I had lunch over my parent's house. My father said to me, "Beau, your mother and I usually have salad for lunch, would you like me to make you some?" Of course I said YES!...
Salad was fresh Manoa Lettuce with tako poke (probably leftover pupu that my father didn't finish the night before during cocktail hour! LOL) with a Vietnamese style dressing he'd made from scratch. Some look fun noodles with leftover guava wood smoked roasted chicken my father made in the Kamado. And some daikon and ogo pickled in a sanbaizu sauce that some friend had given to him. My father said, "Here Beau try some of this, I know how much you like Japanese Food." LOL...
Being a single guy, I always mavel at the wide variety of things my parents eat for lunch and dinner. Even tho I love to cook, I could never have such a large variety of food without a lot of wastage occuring (which is something I would find distasteful).

I am not a food-scab at work. Some students have a prepared lunch delivered by a local service; the chicken nuggets were from an unclaimed lunch because several students were on an off-campus excursion.
Today's lunch: I vultured the faculty potluck. Didn't have anything to bring and would have been welcome anyway, but I had work to get done during our lunch break (conferences all day today and tomorrow, no classes), so I just picked at the carcasses when I was done. Good carcasses.

My boss and I walked over to the public elementary school to buy a school lunch for lunch today. Boy was I impressed! It consisted of shredded turkey meat in a rich brown gravy with a large scoop of white rice mixed with brown rice, several slices of fresh apple, a tossed salad, a whole wheat roll and chocolate milk all for $4.00.
Not only did it taste good, but I was amazed at how nutritionally balanced it was.
With the exception of one private school I attended, most school lunches that I remembered having, SUCKED!

HAH!!! I KNEW IT!!! it's a rare one who can go to thelma's and NOT order the thelma's special and then demolish it, the way you guys did.
don't respect you? of course not! in fact, i am glad to know you are in the "lover-of-lechon-kawali" club. anyone who can go to thelma's and resist ordering the special then demolish it in the proper way you did must be from another planet and lacking human taste buds. or they're vegetarian/vegan, etc. (and there's nothing wrong with that--just means more meat in the world for me). but going to thelma's and not ordering it is rather like going to leonard's bakery and not order the malassadas--it's just WRONG!

A friend took me to lunch at Cassis today, Chef Mavro's restaurant in Harbor Court, where Palomino used to be. The restaurant is nice, the food is pretty good (I had the cassoulet), but really, the only adjective that I came away with was, "Expensive!" Most lunch items were $20-$26, basically putting the cost of a midday meal (http://www.cassishonolulu.com/lunch.html) into the "nice dinner" budget zone.
I'd eat those dishes for half the price, but the food quite simply isn't that good. At least I can now say I've been there.

What a Filipino thread back there! But I think this should be a separate thread.
I've never liked Filipino food ... and I feel guilty about that, because I think it's my fault for not trying. The first time I remember eating Filipino food was at a wedding a long, long time ago. It was extremely greasy, and cold, and inedible. It took me a long time to try it again. And it still didn't satisfy. When Golden Coin opened at the Walmart superblock, it was one of the first places I tired. I was so turned off by the service, I never went back. The only thing Filipino I ever liked was lumpia (but who doesn't like lumpia?).
I'm Okinawan, but 20%-30% of my relatives are Filipino, so I am not a stranger to this culture. I may be wrong, but I think in Hawaii, Filipino cuisine is either very good or very bad ... and I've only had the very bad.

Someone had given me a quarter of a sheep, so I froze the chops and the shoulder roast, and canned the rest simply with just a bit of salt and water.
It was a blustery day, so I made lamb and whitebean stew. I fried an onion til browned with garlic, celery, thyme and bay. Then I dumped in a jar of breast of lamb, one of whitebeans, one of cubed potatoes, and one of cubed carrots, along with a splash of Tabasco, pepper, and a spoonful of veal stockpowder, and let that all simmer for half an hour. Just before serving, I splashed in some red wine vinegar and sprinkled the whole thing with parsley, and we ate it with a fresh and crusty baguette.
Sliced tomatoes and vinaigrette for after.

Cran, Palama Kid and I were suppose to go to Maunakea Market Place for Lunch but we saw Ryan twitter he was meeting Kilinahe and Glossyp at The Mix. We changed directions in the middle of the road on King Street. I no kid you!:p
Lunch at The Mix was grand.
Roast Pork Sandwiches, Roast Turkey Sandwiches, Spicy Crab Pasta, Homemade Meat Balls Pasta, Lemonade and Berry Smoothie were on our tables. Kim gave us homemade pistachio and strawberry ice-cream to eat.
Another great day at The Mix!;)

I no kid you, too. At a red light at Dillingham / King, it was scary to see her jump out of Cran's cah; run back to my car; tell me where we going; then jump back into Cran's car.
Of course, no mo parking on Bethel. So we drive around (breaking several driving laws) and around before luckily breaking another rule to park right behind the other on Bethel Street.
Cranberee told me that her driving was all Auntie's fault. Yeah, right. Who was driving?
Almost all was good: The spicy crab salad was ono, company great, no tickets on our cars, but couldn't find small adult muumuus for Palama Mama (she's a tiny 4' 8").

My brother and his wife were with me, so we ordered above to share.
On the mainland, we don't get as much lechon as we got at Elena's & definitely not during the week. At a lot of places (like at Ong Pin in South San Francisco), it's served only on weekends & is sold out by early afternoon.

I've decided to make some fries for the game.
You've gotta try this, it's ONO!!!!
1.) Get a package is regular frozen fries. Put 'em on a tray in the convection oven and bake 'um until they are hot; not thoroughly cooked, just hot.
You really just want to heat them up to melt all the precipitated ice-moisture away to dry the outside of the fries.
2.) Heat up a pan of oil about 1/2 inch high in the empty pan. Get it nice and hot. When you've evaporated all the moisture from the fries through baking, take the fries out of the oven and put them in the hot oil.
If you didn't bake the fries long enough, you'll know it when the hot oil "spits" at you. OOUUWWIIEEE!!!!!
... and yes, you are actually cooking the fries, twice.
3.) Let the fries sizzle in the oil until they get a little golden on the edges, then remove them to drain on a layer of paper towels.
Immediately season them with a slight dash of garlic powder (go light on the G/P, too much will ruin it), and a lot of onion powder, followed bY salt (...and I find that you can be unusually generous with salt and it actually tastes great -remember the way McDonalds fries used to be?) then sprinkle with aji namoto. PAU!
I swear this tastes like the potato version of "Chicken-in-a-biscuit" crackers, AWESOME!
-------------------------------------------
Okay, so now you want to get fancy and impress your friends and neighbors.
Try this:
1.) Cook up 16 oz package of bacon. Overcook it to make it crispy to where the strips are brittle when cool, tamp the oil out and break the strips into small bits.
2.) put your seasoned fries on a large plate. Set your oven to high broil. Lay a few sheets of American cheese over the fries and put the plate in the oven for a minute, just long enough to melt the cheese.
3.) remove fries from oven and sprinkle with bacon bits. Create a hole in the center and dump s large blob of sour cream in the middle of the fries, then cover the whole thing with some chopped green onions.
OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE serves a similar dish that they call "cheese fries", but it can't hold a candle to this dish when you do it yourself. This is off-the-wall, -over the top, broke da mouth.
WARNING:
Once you do this, all other fries will never taste the same.
You'll never want to buy fries outside, again.

My coworker had the center-cut calamari salad with oriental dressing. The calamari was perfect, just tender, not rubbery, so smooth I had to doublecheck that it wasn't processed! She also had the chowder, though she said it was more a gumbo. I had the ahi belly with their signature sauce. Again, perfectly cooked, very moist but not underdone.
The dishes are in the $10-$15 range, but that's not bad for the quality and freshness of the food. We got lucky on parking but it looks like it can be a challenge (like it is for Nico's). Though there's more open space/gravel in the area! But it's a nice open layout, unlike Nico's, and thus more comfortable. The decor is appropriately fisher-like, with stock and vintage footage of fishing expedition playing on large screens.
It also looked like there was the makings of a stage or performing area in one corner. Live music, perhaps?

Definitely not a mid-morning snack... I try not to eat a mid-afternoon snack, but sometimes i give in and eat something when my will power is low... But more often than not, I do not eat an afternoon snack - I just wait until dinner time. Yes, I do get hungry, but it makes me feel like I am achieving my goal of losing weight... is that kind of a twisted way of thinking?

of course, just leftovers, when eric's the cook, means:

brown rice
can i say mmmmmmmmm? i'm pretty sure i did, several times, whilst devouring lunch!
dessert was six teaspoonfuls of ben & jerry's steven colbert's americone dream flavored ice cream (vanilla ice cream w/ribbon of caramel & broken pieces of chocolate covered waffle cone...doesn't that sound totally drool-worthy??!!). and yes, i seriously had only six teaspoonfuls...or more correctly, measured tablespoons, i suppose.

The senior citizen club's cooking contest was a success! Lunch consisted of 15 different entrees. From starches like fukujinsuke rice, hotdog/veggie rice roll, and hot/spicey fried rice, to main dishes like chili, meatloaf and chicken with an oyster sauce based gravy. Dessert was fresh mango in gelatin over cream cheese with shortbread crust, and various jello molds with fruits.
Everything was onolicious, and I'm so glad I didn't enter the contest as I was able to catch up on my paperwork!:D

we had really cheap but decent dim sum and minute chicken over cake noodle at the golden dragon restaurant in chinatown. all dim sum are either $1.69 or $1.79 each, and among our choices were pan fried turnip cake, bean curd roll, shumai, pork balls, chicken feet, tripe, shrimp dumplings and an order of minute chicken on cake noodle, all enjoyed with the requisite pot of jasmine tea.
but what made this meal memorable was that two of the restaurant staff--chinese women maybe about 40 years old--had an extremely loud argument right in the middle of the restaurant. actually, the loudness was one-sided, because only one of the women was yelling, and the other, who was tending to the sweets cart, answered back in a regular volume of voice. it was so bad that everyone in the restaurant (about 20 people total) stopped eating. finally, after about ten minutes, the other staff members convinced the yelling woman to leave the dining area. it made such an impression that people were chatting across tables, wondering aloud what the argument was about.
