View Full Version : Moray eels have jaws in their throats!

A U.C. Davis scientist has discovered that moray eels have a second set of jaws, complete with teeth, in their throats. Now I have one more reason not to stick my hand into holes in the reef. Those puhi are killer.

This brings to mind the Xenomorph (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenomorph_(Alien)) (Alien) in the film 'Alien'...The Xenomorph's mouth contains double mandibles; that is, it has one mouth inside another mouth. The first mandible, which is similar to a human's, lowers and the second mandible is located at the tip of a proboscis that extends outwards from inside the first.
Is there any sci-fi horror films based on an eel? I don't recall seeing one. If not, looks like the Moray would be the perfect new creature to cast. "Jaws: Moray".
Imagine a giant-sized, 60 ft.+ length, man-eating eel with double jaws like that.

Everybody sing!
When an eel bites your leg
And the pain makes you beg,
That's a moray...

I'm curious as to why it took this long to discover this.

According to the report this morning on NPR, it was strongly suspected (as there are a number of species that have this second jaw in their throats, though not with the teeth of the moray eel), but the modern advent of high-speed cameras confirmed the operation of the jaw.

This thread is just getting better and better - thank you, ericncyn, for joining the fray.
For years, I have had numerous "stretching-the-joke" verses to "That's Amore" in my head, including...

"Jaws: Moray".Well there's "The Deep" with Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset. The opening scene with her diving in a t-shirt is worth the price of admission alone.
When your fin won't shake free
And it's blood that you see
That's a moray...

I continue to bow to the excellent lyrical contributions above.
If your culture eats dogs
Or carves idols from logs,
Those are mores.

I used to read Mad Magazine all the time when I was a kid. This is fun.

The phrasing is a bit tricky, but I can make it work in my head. :o
I hadn't even tried for rhyming.
