Caught Tia Carrere's live set at Flavors of Honolulu yesterday and was quite impressed with her vocals and the choice of songs on her album. She has included some of my all-time fave Hawaiian songs. It takes guts to get up and sing with only an ukulele to back you - even if it is Daniel Ho playing it!
We bought the CD and Tia posed for a pic with me and my daughter. She was absolutely gorgeous in person and so NICE!!
She gets props from me for her return to her roots. Count me in as a new fan...

I hope she improved with age, back in the day of Brown bags to Stardom 1 & 2, I personally found Althea Althea Janairo's voice annoying. I did love her Ballroom Blitz on Wayne's World the girl can sing rock.

I gotta admit, my expectations for this release were low -- but she's very, very good. Interesting choice of songs...but all are done well, especially for a first-time release.

Auntie Maria, I match your assessment; I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised at the sweetness of her voice - this comes over as sort of a "lullaby" album, combining her nahenahe vocal style with Daniel Ho's gentle `ukulele and guitar accompaniment.

I'm not afraid to admit that I allow my hormones to influence my assessment of certain people's singing, but even my carbonated 'mones weren't enough to make me like her performance of that song. The original comes pretty close to sucking, and Tia's remake is only slightly better. Ugh.
However, these reviews have intrigued me enough to give it a listen. Are there any photos in the CD insert? :)

John Berger's review (http://starbulletin.com/2007/06/29/features/story03.html) in the Star-Bulletin has three song samples. The Bulletin also had this Q&A session (http://starbulletin.com/2007/06/29/features/story03.html) with Carrere. The write-up in the Honolulu Advertiser (http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070629/ENT0301/706290309/1130/ENT0301) includes a ten-second song sample. Of course, the great Mele.com lets you get a taste of every track (http://www.mele.com/music/artist/tia+carrere/hawaiiana+%286-19-2007%29/).

I cringed when I clicked on the youtube link, fearing that she would butcher the lyrics, but she didn't do half bad.

Would've been much more bearable if she'd looked like Tia Carrere!

Are there any photos in the CD insert? :)Yes, but mostly childhood photos. There are a couple of contemporary ones on there - I think you'd like the one behind the CD tray.

I love this CD. I have heard of Tia because she does the voice of Nani in Lilo and Stitch, and hearing her sing these songs amazes me.

Her cd ain't bad, but THIS version of Hi'ilawe reminds me of anything BUT Waipi'o valley and a poetic love story. To me...because of Ho's chord shape choice/strumming...Tia's body movements (I ain't gonna call that dancing)...too much hyper energy for Waipi'o...not to mention the singing style...it seems something more along the lines of a FLING in Hard Rock Cafe, Honolulu
I prefer this version:

not bad; not bad at all... I would have never expected such richness. I may have to consider a purchase.
