Here are a bunch of them from mostly 1974 time frame:

Jerry Lewis Twin Theaters: Windward City Shopping Center

American Theaters: 130 N. Hotel Street

Holiday Kailua Theaters

Holiday Kam Shopping Center Theater (now KB Toys)

Nippon Theaters: Beretania & Keeaumoku, in 1962 was known as the Palace Theaters

Empress Theaters: 1190 Nunanu Avene

Toho Theaters: Kapiolani Blvd. (now Blockbuster Video?)

King Theaters: 59 S. King Street

Toyo Theater: Beretania & College Walk (I think the property turned into eventually the Honolulu Weekly offices, since demolished and Hawaii USA FCU)

Kapahulu Theaters: Kapahulu and Date Street

King & Royal Sunset Drive Inn: Farrington & Kunia Roads

Royal Theaters: 2380 Kuhio

Rex Theaters: 1164 Maunakea

Theater at Kings Alley: 131 Kalulani Avenue

Would be sort of interesting to do a what is there now or even what was there in between then and now!

I didn't see it on your list, but in my neck of the woods (Kaimuki/St. Louis Heights), there's the old, old, old Queen Theater on Waialae Ave. I think the owners use it as a warehouse now.

Besides the Cinerama, Waikiki Twins and Waikiki #3, my next favorite was the old Royal Theater at Kuhio. Movies I remember seeing there were "True Grit", "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Star Trek The Motion Picture". "The Black Hole," and "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Sadly torn down and now what, a fancy high rise hotel sits there.... can't remember the name of it now. Royal Outrigger???

I think Perry Boy Somgies is at the old Royal Theater site, at least it was a few years ago.

There was also a Kaimuki Theater that was located a block or two east from Queen's Theater.

Empress Theaters: 1190 Nunanu Avene

Is that the one that's now a New Hope chapel?

You're also missing the Cinerama (now a Checkers Auto parts)

There another one that's on the corner of Queen and Cook. Don't know what the name was, but the building is still there. One of the business in it is a dive shop.

Can't forget the Varsity.

Kuhio Theater, a block Diamondhead on Kuhio Ave. from Nick's Fishmarket.

Ilikai Marina theater, where Outback Steakhouse is located.

Waialae Drive-In.

Kailua Drive-In.

Palama Theater, later known as Zamboanga, on North King near Kaiulani School.

Palace ===> Nippon ===> Golden Harvest (Beretania-Keaaumoku).

What happened to the adult theaters in Chinatown like Roosevelt and Busy-Bee?

Kalihiboy
July 28th, 2007, 11:24 PM
I didn't list a few theaters like Waikiki or Cinerama, figured they were talked about enough and sort of closed recently compared to many others.

Were the Harbor Theaters and Illikai Theaters one in the same?

So when your in the Outback Steakhouse that was literally the theater? What always gets me is the low ceilings they had to obviously modify changes drastically to convert into what the business occupants use today. You can easily tell that Papa Johns/Blockbuster and even Cinerama were once theaters I think.

I think a fw of the theater listings I gave may have been adult theaters or turned into them later on.

Queen Theater still sits rotting away to this day. Very sad. Too bad nobody can go fix it up and turn it back into some of the older style theaters I remember seeing on the mainland.

Is this location literally what is now Niketown or am I off a bit?

Wasn't there once a small theater at the Kuhio Mall which is now known as Waikiki Town Center I think on the other side of the International Marketplace.

It was called the Marina Twin Theaters. It was the smallest of the theaters back then each theater holding roughly the same amount of people as one of the Resturant Row theater or one of the older Pearlridge West theater.

At first they were part of the Royal chain of theaters but later on they got brought by Consolidated.

I haven't been to Outback Steakhouse so I can't comment what changes they made but they didn't have much rows in the theater and the screen was on the mountain side of the building (closer to the street).

The Marina Twin Theaters was located next to the old Kaiser Hospital, the one they demolished during a episode of Magnum and is now known as the Hawaii Prince Hotels if I remember right.

If you are talking about the thread titled Your favorite movie theater (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=11537) then maybe yeah, however the original intention of the thread (which I failed to mention) was your current favorite movie theater. Out of the 54 notes in the thread, 7 of them did mention current theaters, the rest of them was going down memory lane, so one is kind of left with the question does anyone go to a movie theater now a days?

The Empress was never a Hope Chapel, but it was Calvary Chapel of Honolulu before that church moved to Aiea. There's a new church there now. When I was in high school in the 80s, the Empress and Toyo both showed Asian films, and some friends and I caught a few pictures there after school.

Nobody's mentioned the old Waipahu Theater, which in its heyday was a huge part of life on and around Depot Road. By the mid-70s it was an adult theater, and by the late 80s it was the home of City of Refuge Church.

Don't forget the Holiday Theatera in Nanakuli and Laie.

The Holiday Theater is Laie still operates as part of the chain that also owns Restaurant Row theaters. The theater was split in 2 and they don't show dollar movies like they do at Restaurant Row.

Used to have a drive-in theatre in Waianae, but was already falling apart when I was in high school. No forget Kailua Drive-in. Kam has gone to heck.

Wailua Theatre is still standing, but no longer a theatre.

Haleiwa is a McD's.

Wahiawa Theatre is a bank.

Victory Theatre is now Sunnyside.

You and Helen are correct: It's still a parking structure. It was still a theater when I was a bus-riding intermediate-schooler, and I remember thinking I couldn't wait until I was a little older, so my other bus-riding friends and I could maybe catch movies there after school before going the rest of the way home. By the time that happened, it was a parking structure.

Roxy Theater, Kapaa, Kauai.

It got demolished after Hurricane Iniki in 1992. An ABC store is now on the site. I remember going there up until 1987. They showed Tagalog films in the last few years it was operating, and there was a Mexican/ Puerto Rican restaurant in the lobby. It's the only theater I've been to where you couldn't smell popcorn, because it smelled like pastele.

If we're going to start naming off Neighbor Island movie theaters, there was Iao Theater in Wailuku, still sort of a theater today, being used nowadays by a community theatre group mostly. King Theater on North Vineyard St. (almost across from the old Yokouchi Bakery), where the Thai restaurant is now. Paia Theater, wiped out by a tsunami. The old Kahului Theater, now the site of a Burger King on the corner of Hana Hwy and Puunene Ave.. Kahului Drive Inn, where Maui Community College is now (near where the Pa'aina Culinary Center is). Hooo...we used to have good fun in there! Cram lots of people in the car, pull up next to the speakers, and then pile out of the car to head for the refreshment stand! Oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure there was a theater in Puunene too, which served the plantation camps. But that one was gone waaaay before my time!:D

Yup, that's about right. Buuut might also be closer to School Street, maybe where the overpass is. Dunno exactly.

Never went to too many movies, but distinctly remember seeing Kirk Douglas in "Lonely Are The Brave" there. Now, that was one fine movie.

We had those Saturday morning kids' clubs in Hilo, too, at the Palace Theater. Ours was called the Mickey Mouse Club and cost a dime for seven cartoons and a movie, usually a John Wayne western or war movie, or a sci-fi flick like "The Giant Claw" or "Twenty Million Miles From Earth."

A quarter went a long way back then: a dime for the ticket and the rest for the concession stand. Candy bars were a nickel, preserved seeds (e.g. li hing mui) or sodas a dime. This was a cheap form of child care for parents to get their kids out of their hair for a couple of hours each Saturday.

You'd get a coupon for free admission for your birthday and the management passed out free 5 oz. ice cream cups at Christmas time.

The Palace no longer operates a regular movie house, but is an arts and cinema venue similar to the Hawaii Theater on Bethel St. I believe that the Pawaa also had a similar club for kids.

It was also the busiest McD's in the state (outside Waikiki), according to something I read in the late eighties or early nineties. That same news article said it had the busiest drive-through. I wonder if either of those facts is still true.

Hawaii's first McDonald's was in Aina Haina, circa 1968, then Palolo the next year. McD's most expensive sandwich was the roast beef @$0.69, followed by the Big Mac @$0.63, and the double cheeseburger @$0.59.

After the "mauka arterial" which ran from Cartwright Field to King St. after the UH cutoff, a section was built from the east end of Kinau to Moanalua Gardens. This was in the early to mid 60's.

Yes somebody needs to find old photographs and do a THEN and NOW photobook on not only movie theaters but just about anything that has changed over the years. Even Ala Moana has changed drastically over the past 10 years.

Honolulu it seems is one of the few cities that the THEN & NOW photo books havent done one on yet. They did a great one on Las Vegas and all of the old casinos which of course were replaced by new casinos, Costco sold that book quite well I heard.

I wrote the publisher and they expressed interest in it, but haven't seen it on the shelves yet.

The original 4-Plex Pearlridge Theaters that has been closed for some years has either some sort of medical facility or the military recruiting offices there, at least as of a year ago, but the 4-Plex was across the street from the Pearlridge Center where Longs Drugs and Sears are at (I can't remember if it's Downtown/Uptown or Phase I or Phase II). I know at least a couple of restaurants in that building were there already before the theater had shut down.

The Pearlridge West Theaters is in the center itself, the same set of buildings where Longs Drugs and Sears are in. It's a 16 Plex now but it wasn't like that at first and I can't remember how many theaters it originally had.

The Sears/Longs side is Phase II (now Downtown). The building the theaters were in, where there is now a clinic, was known as Phase III, but I wonder now if that has a name at all: I don't think it got re-named when Phases I and II became Uptown and Downtown. Almost nobody ever called it Phase III anyway.

The Keolu Center Cinemas are set to shut down by the end of April, while the Aikahi Park Shopping Center is negotiating for a new tenant to take over the Aikahi Twin theater space.

The days of the dollar movies are numbered.

This begs the question when did the Wallace Theaters become the Hollywood Theaters?

Holiday Theaters was owned at one time by Holiday Mart right?

The Theaters that were once at the Windward Shopping Center are now 24 Hour Fitness.

<sigh> Tell me about it. Coral Reef, India Imports, Penny's, Liberty House, House of Music, Singer, Honolulu Bookstore, Woolworths, Hopaco ....

Ala Moana used to be a nice place to visit and shop. Now, outside of a few places like Sears and Longs, it's all for the tourists and fashion folks. There's got to be more that I haven't mentioned.

Before it closes...word on the Advertiser on todays paper....very soon due to lease xpiration....Keolu Cinemas--at the Keolu Shopping Center, is due to shut down soon.

Hmmm, and the Enchanted Lake Cinemas (literally next door to the Keolu Cinemas) closed a few years ago. Definitely part of a trend where the 2 or 4 screen theaters in midsize shopping centers are closing as movie fans flock to the larger, more modern megaplexes.

Really? There was a Leeds at AMC? Come to think of it I haven't needed a Leed's (dyed to match shoes and purse) since high school!

That was always my favorite store for gifts. Lotsa handmade pottery, blown glass, yada, yada. Some really gorgeous stuff. They eventually ended up in Kahala Mall. Not being much of a shopper, I believe TFS is gone now. Too bad.

Yeah was in street level, ocean & ewa side of the shopping center. More or less where Sam Goody (or whatever it's called now) resides.

It's not just those Ala Moana restaurants that have closed. Almost all of the restaurants owned by Andrew Wong's family have shut down. (Andy's Drive In, Andrew's, Orson's, Coral Reef, Chinese Chuckwagon and Seafood Emporium.) The only ones that remain in business are Byron's Drive In near the airport and Chowder House at Ward Warehouse.
