I have a friend not too far from Pahoa town who e-mailed me. No immediate danger but I'm concerned. Wanted to get other POV's & insights about Kilauea.
Madame Pele, make kindness please.

I was walking around the area last weekend. Beautiful...all we saw was two Nene Birds by the lookout. I shared the pictures on the HT Photo Thread.;)

Pahoa and surrounding subdivisions are in a Zone 2 volcanic hazard area.
Here is a link to the Kilauea lava zone threat map:

We live up by the Volcano National Park. We usually don't get vog here because most of it went down the coast and around the south tip to Kona. But my eyes have been watering for a little over a week now. Can't find any vog reports for here - just Hilo, Kona and Puna. I belong to the PunaWeb forum and there's a long and current thread about the recent lava flow heading towards Pahoa. It's moving very slow. No immediate danger. Could change direction at any time. But I'm sure it is bringing back lots of memories of Kalapana. We lost a home to fire in Oregon, and I can only imagine how people feel faced with lava. Pele's creations though as with the new island being born are awesome.

We drove towards Kalapana. Wat? We were tourists. Only to be met by a road block. I got out and took the picture. The road leading into Kalapana was all hard lava...huge and still in their formations. Den two SUV's came speeding on the road. Residents of Kalapana. They waved hi! We respected the sign and left. We did go the other way which led us to a restaurant and another scenic route towards Hilo.;)
