View Full Version : Tsunami Alert for 08/15/07

It's a busy day for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (http://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/).
Earlier today, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska raised an alert, but at 10:30 a.m. the all clear (http://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/messages/hawaii/2007/hawaii.2007.08.15.203242.txt) was issued.
Moments ago, a magnitude 7.9 (!!!) earthquake in Peru has prompted a preliminary tsunami warning and watch (http://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/messages/hawaii/2007/hawaii.2007.08.16.002055.txt) for adjacent regions, and the PTWC notes that it may issue a watch or warning notice for Hawaii. If waves are generated, they'd arrive after 2 a.m.

Just saw that, PZ. Quite exciting in these parts I must say! Whatever happened to boring old trades, LOL!

Actually I think there was one a few years back. I can't recall when exactly tho, just remember an email saying "There's a *@!*% TORNADO!!"
Ooo....it was long time back:
http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2004/Jan/26/ln/ln03a.html
A weather phenomenon rare in Hawai'i showed up and touched down in Central O'ahu yesterday afternoon when a tornado the length of four football fields kicked up red dirt and scattered rocks for four furious minutes.

So,
All jokes aside.
I'm in Hilo. I know nothing from Tsunamis.
What do I do to prepare ?
Also, how high up in town do I need to be to avoid it ?
How much advance notice is there to evacuate ? Do they use a siren ?
Some help on this please, my wife is freaking out.

you wait for civil defense to tell us if a swell is detected by any buoys. You will find out when we do. If we do, then you head up to Komohana Avenue and hang with the rest of the Hiloans having their tsunami party. Remember, if a tsunami was generated, it will hit in the wee hours of the morning. So keep the news on.

It's a form you fill out to see if you're in an evacuation zone. There's links there that'll give you info, but the site is slow for me so it's probably getting slammed.

The site says that it provides the same information that is in the front of the phone book.
Check out the Disaster Preparedness Guide (yellow section) in the Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages to see if you are in an area likely to be impacted by a tsunami.

The PTWC issued bulletin #3 (http://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/messages/pacific/2007/pacific.2007.08.16.012152.txt)...
SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. WE HAVE OBSERVED
A TSUNAMI SIGNAL ON THE DEEP OCEAN GAUGE OFF NORTHERN CHILE.
A TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG
COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO
MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE
EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.
Hawaii currently remains under advisory status.

Were you planning to evacute your home during Flossie because of sea water was about to overrun your place? If so then you should plan to evacute your place. Take the important papers and stuff. Hope you got your radio handy.
And yes that is purpose of the sirens to warning incoming Tsunamis and the reason for the monthly test on the first working day of the month.

Here in Hawai`i, we average one tornado every year and a half, as you can see here (http://www.disastercenter.com/hawaii/tornado.html) in records from 1950 through 1995.
I recall many of those, and several since then too, including this one (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2004/Jan/26/ln/ln03a.html) on O`ahu on January 26, 2004 (see photo below) and this one (http://starbulletin.com/2006/03/25/news/story03.html) on Lana`i on March 25, 2006, as well as others. And that doesn't include several waterspouts (usually stronger than tornadoes) each and every year.
Write this down -- one tornado in Hawai`i every year and a half.

Yes, if there is a tsunami threat, they will sound the sirens. In fact, that's the primary reason they installed them. Might want to study up on the April 1, 1949 Tsunami (http://www.drgeorgepc.com/Tsunami1946.html)

the problem with relying on the tsunami sirens is that about 30% of them dont work. there was an article in the paper after the oct 15th earthquake that discussed this....many are very old and parts are not available and many are faulty....when they have the tests.....this is what they learn... i think they are working on it...but they say it will be two years before they get them all fixed..

In that case you might consider buying a weather radio with SAME, or a EAS receiver to pick up alerts broadcast over the air.

Good God, NO !
I'm a purist....I've heard a few folks spoil exotica with other stuff (mostly punk rock)...it don't work. It's meant to be background music...or as Martin Denny put it "Window Dressing"
There is a way to make Exotica sound threatening (check "Crossing Kilauea" from the CD), no need to use a Charvel through a Mesa Boogie Stack.
Metal....been there, done that, don't wanna go back.
