Surprisingly accurate towards the sport (art) of surfing...at least as accurate as the portrayal of surfing penguins could be. They did add a little of the 'Hollywood Poison' to the plot, but I have to remember that it's first and foremost a kids movie.
We could have done without the slow-witted, Jeff Spicoli-ish stoner chicken (and whoever voiced this tainted nugget). Spicoli 'worked' for audiences in the 1980's. There are medical doctors and other professionals doing well in their careers all over this planet...who are regular cannabis users. Somebody get me better representation.
Kelly Slater and Rob Machado have short, self starring roles in it (they make fun of Machado's hair...nice touch). The other actors did well with the humorous dialogue. I chuckled about 20 times througout the flick, despite the fact I was depressed that day before going into the theatre.
Pretty good soundtrack, with the exception of the crappy pop additions. Still worth at least a download (a legal one, people).
Overall, the film captured and dished out the 'feeling' well, and came accross as appropriately mellow. My chick now wants to learn surfing even faster, and she wants a damned penguin even more.
On a side note, a friend of a friend of mine was responsible for the penguin theft at the Hilton Waikiki a few months ago. He fed it sardines and spam, and took it for walks around the block with a cat collar and leash. It slept in a 50 gallon tank in his room. Sadly, it passed away about a month ago (which got me infuriated with the guy who took it).
Worth a second viewing, but not worth the dough to see again in theatres.
For a kids movie with my "adult" bias: 7.5
For a movie in general: 7.9
P.S. I usually dislike CG movies, with the exceptions of Final Fantasy and this one. CG films, to me, are visually plastic and baloon-y (I like seeing the slight variations in the images in frames that come from traditional hand-drawn animation).
