I had to laugh when I read today's SB on Kahuku's trash pickup problems (http://starbulletin.com/2007/08/10/news/story01.html)

After almost 4-years of living on the Big Island (where we have no trash pickup), I realized how spoiled I was living on Oahu. If I want my rubbish thrown away, I have to take it to the refuse center myself along with everybody else here including my 90-year old father. Plus we have more unpaved roads than Oahu as well.

On Oahu you have virtually everything at your disposal from county water to trash pick up. In parts of the Big Island we have to catch our own water or haul it in, we have no Cable service so it's satellite or rabbit ears. Some of us don't even have electrical service (Kalapana areas) or simple phones.

When the earthquake hit the Big Island most of us simply went on with our lives used to the sporadic rolling black outs HELCO gives us. Oahu on the other hand...OMG...how embarrassing.

I found it hard to believe this story even made it to the newspaper at all? It's just trash pick up. Life doesn't end when the trash isn't picked up...you know there are transfer stations all over Oahu but how many know of them? I lived in Honolulu for 44-years never knowing there was the Waimanalo Transfer station because I always depended on the twice a week trash pick up.

I learned a lot by moving out of Honolulu and into Keaau to become more independent from Government services. Man if I ever move back to Honolulu the first thing I'd do is build a catchment tank and reduce my water bill to practically nothing.
