View Full Version : What are you really like?

I'm curious....... Do you think that you have a different personality here on HT than you do in real life? Maybe different personality isn't the right term. Maybe more open here than you would be in person? Or more shy:o ? All this discussion about being banned and the things that led up to the "banning" got me to thinking. We all have personalities that come through on the threads - but how real are they? I imagine sometimes that we are all sitting in a room discussing things face to face so I like to think I react in that same way. I know we all tend to go off topic and this sort of thing has come up from time to time but the discussion tends to drift off......you know, back on topic and stuff. In the months that I have been here, I feel like I've come to know some of you. But then I wonder - would I recognize you if we actually met?

I'm pretty much a newcomer here, but I was a long-time lurker before joining HT. That says a lot about me.
My real life personality reflects my on-line personality. I'm somewhat of an introvert, but not so much of an introvert that I would run away from something that is really important to me. I am definitely not confrontational. I know that being anonymous on-line makes it easy to take on an alter ego personality, but I just can't do that.
There are lots of posts that I wanted to make, but didn't. That says a lot about me, too.
Actually, I don't know why I am posting this. I am revealing too much of myself, which would be an accurate depiction of my real life. I am, in real life, very guarded.
Maybe I'm doing this because of the three beers that I've just drunk :o (or reading the recent posts on banning).
I think this is a very interesting (and informative/revealing) thread. What is the difference between your "real life" world and your HT life?

Online, I'm probably a nicer person as I have time to read and edit or delete. In the real world, I can be a really grouchy old fart SOB. I'll say no more. ;)

We are who we are, and the more we post about life's topics, the more we regress to the mean.
If you met me in person, you would think that I am thoughtful, funny, blunt, talkative (in an introverted way) mommyish, principled and just a bit spooky.

I'm more of "lurker" than a "poster" so I'm sure not too many people know me. I'm mainly known as "The SB webmaster's sister" -- although he doesn't work there anymore.
I try to stay away from posting on threads that are heated ore require strong opinions. Shy as I am, I'd hate to upset anyone with my humble opinions.
But it sure is fun to read others' posts! You can learn a lot about people and they don't even realize it. All good things, though! :D

I'm more outspoken here. I suspect I may come across nicer in person where I can control the "voice" (emotional level) used even if the words are the same.
Don't know as there's much difference otherwise. It's not like my politics or opinions are any different.

There are lots of posts that I wanted to make, but didn't. That says a lot about me, too.lol!
This reminds me of that ethnic observation by Rap Replinger about how Hawaii has so many mixed breeds. That would make you, Honoruru, one "Japanee-Podogee" because "you get a lot to say, eh!... but you don't wanna' talk about it". :D
With that, having fun, being upbeat and staying positive (for the most part, except blue Mondays) is my protocol here, while learning a few things at the same time. That's pretty much how I am in person. I enjoy meeting interesting new people, and aside of "real life", HT is a great place for that. I've met Tikiyaki, Auntie and AbsolutChaos in person (and know quite a few other lurkers, too), and hopefully they'll endorse my self-assessment, even through our brief time together chatting.

Good thread, Acousticlady!
If we were all in a room and having these discussions we'd go off-topic just as we do here. It's human nature for one subject to inspire thoughts on another, etc.
I've been told that I write just as I sound. I'm part redneck and no one has more faults than me, but one of the few I don't have is that of being a "plastic person." Love me, hate me or just tolerate me.....I'm me and have even had people tell me that I'm always the same and I mean that she meant every time we run into each other, whatever type of event or just out and about, I'm the same. Maybe that means boring but I seriously think it indicates that people I post with could recognize me after a good time of interaction, yeah.

We're the same online as we are in person. NEENZ is here, and NOE is the backbone supporter. We don't have an avatar, it's our real mugs...a bit crooked, but there's really nothing too straight 'bout us to begin with. I do my best to be polite in the real and the virtual, contribute here and there rather than grumble and scrounge. At times, I enjoy the virtual interactions versus the real because I do have an introverted side, although so many would disagree.
If you think you recognize us, tilt your head a bit to get focus and shout out NEENZ! I know that if I see a cool looking toddler, puffin' on a gum rolled cig I'm gonna shout, "LIKA NUI!" :D

Tikiyaki, I don't think you are wrong. So much is lost in the written medium that it can make us sounds arrogant, hateful, etc...when we aren't feeling or acting that way as we type, sarcasm can be totally undetectable in writing, and jokes can fly by the reader.

I don't know how I come across online but I like to think it's pretty close to how I am in real life. It's a Hawaii board, never know when family gonna lurk around dis place and kick my 'okole if I'm kolohe. :p I'm starting to think I have to be more discreet with what I say and pics I post online or my family gonna kick my 'okole for me being too open with information, yeah? LOL. I already found out I'm related to 2 people on HT, one through our cousins gettin' married, so da islands are DEFINITELY small and one can't escape that fact, even on a Hawaii forum.
I am generally happy, easy going, open minded and absolutely not confrontational. I'm nice to the point that people like to mistake it for weakness. They get a reality check when they try to take advantage of my kindness. I don't think I come across well in writing so I tend to restrain myself on forums but in person I talk too much. When I'm curious about stuff or on a personal quest of growth I probably ask too many questions and come across as niele but I swear I'm not. I just love to learn new things. :)
If that doesn't scare you then I'd love to meet you next time I'm back home! Me and Auntie Lynn just barely missed eachother last time I was around and I'm still sorry about that.
Which reminds me, the Portuguese "Festa" (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2007/Sep/05/br/br1854760239.html) is this weekend!
This sounds like oh so ono fun. I'll leave a note to my grandpa on his myspace. Yes, my 80 year old grandfather has a myspace. :D I love how the Portuguese pronounce "s", so festa sounds like "fesh-tah."

I think they think they are doing fine. In time I think they'll look back and realize that it takes one heckuva lot of time to get over being 'orphaned' at such young ages. Oldest is currently on a full scholarship at UNLV while missing Hawaii, her sister and her friends terribly! Youngest is on cruise control altho' she's managed to get back to school. My goal is to keep 'em both in school!

Hallo. 'Tis me.
I believe in Popeye, to wit: "I Yam Whutt-I Yam, and that's all I can stands and I can't stands no more! Yuk, yuk, yuk."
Like Popeye said, I am what I am.
I think I'm exactly the same online as I am in person, or at least I have always tried to be. I have never* tried to hide my identity online. I have almost always signed my real name to my posts, even though my online account name is different.
I've been online since the 1980s, first on local BBSs, AOL, then Flex/aloha.com when it came available in 1994. The entire time, I always signed my name to posts, no matter the screen name. A web search will quickly tell you exactly who is on the other end of one of my posts.
I think I'm loud (I have partial hearing loss, so that may have something to do with it. Then again, maybe I'm just loud!), sometimes funny (or at least try to be), I love a good horse-laugh. I've often been told (by myself) that I don't know when to shut the hell up.
I came from a family of "Podagee Lawyers" who would argue any point unto death around the dinner table. There were 7 of us kids, all of us loving a good debate.
I am neither Democrat nor Republican. I try to think for myself on each issue.
I try to do what is right, pono, always. I try to bring up my one and only kid to lead a pono life. Sometimes I'm very successful. Sometimes I fail miserably, but I keep trying.
I try to be generous, I love to be of help when help is needed. I think in my zeal to help, I've maybe occasionally been construed as suspect, with ulterior motives. I have none, other than wanting to help others and wanting to make a difference.
What else? Hmmmm. I love to hear a kid laugh out loud. It makes my heart feel really good.
Oh, and I never, ever give up trying to reach a goal.
Aloha all,
Blaine

My online "voice" is probably a lot more stern than my real voice. People have said I have a dry sense of humor and while they roll their eyes at my wise cracks they'll probably miss it when I'm dead.... :-)
I'm a lot more patient now than 20 years ago. But maybe because I learned that there are few things in life that are all THAT important. And the few things that ARE THAT important are worth standing for.
I won't tolerate dishonesty. And ethics are always important. I can sympathize when someone doesn't know something. But I can't stand willful ignorance. When something is part of their job or livelihood, and they refuse to understand it, well that just gets my goat.
As for my own beliefs: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Do for others just for the sake of doing something. Always put out a quality product: it ain't good enough until it's good enough, or you just ran out of time. And try to make someone smile along the way.
As for my own identity, perhaps one or two have figured it out. I always use my real name on professional discussion forums. But this one's for fun and I decided to remain anonymous.

Surfingfarmboy
September 21st, 2007, 01:12 PM
Despite my screen name, I am not much of a surfer...though I am able (or was at one time, back in the day) to control a longboard with some ability. The screen name surfingfarmboy was what some local rippers on the North Shore of O'ahu called me one day when they saw me carrying a board offshore at Pupukea, while I was clad in my bib overalls. ("Hang ten, Surfingfarmboy"!) The complete story is in the "How Did You Get Your Screen Name" thread.
I would have to say that I do not have a separate persona while I reply to threads on HT. What some HT'ers may envision me (if anyone does here on HT) probably parallels the actual real-life me. The "hick" farmboy in me, at least in my opinion, seems to be evident in some of my posts, when I go back and read them. Generally, in the same way I live my real life, I'm one to avoid online controversy whenever possible...I've seldom been one to opine on hot-button topics. I steer clear of them as if I state my opinion on a touchy subject, someone will always find a reason to refute it, in turn, necessitating a defense of it. And I dislike that. I've never been one who enjoys debates for the sake of debates. Perhaps my somewhat modest post count, despite being a member of Hawaii Threads since February 2005, (in comparison to the post counts of other long-time HT'ers) is testament to this.
In summery, I'm just a farmboy more at home and at ease while on a John Deere, working a field, than anywhere else. I feel this can be deduced from my posts. Conversely though, I do wish at times that I could be a bit more outgoing and able to add to the conversations of the day. Being an old farmboy from a remote area of Ka'u, (where when I was growing up I thought that Hilo was just an incredible metropolis!), I guess I haven't learned how to be really sociable and at ease with others, in the real world or an online community, such as Hawaii Threads. This seems to be a common trait among us sodbusters.
I will say that in the time I've been a member of Hawaii Threads, I've been fortunate to meet many other fellow members; the list (though not complete) being headlined by pzarquon, (and his wife Kilinahe), tutusue, 1stwahine, zztype, tim kona, Gecko Geek...and above all, HT's one and only Scrivener. (Perhaps one day I'll meet up with East Coast Tropics and akrauth here on the EC) I have a feeling that at least one member of this list will refute what I perceive myself as and say that I'm just the opposite. It's bound to happen. After all, this is Hawaii Threads! ;)
