A cup of really good chili poured over a large bowl of raw spinach, very little extra-sharp cheese and tablespoon of lowfat sour cream, chased with raw vinegar mixed in some Green food, healthnut type juice, yes...BURP.

Cyn, Looks so onolicious!

We ventured to Hanazen which is located outside of Walmart- Keeaumoku.

The Kitsune Udon consisted of two pieces of fried tofu which was deep fried. The soup nothing special and green onions added. $5.00

Shrimp Tempura ~ panko and crispy. Also, nothing special. Sauce tasted like watered down shoyu. $1.50

1 Order Gyoza $3.50. Small pieces (6) Tasted good. Same sauce as Tempura.

I wanted mustard or hot sauce but they didn't have any.

Other Ramen Places I go to, get mustard or some kind of hot sauce. After all, dis is Hawaii!!

Auntie Lynn

auntie, next time you are by walmart and you're ono for good ramen, try taishoken. it's across the street and mauka from walmart. reid did a write up of them here (onokinegrindz.typepad.com/ono_kine_grindz/2004/10/taishoken.html). taishoken and kyoto ramen (onokinegrindz.typepad.com/ono_kine_grindz/2004/11/yottekoya_.html)are eric and my two most favorite ramen places in town. i don't think either place has mustard tho. but they will have the japanese red spicy powder thing!

still reeling from our adventure with the cursed chicken (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showpost.php?p=164589&postcount=242), dinner last night was pad thai with garlic chicken (eric) and bun (cold rice noodles) with marinated pork and spring rolls (me). we stopped by fort street cafe last night for dinner. vince and eric used to work together at a fine dining restaurant; vince eventually left to open fort street cafe with his cute & friendly mrs. and eric left food & bev completely (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=13650). anyway, dinner was really good--we ate every bite and waddled away, groaning, "uuuuuggggghhh...fuuuuuulllll!" if you're at fort street mall between hotel and beretania, consider them for cheap, fast, homemade and tasty thai food.

There used to be some good places, but they closed years ago.) What do you think of Ezogiku? We go to their Vancouver (BC) shop when we are up that way. I went to one in Honolulu when I stopped by to visit a friend at Hawai`i Public Radio.

eric took me to dinner at ruth's chris. i'd never been there before and wanted to go.

we shared the caesar salad (http://www.ruthschris.com/menu/salads.html), which i thought was the best i've had in a long time--the dressing wasn't runny, the parmesan flakes were copious enough, and the romaine leaves were crisp and refreshing. the anchovy flavor was perfectly balanced, too.

eric ordered the cowboy rib eye, and i had the petit filet with shrimp (http://www.ruthschris.com/menu/entrees.html). we both ordered our steaks medium rare but mine came out a little closer to medium. no matter--both were still very tasty. we had the potatoes au gratin (http://www.ruthschris.com/menu/potatoes.html)and broiled tomato (http://www.ruthschris.com/menu/vegetables.html)as sides. mmmm...it's only the next morning, and i want to eat there again.

we shared a bottle of edmeads 2005 mendocino (http://www.wine.com/V6/Edmeades-Mendocino-Zinfandel-2005/wine/89004/detail.aspx). dessert was a comped bread pudding with whiskey sauce (http://www.ruthschris.com/menu/desserts.html)in celebration of my mumbleth birthday.

what made the whole experience sweeter was that we were surrounded by other couples--one celebrating an anniversary, another a birthday, an elder couple clearly still adorably in love, and another couple who seemed only a few weeks, if not a few days, away from welcoming a new baby (the missus' belly was adorably shaped like a bulging torpedo). and of course the best part was looking across the table at my sweets. :)

Happy belated "mumbleth" birthday, Cyn!

Which Ruth's Chris was this? Waikiki Beachwalk or Restaurant Row? I'm curious how good the new Waikiki one is.

we went to the one at restaurant row.

ironically, we ran into a friend of eric's at sam's club yesterday evening, and she told us another friend of eric's was going to have dinner at the waikiki RC. long story short, a third friend recently got a job as some sort of manager there, and a fourth friend also works there. the second friend, who was having dinner at RC Waikiki, used to be a manager at RC Restaurant Row.

anyway, now that i've probably confused you, dinner last night was from bac nam (onokinegrindz.typepad.com/ono_kine_grindz/2004/10/bac_nam.html)on king between pensacola and piikoi. we shared two shredded pork rolls and veggies (carrot, cabbage, celery, tomato) and beef sauteed in some sort of oyster sauce/ginger gravy and topped with cilantro. we had some jasmine rice with fried garlic on top to eat with the veggies/beef.

we wanted a lighter dinner because it hadn't been that long since we had eaten pizza at sam's club. one thing tho--i won't make the mistake anytime soon of eating a carby meal and having a full-sugar drink like pizza and fruit punch (i didn't want any caffiene so i stayed away from the only diet choice - coke). ugh! within the hour, i felt my body chemistry go all whack and suddenly i could feel my temper flare incontrollably and i became very inclined to act a snappish and whiny harpy.

boy, those younger days of mine where i could eat anything i want without consequence are surely gone. :(

eric and i unwittingly jumped on the chicken-for-dinner-on-sunday-september 23rd bandwagon. we had to go to sam's club earlier today so whilst there, we grabbed a rotisserie chicken and some asparagus. eric put the asparagus under the broiler for about ten minutes and toasted a couple slices of sourdough from fritz' bakery in kalihi and poof! a quick but tasty dinner. dessert was chocolate/new york cheesecake froyo.

Anybody like join me?

Well, I could use more fiber in my diet along with less fat.
Maybe go slower on the beer.

More saba and choy sum, and less steak and meatballs, perhaps, but I don't know about an all-out "diet" with blanket restrictions.

Nothing goes down better after a hard days work than an ice-cold beer and a good hot meal.

"Diet" just sounds so final.

BTW: I start my strict diet today. I tipped the scale at 200 lbs last night.:( I'm not going to blame my quitting smoking on it. :o Nope. I take responsibility for my disgustingly obese body and unhealthy state.

I am going to lose weight!

One day at a time.

Anybody like join me?

Well, I've been sorta on a "weight management" plan (don't like the term "diet" either!) this year. I cut portion sizes and try to make better choices (but that's hard for me because I am so picky and do not like vegetables!) I also started walking. I have lost 42lbs so far this year. I intend to lose more...

I mean same page as far as yielding results from better eating habits (I refuse to use that other four-letter word). I would not LIKE to stop eating certain foods altogether, but if that's what it takes then I guess I would just have to do it.

Kanahina seems to get good results without having to go that far, but I figure different people = different outcome, so of course different "menu modifications" apply.

Shaka Therapy = "OOOUUUWWWIEEE!"

I would prefer to exhaust all the other options, first.

I still like to listen to Rap Reiplinger every now and then, and your post reminded me of his "Shaka Therapy" skit.

"You coming back. Right, Mr. Barbosa?"

"No!
I no like come back"

from kaimuki big city: mamasan's monster meatloaf with marsala mushroom and roasted garlic gravy over spinach with garlic mashed; not-so-big chili (you can taste the beer! yum!) with everything and brown rice. i ordered the meatloaf and eric got the chili, but we switched plates a few times. dessert was the apple pie ala mode which includes bubbies vanilla ice cream. the apple pie isn't your typical apple pie. it's a very good apple pie filling accompanied with two big fluffs of phyllo dough. it's got ice cream and whipped cream as well as caramel sauce drizzles and a sprinkling of nuts. mmmm.

we're stuffed. but hey--dessert was free. you can have dessert free at least once a year, too, if you sign up for big city's monthly emails. they send you a coupon for free stuff every now and again, including a free dessert for your birthday.

Leo Lakio, I don't know how this seasoning is typically used, but I like to season fish fillets -- wet the fillets and sprinkle some Vinha Dalos seasoning, then flour and pan fry. It's really tasty! Oh, but a bit of advice... be sure not to breathe when you handle the Vinha Dalos powder. The vinegar and chilis are pretty potent!

Saturday night I BBQ'd rib steaks, potatoes and broccoli for the wife and myself.

Star market had avocados on sale, so I made guacamole (avocado, mayo, salsa and parmesan). Had it with flour tortilla chips.

I bought some fancy margarita glasses at Kmart several months ago, and once a week or two we make coladas or margaritas in them.

This week, it was an OJ colada - OJ, rum, ice cream and ice - blended until thick. Yum! And easy.

We have a guava tree and I freeze the strained juice to use in these drinks. (Also great in cheesecake!)

Variations: OJ, sweet-sour mix, and/or guava puree blended with tequila for a Kalihi margarita.

Also great with Galliano or Amaretto.

Traditional colada as taught to me by my friend Carole Kahn on Kauai was: Pineapple juice, coconut juice, ice cream, rum, blended with ice. So goood.

Visiting Hawaiian Musician Week continues here in Seattle (see the breakfast thread) - went out for sushi tonight with a couple guys on their West Coast tour, then brought 'em back to our house for homemade brownies and vanilla gelato.

Culinary tip: dice up pieces of candied ginger to add to your brownie mix - YUM!
