View Full Version : Hurricane Season 2007

Woo hoo. We've got the first named tropical storm of the season that might reach the islands -- Tropical Storm Cosme.
http://www.solar.ifa.hawaii.edu/Tropical/GifArchive/COSME-07.gif (http://www.solar.ifa.hawaii.edu/Tropical/Data/COSME-07.html)
Alvin and Barbara came and went in late May / early June without really leaving the Mexican coastline... but it looks like Cosme might be approaching the Big Island in a week or so.
Of course, it's rare that an Eastern North Pacific storm actually gets as far as the Hawaiian Islands. Both of the damaging hurricanes of the last 40 years, Iwa and Iniki, were Central North Pacific storms. But it wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out on this one anyway.

Weather could get nasty later in the week
Advertiser Staff
The remnants of the typhoon that rocked Japan isn't expected to hit the main Hawaiian Islands until Friday, and even then forecasters at the National Weather Service aren't sure how much of the storm will hit here.
(Advertiser Breaking News (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2007/Jul/16/br/br7832450916.html))WTF? The remnants of Typhoon Man-Yi are not going to swing back across the Pacific and reach all the way to Hawaiʻi by the weekend. Clearly some staffer wasnʻt paying attention and got Man-Yi confused with the up-and-coming Tropical Storm Cosme.

Glen, are you a weather junky like I am? I rode with the Hurricane Hunters back during Hurricane Iniki when I was at The Advertiser. That was soooo coool. I wish I knew more about the science of weather!

I luv following weather and trying to decipher what NOAA writes.
Like this...
".UPDATE...
THE LATEST OFFICIAL FORECAST FROM NHC FOR COSME / SIX-E PLACES THE
SYSTEM NEAR 18.0N 153.0W AT 4 AM HST SATURDAY WITH A MAXIMUM WIND
SPEED OF 30 KT. BASED ON A 75-NM-MILE RADIUS IN THE NORTH
SEMICIRCLE...THE OUTER RADIUS OF 25-KT WIND JUST BARELY ENTERS THE
SOUTHEAST CORNER OF THE GRID DOMAIN FOR THE MAIN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS...
AND THE ONLY OFFICIAL PRODUCT FROM THIS OFFICE AFFECTED AT THIS TIME
IS THE OFFSHORE FORECAST. AS THE WEEK GOES ON THOUGH...IT WOULD BE

In case we got members on the big isle and then...the rest of us on the other isles...this time, maybe...we should be aware and start prepping early enuf...looks a bit nasty!

just remember the other past hurricanes....whether it was Iwa or Iniki who changed path and aimed straight for us...mainly kauai.

It's 2:39pm HST on Friday, July 20, 2007. If you get this message within 24 hours of my posting it, look at the loop at this link (http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/satellite/Hawaii_IR_loop.gif) and see what's about to hit us.

Since I haven't refilled this season's hurricane kit with food (hangs head in shame), I hele'd on over to the ABC Store for a supply of snacks that don't require electricity. After the Canal House fiasco (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=13168&highlight=friend) I'm super-sensitive to the possibility of not having operating elevators in a high rise. Once Cosme's weather has passed I'll most certainly have a carb fest! :D

I hele'd on over to the ABC Store for a supply of snacks I won't ask which part of the labels you read first. And I won't ask if you checked where the snacks were grown or processed.
I won't.
I really won't.
:p
Rain and a few thunderstorms on the Big Island. Breezy over here on K-Bay and just a few showers. Probably damp and breezy tomorrow (Saturday) and then much nicer Sunday. This storm system is moving fast.

Labels? What labels?! The ingredients in the Li Hing Mango will probably kill me long before their origin! :D

More likely they will "preserve" you!!
Ahem, back OT, by late yesterday afternooon the wind was maybe 10 knots more than usual on Sand Island. Steady drizzle overnight in Pearl City. Pretty tame thus far.

look at the loop at this link (http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/satellite/Hawaii_IR_loop.gif) and see Okay, click on that link again now, folks. TD Cosme looks like its staying well south of the Big Island and appears to be moving due west. Shouldn't have much effect on us at all, and certainly nothing to worry about. Probably.
Unless it switches course and strengthens. An unlikely scenario, but...

it was such a hot night last night. Rain is coming/going (not steady) but the system is sucking all the good wind from here. No breeze. At. All. Ugh!

Very nice. Thanks! Any idea who put that site together? It's somewhat similar to Jamie DeMatoff's http://www.highsurfwarning.com/ but without the advertising. Jamie has the live camera connections and a few other things.

I'm not wishing for a hurricane strike or anything, but... in the case of Cosme, I wish he/she would've at least given us a good thump. Today was so warm, muggy, still, stale, I was begging for the drenching rain we were supposed to expect this weekend.

I guess it didn't reach you out on the Leeward side. We got a good drenching this afternoon in Palolo Valley.

It was nice weather for a picnic on Magic Island. The Windward side was sticky, but now after midnight it's starting to rain.

Saturday the 20th of July had it pouring really hard in Hilo and parts of Lower Puna, but nothing out of the ordinary for typical East Hawaii weather. Right now at 2:41am Sunday morning it's quiet and clear skies.

I guess it didn't reach you out on the Leeward side. We got a good drenching this afternoon in Palolo Valley.Palolo is much like Manoa. It can can totally dump rain in there, while just out the valley it will be clear and sunny. Such must have been the case yesterday. Waikiki, all the way up towards Kahala and Aina Haina's coastal region was sunny, with only scattered clouds throughout the day. It was gusty though.
This Sunday morning in Waikiki there's lots of overcast, but at least it's cool and breezy. Not muggy.
On Friday evening at one point it looked like that "calm before the storm", but it didn't turn out to be that.

Yep! Woke up to wet streets and the brownish cast to the Ala Wai canal that signals rain in the mountains. Manoa Valley looks pretty clear right now altho' there's rain at the top of the Koolaus which I guess means at least some mist in Manoa! About an hour ago I couldn't even see the valley thru the clouds. I'm watching wind patterns dance across the canal's water. It's a nice morning to be in bed with the laptop and a cup of tea! :D

Looks like it's turning out to be a sunny, semi-breezy day. Beach bound.

You're right. Although it was raining in Kahala as well when I went to the mall in the afternoon.
Today is definitely clearer, although it did rain a bit at lunchtime. Weird how it can be sunny, with very few clouds, yet still drizzling rain.
