ok, i know i'm gonna sound like an advertisement, but i swear i have no connection with this place except that i just discovered it. i live on the corner of beretania and nuuanu and kept walking past this place, mix cafe, on beretania between bethel and fort st. mall. it looked really cute, but finally today i dragged DH & my baby (i'm a stay at home mom) there for an early lunch and OMG!! the food is awesome! i had the pork tenderloin sandwich, which was roasted pork, moist and tender, with just a bit of a salty crust on it and a bit of stilton cheese, which i never would have thought to put together, but was perfect together. came on a huge freshly baked roll, with a little bit of roasted veggies on the side. i think it was about 7 bucks. it had to be the best pork i've had in a looooong time, maybe ever. the atmosphere is cute too. the owner is italian, went to culinary school in new york and has the totally cool name bruno. free wi-fi too, though i didn't take advantage of it. it smells incredible when you walk in and it's hard to decide what to get--the had this sage butter pasta with smoked salmon that i almost got but will have to try next time. anyway, for all you who work downtown i know you probably look for good places to have lunch and you'd probably never know this place was there unless i told you b/c it's on the back side (mauka) of fort street mall. it's well worth the trip, imho.

Is that in the space where the Ground Zero cafe used to be? It does sound good from your description -- did you notice anything else on the menu that was appealing?

This guy used to have an Italian place on Alakea/Beretania but had to close when construction started. He wanted to get into Remington College Bldg. but we didn't have a space right for his business. But..........he brought us samples of his desserts - they are to DIE for!!! If anyone goes, try them for sure. We also tried some of his pasta & it was also delicious. I think he is either Italian or French - can't remember but he is a good chef & his place is very pretty - very art deco colors, especially all the green. I would recommend his food.

yup, i think it was ground zero and then something else and then lucky cafe? i believe bruno is italian. everything else on the menu sounded ono. there was a roasted veggie sandwich that i'd get if i was in 'vegetarian' mode (the pork sandwich came w/a little side of the roasted veggies--peppers, potatoes, eggplant--so i know it'd be good). the breakfast sounded good too, but they only serve that til 10ish. and probably any of the pastas!

Ok!!! The old Ground Zero!:D I know where it is! There's a Public Parking Lot right on the corner of Bethel/Beretania/Nuuanu. Also, at Marks Garage. Cheaper if you can find one on the street.

I'll try to make it today or tomorrow. Been thinking about the sandwich since you posted it.:)

...after getting off TheBoat, it was the perfect time to check out Mix Cafe so a brief walk later, i stepped into the door and the couple who runs the place acted like old friends (good morning! how are you?).

there were so many ono dishes to try but i went with the blueberry waffles, portabella mushroom pasta, and a cup of coffee. yeah, an odd combo but... it was ono!

kim is full of energy and info. she said that they've only been in operation in that spot for about two and a half months and that they'd been in new york prior to moving to hawaii. she emphasized that all of their dishes are made from the finest ingredients and are prepared fresh. since it's pretty new, she said that they're still trying to figure out a few things so expect the menu to be expanded in the next few weeks (e.g., ono gelato!)

in a nutshell, the food was ono, the prices reasonable, and the service very good.

As for dee sandwich.

Oh!! Da onolicious! P.K. ordered a salad. Crisp and the dressing was just right.

The music was relaxing too.

I am going to be a regular customer das foa shua!

Bruno gave me a scoop of Homemade Vanilla Ice-Cream which melted in my mouth.

awwwww, if i was only home playing hooky, eric and i would have gladly joined you, since we went last week and enjoyed a couple of their sandwiches as well as an acai smoothie.

alas, i'm not playing hooky--i'm home with funny tummy. my tummy is rumbling in painfully envious anger  at all the drool-worthy pictures! i bet if i printed the pics in full color and ate them, it'd be tastier than the milk of magnesia i've had to force myself to take! :(

I was SAD. So very SAD.

My heart was heavy. My tears flowed down from my face, in front of all the customers.

The owner comforted me. But it was no use. I left with my head hung down.

Ashamed and never to return again.

what the?!? i thought i had subscribed to this thread, but alas, i did not and i missed all the plans!! i am sooo sorry auntie lynn and everybody. it's been a little nuts b/c we're actually moving to the mainland and whatnot so i don't get to check the forum everyday. actually, now i'm really confused b/c apparently i DID subscribe to the forum, but i haven't gotten any email notifications! what?!?!

i'm actually emailing from mix cafe right NOW as i type--had to take advantage of their wi-fi and it's great. we're having a broker's open at our condo, so i got kicked out and it was a great excuse to have lunch here w/the baby. i think this is the 3rd time in 2 weeks i've been here and everytime has been so ONO! the place just makes me happy--the decor, the food, the staff. did you see they got written up in honolulu magazine? you heard it here first guys!

last time, i had the imported meat sandwich. good, but the meat is thinly sliced, like at du vin, so it made me want a glass of wine. plus, i like a better balance of meat and bread. but still tasty. DH had the meatball sandwich, which he enjoyed. today i had the turkey sandwich. bruno talked me into it. i thought, who wants a turkey sandwich? how boring. but omg, this is like no turkey sandwich i ever had--he makes the turkey here i guess and it was super moist with that incredible bread. i'm gonna go home and fall asleep. i've gotta try his pastas next. and his gelato. i keep asking, but they keep running out before i get there. apparently it's homemade, but he doesn't make it himself--another place does (somewhere in waikiki, kim told me somebody imported a gelato machine from italy).

we'll have to try again and i'll have to be better about checking this thread. gotta squeeze in as much of this place before we leave. :(

hi all! i'm new to HT and when i found this thread, well i had to write! i'm so glad that you all found this place and love it too! i work downtown and for months walked by waiting for them to open. the first morning they were open, i was in there getting a cappuccino and talking story with bruno and kim. as you all know, they're such good people and the food is incredible! so far i've had the turkey sandwich, roast pork sandwich, pasta with gorgonzola, the beet salad, and their lemonade is so refreshing! actually everything i've had there has been great, i did tell bruno i liked the turkey sandwich better than the roast pork and he feigned sadness when i told him this. i was there on monday and i was telling kim about the thread and she was so pleased and happy that one was started and she asked if the pictures were up and i said they were, and she started laughing and said, "thank goodness they are of bruno!"

my only beef with this place is that it's right around the corner from my office so i'm there at least 2-3 times a week! my wallets a little thinner and my waist band a little thicker! oh well, it's a small price to pay for ono food, lol. :)
