Hard drive took a crap in 2 months, and I was screwed. I've said this before, I'll say it again. Apple Beta tests their products on the paying public....LOTS of issues with the Version 1 products....enough people report an issue, THEN they fix it, which I think is BOGUS.
2 rules I live by with Apple
1. NO version 1 products brand new on the market
2. ALWAYS buy apple care
I say wait at least 6 months before looking into an iPhone.
But, that's just ME.

Caught on tape!
Hey, if you don't want an iPhone, you don't want an iPhone.
Yes, the "Rev 1" of any new device, particularly a company's first foray into any new market, is guaranteed to have issues. There's nothing wrong with not being an early adopter. You have fewer headaches that way. But, if you have that gene, well... you also know what you're getting into. It comes with the territory.
No doubt there'll be a new iPhone with 3G and all the bugs worked out. Oh well, them's the breaks. In technology, you're obsolete before you pull out your wallet. The way my wife looks at it is, it just means she'll be getting an iPhone soon (when I move on to the next one).
Yes, AT&T is such an evil company, Satan is a major stakeholder. Hey, if I could choose who Apple's partner was in this, it wouldn't be the Death Star. But, well, I'm hoping my admiration for Apple and satisfaction with its product line will outweight the AT&T issues.
The EDGE connection isn't fast. But I was used to browsing the web on my Treo 700p, and that was no Ferrari. And it had to "connect" every time, like dial-up. And I had to stick to "mobile" versions of websites to get around. The iPhone feels just as fast, with no "connect" process, and when a page loads, it's the real web page. Portrait or landscape, zoom and scroll, it's just like the commercials. It's fantastic.
Yes, most people don't need an iPhone. If you're happy with the phone that your provider gave you for free for a one-year contract, keep it! If you just make calls and send an SMS or so a week, hell, the iPhone would be a waste. But if you make heavy use of a smartphone, if you actually use all those features... the iPhone integrates them beautifully.
For me it comes down to my belt. For a long time, I had a basic cell phone, a PDA (a Palm Pilot, Palm III, Visor Prism, Sony Clie), and an iPod on my person. When the Treo came around, I finally got to combine my phone and PDA. And frankly, the Treo 700p remains easily one of my favorite pieces of technology ever. For the last few years, it ran my life. But, it still had to share my belt, my desk, my power strip with an iPod. Finally, the iPhone comes, and shrinks down three devices to one. And, most importantly, each of its elements -- the phone, the PDA, and the iPod -- are all individually improvements over the individual devices I used to have. The fact that I'm a Mac user is a big part of that, but... contacts, bookmarks, calendar, music, podcasts, whatever, everything works seamlessly.
And no, I didn't need to stand in line. Hey, I don't need to stand in line for an Apple Store grand opening, either. Is a T-shirt worth six hours being silently judged by passers by? Would I lose the ability to enter an Apple Store if I wasn't among the first few hundred to cross the threshold? No. What can I say, it's a social occasion, a special event. You know the people around you share at least one ridiculous bond, and I've yet to come away from one of these things without a new friend.
Yesterday? I got to know a Gundam-loving, Starbucks-working kid named Michael with whom we took turns watching stuff so the other could get food or take a bathroom break. I took his photo in line and with his iPhone so he could send it to his Mainland friends. There was the guy from a cement company on Sand Island who paid his secretary to hold a spot, and he talked for hours about skiing with another guy, who in turn asked me all about Macs and talked himself into making the switch (and took my card for some consulting). And a nice old lady who was in line to get two iPhones for her kids, except one of them called her from Seattle with his new iPhone, but she didn't care because by the time her husband arrived they both wanted one for themselves.
Anyway.
Trust me. Apple lines are different from, say, those lines for the Nintendo Wii. I mean, in most cases there's a serious scarcity issue, so people sleep outside WalMarts out of desperation. People got beat up over Wiis! (I almost understand, though. I love the Wii!) The iPhone? Apple's got as many as three million units in the pipeline. You could walk into the Apple Store today, no lines or crowds, and buy an iPhone off the shelf. I expected that. But I wanted to be there, for the fun and insanity of it all. I realize how ridiculous it is to be cheered like a rockstar for walking out of a store with a small black box, but I loved it anyway.
I've only had the iPhone a day, but so far, even with all the caveats, "yeah buts" and well-worn disclaimers about what it doesn't do? It greatly surpasses my expectations. It's elegantly designed, it's sturdier than I thought (yes, I've already dropped it -- one reason I'm glad it's an 8GB flash device and not a 30GB hard drive), dead simple to use (I never opened the manual)... I'm not just satisfied. I'm downright elated.
You might not want an iPhone, and you probably don't need an iPhone. But I'm absolutely convinced that this thing changes almost everything about mobile phones and devices in general. Whatever your preferred carrier, brand, design... finally companies will begin to invest and innovate seriously in this space. So things will get better for everyone, even if you're not an Apple fanatic like me!

Me, too! But I carry it a little further! My first iPod was a 3G. My first iBook was purchased in 2003! Once the MacBooks came out I bought a Powerbook! My contract with Cingular/AT&T was up earlier this year and I intentionally moved over to Hawaiian Telcom so I wouldn't be tempted by the iPhone for 2 years!!! I don't handle glitches and bugs very well, being the untechie tutu that I am! :D

talk to me about the lack of thumboard, please. That feature is way more important to me than cruising the net or touching my music (I loved how SJ said that at the Expo). I can take my treo and thumb blindly under a desk in a mtg and I daresay that email, sms, docs2go, entourage-syncing calendar are the most critical elements of my phone use, outside of the actual phone feature.
How does it communicate? Is it odder or easier than you anticipated?

I was wondering the same thing. I love my Ipaq for the ability to type.
Does the iPhone have a stylus and pop up key board? What is the input method on it?
pzarquon
June 30th, 2007, 08:00 PM
It's easier than expected, but you won't type blind on this thing. It's a beautiful glass surface... but forget any tactile feedback (beyond a subtle clicking and the occasional quick vibration). Even the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg said in his review that the keyboard made him want to throw the iPhone out the window three days in. By a week in, though, it was no problem at all.
It's partially 'predictive text,' which I generally dislike, but it's smarter than anything else I've used. Easily 90 percent of the time, I can just type away, and when I type 'yekepginr' it becomes 'telephone' and I didn't even notice. But you need more deliberate entry for proper names, and it autocapitalizes (which my Treo also did), which has always been a UI pet peeve. People need to learn to capitalize correctly on their own, for crying out loud! :p
I'm already typing faster than I thought I'd be on day one, but I know I'll never get up to Treo speeds. Do I prefer a physical keyboard? Yes. So I don't see the Treo becoming a suit-and-tie business device (though the PDF and Office document reader is a nice touch). But so far, it's a fair trade for the full-surface screen, for the other things I do.

What is the big problem with AT&T? is it service, coverage, cost? or is it the corporate mentality? somebody please, explain to this very slow & apparently dumb person why everyone on here hates AT&T except me?
:D

June 30th, 2007, 08:31 PM
Hoping not to turn this into an AT&T thread, speaking for myself I'll say that the service level is fine (most of my AT&T/Cingular friends are satisfied), and the cost is actually cheaper than what I paid for my Treo. So my objections, at least, are more ideological. Google "AT&T" and "evil" and you'll find a lot of material. Then again, you could probably type any company name and get a mountain of "they suck" rants.
Practically speaking? I'd say the iPhone is 80 percent Apple, 20 percent AT&T. I'll give Apple's contribution an A+, and AT&T's a B-. On balance, a winner.

What I'd like to see is a cell phone that when in the car becomes the stereo's faceplate allowing in-car hands free calls. When you get to you destination you take the faceplate off and it becomes your MP3 capable cellphone.
You take it home and slip it in a docking cradle connected to your Media Center PC and it becomes part of your home entertainment center and integrates to your home's Skype telephone system. It could also TiVo programs to be viewed later on with the detached faceplate much like a video iPod.
While it's docked it syncs your calender and phone functions downloading all of the missed phone calls while you were out so you can retrieve them while on the go. While docked it also can download more music or even podcasts to be played in your car stereo when attached or unattached when in the office or out of the car.

well i got one! i'm a early adopter as well. my first impression is that all the pictures, videos, and commercials do not do it justice. when you actually start using it, you see how awesome it really is... the multi-touch interface (which is highly patented) is amazing. i'm sure this phone is not for everyone, no product is, but it is a breakthrough product.
>id predict that the price on it will drop, especially in conjunction with a 2 year service plan
it's a apple product just like an ipod, the price will drop when the new version comes out at the same price point... they will also start making different versions, just like there are different versions of ipods.
>I heard that the iPod has more capacity in donwloading music than the iPhone itself.
The iPhone comes in 4gb and 8gb versions. so minus the operating system y our looking at approx 800 (4gb) and 1800 (8gb) song capacities
As for price the 4gb is $500 so if you look at it at $199 for a 4gb iPod Nano, then the phone is $300 with full widescreen multitouch, wifi, etc... and $600 for 8gb, so minus $250 for 8gb iPod Nano you got $350 for the phone. RAZR's were selling for that much when they came out...
I've never had any problems wtih AT&T/Cingular so i can't complain there.
>I'm reading of a number of short-comings to the phone. Part of me has to wonder if this 1g iPhone won't go the way of the Newton. Revolutionary, yet in the end it's impact was more on what features it introduced and forced the competitors to do then what itself did.
I guarantee this will NOT be a newton, first off they've already sold over 300,000 of these for the first weekend and they are also ipods.. people i think forget that. as for shortcomings.. do you have examples? they are minor and remember this is OSX OS that will be updated often to add features, etc.. (there's already works to add MS Exchange use for corporate email) any application that can be created as a web2.0 based can be added to iPhone, so the sky's the limit for these type of apps. also remember that the Newton was not Steve Jobs baby, he killed it off once he took over Apple again in the late 90's
If you really sit down and use it you'll see why it's so great.... on the other hand if you are just fine with a basic $50 phone to make calls then this phone is definitely overkill. I need a great PDA/Smartphone for email, web, calendars, etc and so far it fits my needs perfectly.
Maybe i'll try to do a updated review after a month of use.

Typical. Frankly, I'm hearing more about the iPhone from people who probably won't ever get one from those who are genuinely interested. A couple of weeks ago, a former coworker of mine crossed the street downtown to talk to me about it... but all he really wanted to say was he thought it was stupid. Heh.
MonkeyMan asked for impressions and reviews. He got 20 posts of people explaining why they're uninterested or why the iPhone is too flawed to consider. Two of us who did get one actually had some experiences to share, however. But we're just amusingly "justifying" ourselves.
LocalMotion and I have both explicitly acknowledged the ways in which the iPhone won't work for many people. There are lots of phones that do a lot more than the iPhone, just like there are lots of digital audio players that do more than the iPod. But what Apple does, it does well -- it does what it needs to do, but keeps it simple and sexy. I just thought I'd answer MonkeyMan's original question, since I actually had some thoughts to share.
I knew I should've saved my energy for my blog. Real geeks read that! :p

Pzarquon basically summed up why I'd even consider getting an iPhone -- it's a working tool that wraps several needed tools into one sleek and highly usable case.
One thing I'd like to be able to do is plug in a full-sized portable keyboard, like one of those rubber roll-up jobs, either through Bluetooth or USB, when you need to do any serious typing.

what do you mean by better?
just cause a device has more features doesn't make it better. i'm not saying the iphone is the greatest, but i've used the Treo 650 and Nokia E61 and i prefer the iphone.
The user interface is really the big selling point, you just have to try it out. and also there are not TONS of settings to get lost in. it's setup very well.
Like other apple products the iPhone puts smartphones in the hands of people who would ordinarily be afraid to use one...

hey hey hey now...leave room for those of us who are likely to cross that iDivide at some point o ranuther, ok? My own journey with the treo started waaay back in those Handspring Visor dayz and entirely due to their compatibility with macs. But I need a keyboard and Office compatibility first, especially as I frequently type in 'O.H. and don't want that to be autocorrected.
Some of us have open-minds about it and want it to succeed. Performas, iMacs, Powerbooks, MacBooks, iPods and Airports--I don't think I've met an apple product that I didn't buy.

as for shortcomings.. do you have examples?

Something else I wonder about: All of the fancy phones I've seen so far have been to support businesses. They may be toys in the hands of executives, but it's the company that pays for them. And that's because it can integrate with the business.
Apple historically has done poorly in the enterprise market. It's strong point has been with home/individuals. Given the high cost, if it doesn't get integrated with the enterprise, I'll have to wonder how many they'll end up selling.
For now, I'll let someone else bleed. :D At the moment it's too much money for my taste.
Question: How much does the service cost? That's what's kept me away for the high-end phones. I can deal with the handset price, it's the monthly service cost that I can't justify for personal use.

the "iPhone" plans start at $59 for 450 anytime min, unlimited M2M, 5000 N&W, unlimited data, internet, email, 200 text messages.
then it goes to $79 for 900 anytime minutes, and up from there.
you basically take any current cingular plan and add $20 for the unlimited data and text messaging

Ryan argued wonderfully the reason one stands in line for events like this. If I'd had six hundred dollars, I'd have been there, too. I was there on opening night for all of the recent Star Wars prequels; I'll be in line in July for the final Harry Potter novel, even though I won't actually have time to read the book until after I graduate, sometime in August. It's an event. No, I don't NEED to be there, but if I have to explain it, you probably don't really want to hear it anyway.
I've only ever had AT&T/Cingular/AT&T service and therefore have nothing to compare it to, but I've never had a single complaint with coverage, price, or service.
I spent two hundred bucks on a smartphone last November, and it has slowly become a major part of my life. The iPhone, if it works as smoothly with a Macintosh as other Apple things do, would do all that and better (don't get me started on Windows Mobile).
Technology changes things. Of course it's kinda dumb, when you think about it, to think about song capacity on a telephone, and why in the world did we ever think a CAMERA was the perfect function for a telephone? None of it makes sense, except that it does. I've put complicated assignments, complete with drawings, on my classroom whiteboard and seen ten students whip out their phones or digicams in order to get a photo. Like a LOT of technology, cellular phones today are coming up with function before we've figured out what the heck the function can be best used for. But put that function in the hands of people who are creative and thoughtful (or under the age of seventeen), and you'll SEE what the heck you need a camera on your telephone for. This in turn shapes what the next generation of technology might look like.
It's nearly killing me that in this case, I am the target market for the iPhone in all ways but one: I just can't afford that kind of money for a phone, especially so soon after I just got a phone.
Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go play with my one-year-old Gamecube.

Scrivener, I'd buy you an iPhone if I could. Anyone who's using a Blackjack deserves relief! :p And really, I do agree that I think this thing is aimed square at someone like you.
Because these things are not as hard to get as a Wii, I'd strongly suggest everyone short of Apple haters go down to an Apple Store to play with one. Even if you never, ever get one, I honestly think that just swooping around the interface will make you realize what the iPhone means for everyone. It may not be the perfect device, but the UI -- like the UI on Apple computers and on the iPod -- stands to reconfigure a whole lot more than phones.
But, specifically for the skeptics and those on the fence, here is my list of iPhone annoyances as of Day 2. Just so you know I can be objective:
No copy and paste. Browsing the web is a joy. E-mail is sweet. SMS is slick and iChat like. But one of the tradeoffs of the dead simple navigation and text entry setup is that I can't "select" anything. I can't copy a phone number and paste it into the phone (though switching back and forth is quick enough). My Treo, by comparison, was a copy-paste machine... I did it all the time. And the Treo could "recognize" a phone number in any application and make it a "link" to dial immediately. I don't know how copy and paste would be added, but I'm hoping the phone number link thing is added in a future release.
No audio through the iPod dock connector? The iPhone uses the same doc connector as 5G iPods, so it charges and connects with the cable I already had wound around my desk. Charges in the car, too. But! I use a Monster iCarPlay FM adapter on the road, and yesterday I discovered (I think) that audio only comes out either the speakers or the 1/8" headphone jack. Maybe there's an iPhone-specific accessory coming? Otherwise, I'll have to get an FM transmitter that uses the headphone jack. The upside of the iPhone's setup is... hey, built-in speakers for your iPod. I never thought I'd see the day.
Limited BlueTooth. As far as I can tell, this thing pairs with headsets, and that's it. And not even stereo headsets. Where's the BT file transfer? Or, as Buzz asks, the BT keyboard link (my keyboard and mouse at home are wireless)? Hopefully, again, functionality will be added later based on demand. One thing about a phone that runs what's basically a computer OS? That syncs with machines with ease? It'd be easy for Apple to update everyone's iPhone. I even bet we'll see iPhone 1.1 within a week.
No audio or video recording. The audio I'm fine with, because there are services like Jott to record audio notes and if I was collecting stuff to broadcast/publish later, I'd just use my Edirol. As for video? This is kind of a head smacker, since I'd wager most folks don't do video with their current phones. And the quality I got off my Treo 700p was so bad, I might as well not have recorded it at all. But for all the elegance that went into designing this thing, especially since it's otherwise a fantastic multimedia platform... it seems an odd ommision. Not sure if this could be done as a software update, either. There are other things I see gripes about. A long wait for activation by AT&T (I only got the ability to receive calls at my existing number this morning)? Well, I expected a bottleneck with 300,000 of these things showing up on various systems in one weekend. Slow EDGE? Like I said, compared to the data plan on my Treo, it's fine. And since it runs on WiFi? Frankly, it's zippy most of the time... since at home and at work I'm bathed in WiFi signals! Ringtones? I've never been much of a ringtone guy, going silent 90 percent of the time anyway. And besides, just like the distinctive "Treo ring," I expect I'll use the default "Marimba" (which Steve Jobs used in his demos) so, you know, people know it's an iPhone.
Any one of these things may be deal breakers for you. They might have been for me if I knew about them before I bought one. But I say again, just try one. You'll be surprised at how smart Apple was at "trade offs" to make for an overall fantastic user experience.

Some of us have open-minds about it and want it to succeed. Performas, iMacs, Powerbooks, MacBooks, iPods and Airports--I don't think I've met an apple product that I didn't buy.
Join the club. However, I passed on the Newton, the Performa-based MacTV, the Power Mac G4 Cube, the first two generations of iPods, the first two generations of iBooks and several other Apple products. In addition, I've yet to purchase an AppleTV or the latest AirPort Extreme. :p
I'm currently "on the fence" when it comes to the current iPhone. Although I've downloaded and perused the iPhone User's Manual (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iPhone_User_Guide.pdf) and played with a couple of iPhones for an hour at an AT&T store, I'm not impressed enough to purchase one right now, since my iTunes-compatible Motorola RAZR v3i has served me well for the past year. While the Motorola interface is a little clunky, I'd miss the couple of dozen or so Java-based games that I have stored on it, the voice recognition dialing, the removable battery, the removable memory, and the ability to transfer files using Bluetooth.
However, if Apple comes out with a 12" MacBook Pro or a "touchscreen" iPod, I'll probably buy it on the first day that it's available. ;)

Ah, what about a USB connected keyboard?
As for Bluetooth, perhaps downloaded patches to "recognize" various keyboards, etc, would do it.
I'd wager we'll see a wide variety of peripheral devices geared toward this device popping up.
When online, can one "download" files such as PDFs? Can one send email with attachments?

I'm one of the few that will not buy a cell phone of any type. I don't like being bothered or the additional cost associated with monthly bills. That said, I am happy for Ryan and all others who braved the first day lines and bought the iPhone. One thing I am looking forward to is Apple migrating some of the cool iPhone features into the next generation of iPod players. Widescreen iPods anyone?

Okay so no built in audio, no video, limited bluetooth, cannot download iTunees directly, cannot dock and provide audio...and all wondering if there's a third party or software upgrade to allow for it among other wanted features not found in this model.
This is the reason why I'll wait for the second-generation iPhone that will undoubtedly come with most of the above mentioned features and at a cost much lower than what is currently available.
And you know what? The 2nd-generation iPhone will probably be smaller, lighter, cheaper and more powerful. Those who bought the iPhone just paid for the R&D plus helped financed the next generation iPhone for those who were willing to wait.
Okay it's a luxury item and for those who have an extra $600 bucks laying around this is your justification...
What would I do with an extra $600? Smart people make their money work for them by investing it. Throw it in your investment portfolio and buy shares of Apple instead of an Apple product. Make yourself rich not Apple.
Generous people can donate $600 and feel really good about it plus take the charity write-off and get most of it back in their taxes then really feel good about making their money work.
$600 is a principal payment on a car loan or even a credit card balance.
$600 can go a lot farther than a splurge on an expensive albeit limited cell phone. And that's basically what it is.
I'll wait for the next model.

And the 3rd generation will be even better and cheaper, and the 4th generation even better and cheaper than that, and the 5th generation...
I have a good friend who has wanted badly to buy an iPod for two years now. And continues to wait, because the next one is always "just around the corner." I'm sure she's right, and she'll get the perfect deal eventually, but... so far she's been an iPod-less iPod lover since 2005. Same thing happens with computers, and cars... at some point, you gotta jump.
Some folks are early adopters. Some wait and see. Everyone can rationalize their reasons. I for one am happy using my iPhone today, rather than wondering if and when I'll get one later. :)

And some are happy waiting knowing other's have paved the way for a better product down the road.
Your friend obviously doesn't have a need or a great want for an iPod so that's why she can wait.
I agree that all future generations will be better in all areas, but for most it comes down to wants or needs and for the most part, those who need it can't get the features they want.
Those who want it could care less because there isn't a need for those functions that are noticably missing from this current model.
When I shop for a product, the first question I ask is, "Do I need this or do I actually just want it". If it's a need, then it's a no-brainer and it's purchased. If it's a want, then I ask myself what could $600 do otherwise?
Typically most items I buy now qualify as "Needs" and those items I buy as "Wants" simply make me feel foolish and guilty that I didn't spend my money wisely.
When I considered the Treo 700WX I thought the price was a bit high but I needed integration with Windows Outlook as well as be able to edit and send MS Office documents. Having a PDA (Palm 7x) and a Cell Phone (Razr) that didn't integrate with each other made for one bulky day carrying around two items. The integrated Windows Media Player was a bonus that I rarely use but the integration with Outlook has made this an invaluable tool especially since I can directly reach my contacts via email or by phone without having to switch between tools.
As mentioned before regarding the integration of a camera in a phone. At first I thought it was a silly idea, but have since found the option a valuable tool in evidence gathering.
I used to carry around a cheap disposable camera in all of my cars. If I got involved in an accident where the fault was questionable, I'd start snapping pictures of the damage to either car. When my boy hit a parked AUDI with his Geo Prizm, I told him to start taking pictures with his cell phone and document the damage. Instead of waiting for him to come home, he sent the images directly to my email and I was able to view the damage within minutes half way across the Big Island.
Cameras on cell phones have proved to be invaluable and I'm glad that guy who jury-rigged his cell phone with a camera so his family could see his newborn baby at the hospital was inspired to do so.

Anyway. For those genuinely curious about the iPhone, I thought you might be interested in the image quality of the 2 megapixel camera built into it.
As you know, I love to post photos from my phone, which was previously a Treo 700p. It had a common, and unimpressive, VGA sensor. While the iPhone will similarly not make you the next Ansel Adams, I have to admit, so far I'm impressed.

As you can imagine, the shutter is slow and low light means plenty of noise. But compared to my Treo, it's like night and day. (Just go back a bit in my Flickr archives for comparisons.) The iPhone doesn't try to do too much, but for what Apple chose for it to do, it seems to do each task well. A really nice touch? The iPhone can tell if I'm holding it in portrait or landscape mode, and saves/uploads accordingly. In a way, it almost doubles the possibilities I had with mobile photo taking. I'm happy.

That's pretty good resolution for 2-Megapixels. And so is the cropping.
I have a feeling I too will own an iPhone one day but for now I'm still getting used to my Treo and it's confusing interfaces. Treo's are definately not user freindly, at least the 700WX that is.

This actually surprises me Pz. I saw the demo where the Jobs-clone (Mr. iPhone?), demo'd being able to click (err.. touch) on a phone number in an email and it would dial automatically. The iPhone doesn't recognize telephone numbers (and email addresses?) in webpages? I know the google maps demo also showed the phone number listings in the results were clickable (err... touchable?) and dialed automatically.
I was a fool to wait at an AT&T store. I waited at the Waipahu one where there were about 40ish people in line. Ran out at around 30 or so. Then I compounded my mistake and ordered from them so I've got around 5 more days to get my iPhone.
But that's a good thing. I wanted to have the box and check out reviews and such for a few days before deciding if I wanted to go through the activation. If I got my grubby paws on it on Friday, I don't think I'd have the willpower to keep it boxed.

I just got back from the Ala Moana Apple Store, and they are completely sold out of iPhones. Last night when I went there at around 7PM, they only had 8 4GB models in stock. Yet Apple's online "iPhone availability" checker says that Ala Moana still had em in stock...grrr.
This is both good and bad, because I went there to buy me an 8-gigger, but i really don't need an iPhone (especially since 10 months ago I wasted money on that overrated piece of garbage known as the LG Chocolate phone...and even worse, I still have 11 months left on my Verizon contract)...But I really do "want" one!
I justify buying one of these ridiculous monstrosities because I'm a Macintosh "Power User". Just having the ability to bidirectionally sync my calendars and address book with my Mac is well worth the price of the iPhone, in my opinion. BitPIM is such a pain in the ass, and I'll be glad to never have to use that POS hack ever again.
The thing *is* really slow as far as internet browsing is concerned, though. I'm not sure if the demo units at Ala Moana were connected to the EDGE network or if it was through WiFi, but in any case, the performance was really disappointing.

This actually surprises me Pz.Not surprisingly, I misspoke! Phone numbers in e-mail (at least in a Gmail message I just tested) do become hyperlinks that get passed to the phone. I also see phone numbers on web pages become links, and holding down my finger on them pops up a bubble with the number in it, but so far I haven't gotten it to dial. I may have to go way overboard and read the manual...
Still no cut and paste, though, since there's no highlighting or a clipboard for that matter.I just got back from the Ala Moana Apple Store, and they are completely sold out of iPhones.Bummer about them being sold out. I guessed that stock would last through the 4th. Yes, the availability indicator is only updated overnight, and it applies only to Apple Stores. Any reports on Kahala? How about neighborhood AT&T stores? From what I've read, AT&T stores got only small batches -- maybe 20-30 iPhones per store -- so I'm guessing they're sold out too. But I wonder if you could find an out-of-the-way retail outlet that has a handful waiting to be bought.

i read some really good info on updates that are coming soon to iPhone from a guy with very credible sources. here's his post and there is also a word of MS Exchange with full ActiveSync compatibility...
I met with my buddy from Apple for Coffee today, I told him I loved the interface, and all the great subtle little features it has that makes it so easy to use. I then told him I really, wanted a File System Access so I could store files, download images from the web, and generally carry around data, not just load it up from iTunes..
He said Apple IS absolutely BUILDING this, and it will come in a software update no later than when Leopard ships in two months (there will be updates before this)
Here is what he said:
There will be a build in file browser like the new finder in leopard for sorting through files
There will be a disk mode
The reason that there currently isn't a file browser + way to save files from web is because there isn't a file browser on the phone, and they wanted to release the same one that's gonna be in the upcoming leopard OS, complete with coverflow.
There will even be a special version of "iWork" so you can show your keynote presentations
So anyway a FULL file browser is coming so you can browse just like windows mobile explorer only in the cool way leopard's file browser is
Full spotlight like search is coming too
Widescreen keyboard support will be coming in every app, not just safari
Copy & Paste, Select Text is coming too (clipboard)
Also mail will see an upgrade so you can add accounts without doing so through itunes.
Most of the delays in this is because iTunes is the App Windows & Mac users are familar with for iTunes, so Apple didn't want to do a bad interface that had a file browser hacked into iTunes.
When Leopard FINAL release comes out, plugging in the iPhone will pop open a special window in the finder that has areas for dragging all your files like a file explorer only more advanced and designed specifically for the iPhone, it will make sure that it works so iTunes knows how much space is for data, and how much is for "iTunes" stuff.
Apple will be putting iChat on the phone, very, very soon, before Leopard.
Real Applications are coming to the phone shortly.
These are all updates that will be software based for the iPhone you already have, so give it a little bit of time. In the meantime enjoy the features it already has.
Oh and also there will be Photo Sharing, just like in iPhoto how you can check an option to let other people on the network view your photos.
He said .Mac account would eventually sync your accounts to the .Mac server as well from the phone, and so forth.
Simplified File sharing when on WIFI networks through bonjour (auto ip discovery) is coming, so once the file system software is up, your buddy in the same room will be able to navigate to his file browser > Network, and grab a file off your phone that you are sharing.
Ringtones will be coming very, very soon.
The Camera Software will get upgraded soon to have stabilization (software based)
Flash is coming eventually, it's just a matter of handling it in a way so when i page has dozens of flash apps running at the same time the page doesn't slow to a crawl, so they have to take the Adobe flash and make some customizations, including for security.
Anyway, enjoy the great mobile phone for now, and look forward to all the great stuff coming really, really soon. I can't WAIT for the new file browser so I can store stuff on this device!!
Just remember Windows Mobile has been out or a long time, even everytime a new WM phone comes out all the apps that are supposed to work, have to be tweaked or don't fit on the screen or some bullcrap, so realize this is just Apple's very first OS release for mobile Phone. Apple has lots of treats instore for all of you.

What would I do with an extra $600? Smart people make their money work for them by investing it. Throw it in your investment portfolio and buy shares of Apple instead of an Apple product. Make yourself rich not Apple.
Smart folks will probably short Apple stock for a few days and purchase stock in AT&T. ;)

This morning on the radio they were mentioning a story about some older guy who cut in line straight to the front door at the Ala Moana store and got his phone, pissing off a bunch of people. Any confirmation on that?
Apparently quite a few folks took maximum advantage of the long wait in line and bought TWO phones that day, the per-person purchase limit set nationwide by Apple.
That super-sized iPhone countdown prop they have displayed at the storefront is pretty cool. It'd be neat to connect/modify the LCD display with a TV tuner and mount it landscape orientation on the wall as one VERY cool iPhone-looking flat screen TV.
PZ, those photos are pretty darned good for a camera phone. Sharp and detailed with bright vivid colors. Makes ithe iPhone the perfect "Swiss Army Knife" for bloggers.

Nope....I'm with cingular/ATT but won't be buying one for a couple of years, or five or six, LOL. I am so stubborn about learning how to use technical things that until I learn how to do everything my Nokia does, ain't spending mroe money and I hear that thing is a lot. Of course there'll be newer versions of it, so let them get any bugs out, and uh.....yeah, I'm making excuses, LOL.....I am pitiful. I've never taken one picture with my current phone, have never sent email, or used the FM radio feature, yada yada.

That's what I meant. But didn't someone here say the carport couldn't send audio out?As usual, I may have misunderstood. I've gotten sound to come out of the iPhone dock connector with the newest Griffin iTrip, but not with my older Monster iCarPlay. So, you're going to want to pay attention to reports as to whether an accessory is iPhone compatible or not (new accessories coming out will have a special logo on the box).
An interesting twist, though? The iPhone is an iPod and a cell phone. Ever put your cell phone next to an FM device? Yep. Noise city. What's cool is, the iPhone knew that I plugged in a non-iPhone accessory (the iTrip), and offered to switch the phone off (Airplane Mode) for the duration of FM-based rocking.
I'm thinking, though, I'm eventually going to have to just bite the bullet and go line-in with my car stereo.
Any confirmation on that?I wouldn't doubt it. But for the most part, Apple lines are full of fantastic, friendly people. Apple came by to give out water several times, and a cart full of Starbucks iced tea as well. William Sonoma passed out brownie samples. People traded PSP games and iPod ear buds and stories. And, Ala Moana security and management was on the ball for the most part. Someone tried to jump in the line where there was a gap crossing the mall walk path a few people ahead of me, and they were quickly bounced out.Apparently quite a few folks took maximum advantage of the long wait in line and bought TWO phones that day, the per-person purchase limit set nationwide by Apple.I almost did, figuring I could probably find an interested buyer eventually... even for the list price, I could do a favor for a friend. Several of us were tracking iPhone launches on the East Coast and then West Coast to see what the demand was like. Turned out most stores had excess inventory after the lines dissipated, and I decided I didn't need the airline miles that much.
That super-sized iPhone countdown prop they have displayed at the storefront is pretty cool.Indeed. I liked all the iPhone goodies. I asked about the "June 29" staff shirts and the posters inside, but the Apple employees were very clear how carefully Apple protects that stuff.
PZ, those photos are pretty darned good for a camera phone. Sharp and detailed with bright vivid colors. Makes ithe iPhone the perfect "Swiss Army Knife" for bloggers. My thoughts exactly... save for the lack of audio and video recording. I like the camera a lot. Especially since the iPhone can tell if I was taking a portrait or landscape shot. Oh, I mentioned that already. Still, that rocks.I knew as an initial "1st gen' skeptic", I'd be eating my words.I'm an Apple fanboy, but I gotta say, this thing feels pretty refined for v1.0. I mean, especially the phone features and interface. It's the first phone Apple has taken a crack at, and it has features and thoughtful touches that feel like they've been in the biz for years.I gotta ask. Ryan, are you checking HT with your iPhone?Of course! Even though the iPhone supports the "real" internet, though, I find I gravitate toward mobile (http://m.hawaiithreads.com)-optimized (http://m.gmail.com) sites (http://m.facebook.com) whenever (http://m.twitter.com) I can anyway. It's just more efficient that way.

Very nice. Of course, if I got that, my car's audio deck would be worth more than the entire vehicle! I'm pretty sure my current deck, which already plays MP3 CDs (the reason I bought it), has a line-in somewhere. I just have to figure out how to use it.
Looks like the iPhone, in the short term, has been good news for Apple (http://finance.google.com/finance?q=AAPL), financially. At least one analyst estimates that half a million of 'em (http://blogs.zdnet.com/ip-telephony/?p=1967) have sold so far.
If you want a very thorough review of the iPhone, pluses and minuses, check out this write-up at AppleInsider (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/07/02/apples_iphone_an_initial_but_in_depth_review.html) .

I just finished playing with one and recorded pictures and video of it with my camera. As soon as I find a computer with an SD card, I'll post it up.
The iPhone itself is fun and gets some getting used to for a gadget freak like me because of the lack of a keypad. One flaw I see, is that when I rotate the phone while viewing a website, it won't rotate it no matter how much shaking I do.
Although I think I'm keen on getting he Canon SD750 camera that is next to me rather than the iPhone.

My wife bought me an iPhone for my birthday - what a woman!
I walked into the Ala Moana store Friday night around 8:30 PM and walked out with it 5 mnutes later. I didn't even think I'd get close to the store.
But...when I got home, I found my OS was not compatible and had to upgrade (from OSX 10.3.9 to 10.4.6.). So I had to go back to get the disk the next day. I wish they would have asked/told me.
Then it took about 8 hours for AT&T to activate.
Since then, it's been a joy. One of the things I love about it is that it powers itself down when not in use and back up when a call or text comes in. I don't have to turn it off.
I love that it gives me HawaiiThreads.com (and other websites) and easily zooms in and out. Two taps zooms in on readable bites of text, or I can move two fingers apart or together to zoom in or out.
I was standing in a HUGE line today (July 4) at Regal Dole for popcorn and spent the time reading the Internet Movie Database about goofs in Live Free or Die Hard (i.e. bullet holes disappearing and reappearing in windshield, etc). Then I saw many of them while the movie rolled.
Great feature: My phone contacts (and any other list in the iPhone) scrolls with the slide of a finger. My old phone required a button to be pressed. Repeatedly. Over and over.
A slide of the finger also scrolls through pictures in the library.
I love that it turns a web site or picture on its side when you turn the iPhone 90 degrees.
Downside: I have not figured out how to send email yet. Still getting error message. It also won't download email from a POP3 server (Roadrunner) if my computer has already downloaded it - first come first served.
I thought I could read it on both. Wrong.
Still, it's the coolest thing I've ever owned. It's the best phone interface I've ever seen. It's the most user-friendly tool I own.
Apple has definately raised the tech bar and soon everything we own will benefit from what they've done with this one device.

Bob, it's possible to show POP email on 2 different systems. i use my iphone to get both my IMAP and POP3 accounts, and my POP3 mail resides on my computer and iphone. there is a option on you pop3 setup to "leave mail on server" or something to that effect.
as for sending you just need to setup the correct settings for your SMTP server, if you sync'd it from iTunes to sync your email accounts and you can't send, that's interesting. maybe try change the port on the SMTP on your computer email account then sync again and make sure it changed it.

Congratulations, Bob! And LocalMotion's got it. Your "downside" is a headache that comes with any e-mail client configuration. Your best bet is to upgrade to an IMAP service, where message status is actually synced. Otherwise, yes, make sure all devices accessing your POP account leave the mail in the inbox -- the only downside is, whichever downloads 'second' will see a 'read' message rather than a 'new' one.
I've got my iPhone downloading two IMAP accounts, Yahoo! Mail (which has a special deal with Apple, and thus works the fastest -- it's basically "push" e-mail), and Gmail. Gmail, oddly, is the least satisfying experience... I get all mail, rather than what's in my Inbox only (sans labels/filters).

Hey Pz, is that with the "recent:" prefix? I've got Gmail POP download on my 8525 and with recent:account@gmail.com as the address, I get only the stuff that's new in my inbox. I also reset the POP sync in Gmail from time to time. Under Settings>Forwarding and POP, I click on "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on". With that and recent:, I usually only get the new stuff.
Of course, I haven't paid attention to my filtered mail though and whether or not those new mail that get sent to archive but still labeled new arrive on my mobile.
I <3 Gmail's conversation threading but when downloading into a client, getting all my replies is annoying.

i didn't think twice about it until i held one yesterday. now i want one reeeeeeally. bad. That's the thing about this device. For all the hype and coverage, for all the detailed walkthroughs and demos you can see online, the tactile experience really blows your mind. It feels and works like you imagined it would, but presumed couldn't actually be done without some Hollywood special effects. And yes, this thing is a lot thinner than I expected. The official dimensions as posted in advance were always correct, but holding it makes a big difference. My Treo 700p feels like a bloated old calculator now!
Hey Pz, is that with the "recent:" prefix? Check your GMail settings. I've got mine set so that when I retrieve the mail via POP3, it archives the messages. And it's also set so that POP3 only retrieves non-archived messages.True, true. There are various tricks I should use (never saw the "recent:" one, though), but... really, the brilliance of Gmail's web interface is what I'm after, not a POP kludge. At my computer, Mac or PC, I always have Gmail open (so I don't want a POP client archiving anything while I'm not looking!). I've started to just hit the m.gmail.com (http://m.gmail.com) lightweight interface so I can have Gmail behave the way I want it to, even on the iPhone.
Great ending!! i love it. so was that one of the news reporters that bought one too?Yep, looks like Tanya Joaquin picked up an iPhone during KHON's iPhone coverage. Wonder if that affected the objectivity of her coverage? Heh.
Hey Ryan, how are you converting your life from treo to iphone? What was your calendar/todo/memo/address software (meaning, did you use palm desktop or entourage conduit to sync phone to computer) and what did you do to import into your iphone?I'm a Mac guy, so to use the Treo, I used Missing Sync (http://www.markspace.com/) from Markspace so that my contacts went to Apple's Address Book, my events and tasks went to Apple's iCal, etc. All this stuff also got backed up to my 30GB video iPod, so boy was I covered. ANyway, with everything already in the Mac's default applications, I got everything over to the iPhone the first time I plugged it in! It was so seamless, it was scary.
The only oddities are (1.) no 'tasks' application on the iPhone, which seems like such a major ommision I can only imagine it's coming later, perhaps with Leopard, and (2.) events added on the iPhone can only be added/synced with one calendar in iCal -- the categorization/colorcoding so far isn't there. This too, I imagine, could be rectified via updates.
Yesterday at Aoki's in Haleiwa, a surfer in line asked to play with my iPhone. Even over EDGE, even way the heck out there, a YouTube video loaded relatively quickly. He was duly impressed and added it to his shopping list. :D

I gotta take my mentioning of the recent prefix back. iPhone won't let you add in a ":" in the address field. However, it does have a recent mode in the settings and it seems to be the same thing.
As for task lists, until Apple adds that functionality in, I'm trying out Listingly (http://www.listingly.com). They already created an interface for the iPhone but I haven't tried it over the Edge network.

Picked one up on opening day and it is indeed awesome! I had been using an old-school Treo 600, so it was time to upgrade.
The only problem I have is that I wanted to port my Hawaii number to the new iPhone, but was told by iTunes upon activation that it was ineligible for porting. But after I activated under a 323 area-code, I called and found out there was a convoluted way to make it happen. So I'm waiting for AT&T to mail me a new SIM card so that I can then port the number.
But it is a headache I'll gladly put up with for the next couple of days.

Some might be interested in this blog (http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=588) that discusses the iPhone and DRM.
I've had a completely different take on it. When you cross and iPod with a wireless device, it seems a natural that you'd set up a subscription music service. Access anything in the tunes store on demand for a extra $x a month. Phones have traditionally been rather high on DRM. This really locks down the music and offers artists "pay per play" type of payment. Much to my surprise, the music companies seem to have been pushing Apple in this direction (subscription based), but Apple doesn't want to play.
On another note, it could also spell bad things for broadcast radio stations since it would seem a "live" podcast would be possible. Any station anywhere in the world can be heard when you are in range of WiFi or AT&T. It may even allow customization so that you can select your own deejay talk, a news stream and music from different sources to make your own personal podcast.
It's entirely possible that the iPhone will signal new life to DRM - and bad things for consumers.

OK, add me to the list of people who drank the Kool Aid. I went into Apple Store, picked up the phone, clicked on one web site and I was sold. I begged them to sell me one. No dice. None to be had.
Hit Craigslist. Connected on the second ad that I responded to. Paid a little bit over what they sold for in the store, but I considered it a reasonable finder's fee for the convenience of the purchase. The guy I bought from stood in line at AT&T from 8 a.m. on June 29 to get his two phones. And he had one available, Apple did not.
Boo hoo. Woo hoo! I got a phone!
Took it home, plugged it in, registered and validated with Apple in about 3 minutes. Got email from Apple a minute later saying thanks...
And here it is 3 hours later and AT&T hasn't activated the phone yet. Ignoble beginning of the story.

It's entirely possible that the iPhone will signal new life to DRM - and bad things for consumers.
I thought the thing would work like an iPod, where if you synch it with iTunes you can just download the tracks you already have on your computer to your iPhone, including those MP3 and AAC ones that you rip from your own CDs.
Plus Apple is trying to go the non-DRM route by selling certain songs in a non DRM format.
On another note, some of this iPhone technology is bound to trickle down to iPods that may be released later this year.... and a newer, cheaper iPhone may be coming (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070709/tc_nm/apple_nanophone_dc_4;_ylt=Aj1gW6KRhQbVbMvO9d0p0QQE 1vAI) in a few months:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL - news) plans to launch a cheaper version of the iPhone in the fourth quarter that could be based on the ultra-slim iPod Nano music player, according to a JP Morgan report.
Kevin Chang, a JP Morgan analyst based in Taiwan, cited people in the supply channel he did not name and an application with the U.S Patent and Trademark office for his report dated July 8.
Apple filed a patent application document dated July 5 that refers to a multifunctional handheld device with a circular touch pad control, similar to the Nano's scroll wheel.
Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris declined comment.
Nano like iPhone may sell for around $300. This is only an early, speculative report.
I looked at one of these at the Apple Store tonight. The OSX interface seems be an "At Ease (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_Ease)" like front end to the OS... an old Mac Performa user might remember Apple's "At Ease" front end. Of course the iPhone implementation of OSX is beautiful and simple.

Pretty much everything I like about the iPhone comes from Apple's engineers and designers. Pretty much everything that annoys me about it comes from AT&T.
I love David Pogue's videos for the iPhone. His pre-launch review was hilarious, but his musical even more entertaining. Hard to believe he works for the Gray Lady.
I doubt there'll be a Nano iPhone. Or if there is, how compelling it'd be. The iPhone as it is, form factor wise, hits the tightest balance of screen size versus UI. Something the size of the Nano? I can't help imagining a tiny rotary dial on the thing, like those classic telephones.
Over a week into iPhone life, and I don't miss my Treo at all. I finally disconnected the Treo dock from my computer. The next step will be to pack it away!

Much to my surprise, the music companies seem to have been pushing Apple in this direction (subscription based), but Apple doesn't want to play.
It's entirely possible that the iPhone will signal new life to DRM - and bad things for consumers.
I hadn't even considered this, but now that I think about it, I think I'm confused. I bought a Samsung BlackJack last November. Cingular had some kind of agreement with eMusic.com (a few extra bucks per month, as you say, bought you something). I'm already an eMusic.com subscriber, so I didn't pay much attention to it, especially since at the time, I had a 40GB iPod and didn't need the phone for listening.
eMusic.com sells DRM-free MP3 downloads. With AT&T holding hands with Apple now, what happens to AT&T's relationship with eMusic.com?
MonkeyMan, I imagine your iPhone is activated now? Mine took three days, since I bought it on day one and was part of the surge that nearly brought down AT&T's system. I was also transferring my number, which complicates things.
Ryan, did you switch over all your services, including whoever you were paying for your EVDO service?

Yeah, in my case I was already a Cingular customer and was switching my phone number to the new phone. I also had to add the data plan to my existing account.
It took them 9 1/2 hours to activate the phone. Once it started working, I hit my Airport hub with it (Graphite 802.11b) and hit one web page. Thrilled! Then it couldn't find any more pages.
Camera only came up with a black screen.
Restarted many times trying to get it to cooperate. Nothing.
Just got back from the Genius Bar and I'm drunk with Apple Goodness. They looked at it, fiddled a while, then reached under the counter and gave me a new one. Programmed it up with my old number and my old sim chip and away I went.
Camera works now, but it still doesn't like my Airport. I might fiddle with the Airport DNS settings and stuff.
But I'm not complaining! I like it!
(By the way Ala Moana has phones in stock this evening! Hurry on down!)

I hadn't even considered this, but now that I think about it, I think I'm confused.
The winds of change are blowing. Right now I'm not sure where they will lead. But I do think the possibilities are there for both better service but greater DRM as well.
However, if I can get my music anywhere I am (on foot, in the car, home stereo), without having to store it, then maybe I don't care about DRM. I doono. The problem there is a favorite song or group could vanish if they run afoul of the powers that be in the new music empire.

I have not and don't intend to buy an iPhone but just a heads up for those who haven't and are too cheap to buy one. There is a chance to win a free iPhone from Clear Channel Radio by submitting your name for the iPhone giveaway per day drawing at Hawaii's Clear Channel radio station websites. I know KSSK and KHVH are participating in this contest sponsored by Bank of Hawaii.
KSSK (http://www.ksskradio.com/)
KHVH (http://khvh830am.com/)
I am sure the other Hawaii Clear Channel stations have the same promotion.
Winners of the iPhone get only the iPhone and must sign up and pay for the cell service separately.

I've been a dedicated Verizon Wireless customer since the mid 80's when cell service was still a "what's that in your car" kind of technology. So I'll have to wait until the iPhone partners up with them...if they ever do.
The good thing is that by then the iPhone will be up to the iPhone G5 version by then:D with all the bugs worked out, smaller form factor, brighter screen, more power, lighter weight, more features, better integration...you know the standard MAC future generation blah blah blah. Oh and cheaper to boot!
I'm in no rush but am still in want of one.:)

So have I. But I've been rather ticked that they pulled the local Sprint network from their PRLs. I like having a backup.
In the meantime Sprint, which used to be the "digital or nothing" provider, has added Verizon to their PRLs. The two companies have swapped places.

iPhone users drowning in details (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2007/Aug/15/bz/hawaii708150400.html)

USA Today
LOS ANGELES — Early adopters of Apple's iPhone are getting their first service bills from AT&T — and some customers say they are so detailed they belong in libraries.
Justine Ezarik, a Pittsburgh graphic designer and active Internet blogger, got her first bill Saturday. She says it was so huge — 300 pages — it was delivered in a box. AT&T detailed every text message and Internet use for her billing. "This is so silly," Ezarik told USA Today. "There's no reason they need to send you this much information."

Not sure if anyone mentioned this before, but here's an iPhone knock-off called the MiniOne by Meizu (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/like-the-iphone/meizu-minione-specs-revealed-its-actually-got-some-juice-261388.php), aka M8 (http://www.negrielectronics.com/product_info.php?currency=USD&products_id=228) of China.. where else?! It's based on Windows CE6.0 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_CE).
Which brings to mind eMachines attempt to dupe the original iMac with their eONe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EOne), which didn't get very far in the market.

yeah and if they would have left out the details people would be complaining about that...
but i do find it funny that AT&T would spend all that extra money to send those bills out. they will probably make you opt to recieve your details online and just send you a basic bill in the future.

I'm Glad I didn't decide to buy it, beides, I would have to switch back to
AT & T (who droped me like a hot potato to the cingular company).
That's why I switched to TMobile with my hubby's phone company, atleast we are not charged at all calling mobile to mobile.
(actually you can do that with any company - calling mobile to mobile)

I'm not surprised at all. The iPhone is an amazing piece of technology and I understand the "ga-ga" factor! But, it isn't for everyone...like me for example. All I need to do with a cell phone is make and receive a call. The iPhone would be a waste of money for me. Would I like one? You bet! It's very cool but it makes absolutely no financial sense within the context of my lifestyle. BTW, the iPhone is almost too new to have "personlly never had it"! ;)

Ha! Check this out...
N.J. Teen Unlocks Apple's iPhone (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,294437,00.html)
NEW YORK — Friday was not a good day for AT&T Wireless.
Best documented was a hack by George Hotz, 17, of Glen Rock, N.J.
With a little soldering, a lot of command-line computing and about two hours of time, Hotz was able to switch an iPhone over to T-Mobile, which he documented in detail in a YouTube video and on his blog.
Three separate hacks that fully unlock the Apple iPhone from AT&T surfaced, two of them claiming to be software-only.
The iPhone runs on GSM networks, which only T-Mobile and AT&T Wireless run in the U.S. Sprint and Verizon Wireless use the incompatible CDMA standard.
This might make the currently available iPhones more valuable, as they note Apple could redesign future ones so this hack doesn't work.
I can just see it on eBay now..

Is this for real? The current bid on that guy's originally-hacked T-Mobile iPhone on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230164884672) is currently at $99,999,999.00!!! Is someone actually going to pay that? And the auction doesn't end until August 31!
The seller says "Soon, you will be able to buy unlocked iPhones everywhere, in fact probably before this auction ends. But this is the one that started it all. The one unlocked while the steps were posted live on the blog. This isn't just an unlocked iPhone, this is a piece of history."
Whoah, scade! :p

No. Those are most certainly hoax bids. Auctions like that last a day, usually, tops. The mainstream press attention makes it impossible to keep the jokers away.
I don't even understand what the appeal of an "unlocked" iPhone is on another carrier. A lot of the stuff that the iPhone does, as a phone, is special, and custom built to AT&T's infrastructure (including "visual voicemail"). The "phone" in your iPhone might as well be a free Razr if you're going to latch onto another carrier.
Fact of the matter is, every mobile carrier has people who hate it with every fiber of their being. If the iPhone were exclusively on Sprint, T-Mobile, whatever, people would be just as cranky about it (unless, of course, it was their carrier). All cellular phone companies suck. Ergo, it's irrelevant. It's the Apple part of the iPhone that makes it all worthwhile.

iPhone goes kaboom when it was unlocked (http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=4019)
We were so happy, all the software part was done, so we started opening the iphone. The antenna cover was a bit tricky but eventually it came off. Then we started to open the metal cover (after taking out the 3 screws) and PUFF, up it went in smoke, I think my collegue must have touched something. It literally went up in black smoke. I was so hot that when I tried to pick it up I burnt my fingers. So, this is for shure the most difficult part of the whole process. I don't know what he did, as I had just stepped out of the room to fetch something when I heard a scream...they got such a fright. I will post a photo of the iphone... To everybody out there, be carefull....

I am in the market for a smart phone and so yesterday we checked out the apple store at Kahala Mall where I was seduced by the iPhone. Oh baby! So we told the charming sales guy, Jeff, that I wanted to sleep on it. This morning I wake up to this (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/31/AR2007083101723.html)and now will wait a few days. Anyone care to speculate? What is apple up to?!!

Each time I see this thread in the 'latest' section, I consider running down to the Apple store and blowing a wad of money, but I remember that I have a family to support...and some luxuries just have to wait (for a few more months, maybe...sooner, :) ). But, after readin the article LavaGal linked, I'm excited if it'll be an iPhone Nano!
I'm confident that Apple won't disappoint.
I was thinking of starting a thread, "What YEARNS for the iPhone?" :p
But, if not the iPhone which other smart phone is recommended?
