So far from what i've seen, Britney's opening lip-sync'd act SUCKED.

Chris Brown and Rihanna's performance was my favorite so far. Except it's disappointing Chris Brown lip-sync'd too. But brotha' can dance... and sing... if he actually does so. I love the song 'Umbrella' by Rihanna.

Missed the MTV awards but did watch most of Fashion Rocks (http://www.cbs.com/specials/fashion_rocks_07/) on Friday night. Whatta show...esp. the duets with Usher/Mary J. Blige, Santana/Alicia Keyes and Carrie Underwood/Lindsey Buckingham. Great stuff!

I posted my thoughts in the Britney thread as I didn't see this one first...

Alicia Keys saved the show, IMO. Instead of all the performances in the clubs/suites, I really wish they stuck to the more traditional scheme of having the artists perform on the main stage.

Justin Timberlake totally dissed the girls of The Hills. Not only did he put out a plea to MTV to air more music videos instead of reality shows, the award that was supposed to have been presented to JT by Lauren Conrad was instead presented by a mysterious 4th woman on stage, who presented it to Timbaland who then presented it to JT. WTF?

This was the worst awards show presented by MTV...ever. I can't believe all the hype they had surrounding it.

Dear MTV. Go back to NYC and Radio City Music Hall. Thanks.

Oh, and if you like "Umbrella," be sure to check out Marie Digby's acoustic cover. I never really cared for the song (because I can't stand Rihanna) until I heard this cover. Mandy Moore did one too, and I was impressed by it!

Right.

Looking back, it really did seem like it was just a big 2 hour commercial for the PALMS.

Funny how Justin Timberlake would plea for MTV to play more videos when he has grown up in the era in which the station has been more about NOT playing videos than anything else with all of its reality based programs like Road Rules or Real World, etc.

I think the Award shows peaked and dare I say it jumped the shark YEARS ago.

Even other award shows like the American Music Awards are dreadful and not worth watching either.

I question what the real purpose of MTV is anymore as it is so far from its original concept it isnt funny anymore. I dont the network has been worth watching for about 15 years now.

Didn't even bother to watch it. I gave up on MTV and the VMA's a long time ago.

Why is it funny?

I'm less than 2 years older than JT and I remember 1-800-DIAL-MTV. Though I was born 2 years before "Video Killed the Radio Star," Nina Blackwood, Martha Quinn, JJ Jackson, Alan Hunter, Mark Hunter are not foreign to me.

In this day and age, corporations pay big $$$ to run their ads during shows like "The Hills" and "Newport Harbor". You think it'd be the same if MTV went back to a music video only format? Doubt it. I wouldn't mind going back to the MTV of yesteryear, but let's face it...it ain't ever gonna happen.

I'm glad you know about MTV history and all of the VJ's, I literally grew up with all of them. But the days of multi-million dollar music videos are over with the advent of You Tube and other similiar formats. There really is no need for MTV to show videos anymore when people can watch videos thru MY Space or an artists website, etc. so the former Music Video Television can continue to churn out non-music related shows of original programming and bore to death the generation that grew up with all of those classic VJ's. Even VHI is a bore to me. They should rerun classic MTV videos with its original VJ's, they would probably do better in the ratings and viewers with that concept! So glad I have hundreds of hours of clasic MTV on beta and vhs, many of which MTV doesnt have anymore since they lost a good chunk of their archives in a 1988 fire.

Rest in Peace JJ Jackson!

what about Randy Redwood(not a vj, but character)? ?Remember liquid television, the root of Aeon Flux, Bevis And Butthead? I was a kid and thought it was the cats ass to "hang" with Adam Curry, due to my momas job....

kurt loder is like the Tom Brokaw of MTV now.

I remember watching the "wall" come down, on MTV.

I was going to say the same thing about the irrelevancy of music video on MTV since the basic channel I get is not the same as it was 20 years ago. Today MTV as well as VH1 is just loaded with crappy reality shows and hardly any music.

I have to agree that YouTube, iTunes and other online venues are much better for viewing music videos, because you can pick the songs and videos you want to watch and ignore all of the rest.

Plus the music video offerings on YouTube are wide ranging from very old, historic footage to nearly all of the 80s and early 90s videos that were once the staple of MTV.

If I had the choice to select my own basic channels instead of having the cable TV industry deciding what I want to watch, MTV and VH1 would be among the many channels I'd deep six. I hate paying for something I no longer watch!

I agree about Loder being a Tom Brokow or Walter Cronkite of MTV, he goes way, way back. I liked Adam Curry, he amongst the second generation VJ's. I don't know what happened to him. I LOVED beavis and Butthead, probably goes down as one of my favorite cartoons and you wouldnt have King of the Hill today if it wasnt that show because of Mike Judge. Another show I liked at times was Remote Control, where people like Adam Sandler and Colin Quinn got their first starts in the biz...

Changing the subject a little bit, I didnt think Britney looked that bad, give her a break weight-wise she had 2 kids in less than 2 years, though I do have a feeling Christina Aguilera will look better after she has her first kid for whatever reason....

I was initially upset with the little snippets of the performances that were going on in the so-called party suites. They were little teasers that they always cut off while going to break. BUT, I realized that all the performances are up on the MTV website for viewing, so I'm a little happier now.

I liked Fall Out Boy's take on "Beat It" and thoroughly enjoyed the Foo Fighters show, which included an appearance by Lemmy of Motorhead and Serj Tankian from System Of A Down does the Dead Kennedy's "Holiday In Cambodia" with them. Cee-Lo from Gnarls Barkley also does a rendition of Prince's "Darling Nikki" with the Foo Fighters as well. Especially funnier is seeing all these young twentysomethings who have no clue who Lemmy is or the songs being sung.

You Tube also has a clip of the ending of the Kid Rock/Tommy Lee melee during Alicia Keys' performance.
