Although I have a huge Hawaiian music collection, I've gotten back into country. Anyone else on the board liking the more traditional music and not this new country stuff?

My mom listened to the traditional country stuff growing up, and I hated it for the most part (excluding Johnny, Patsy, Conway, Loretta, of course).

We don't get too many country performers coming out here with the exception of BayFest, and I've been wowed with the quality of acts they've had in recent years: Brad Paisley, Chris Cagle, Skynyrd, and most recently Gretchen Wilson and Alan Jackson. I like this 'new' country stuff.

I frequent Nashville's Waikiki (pretty much the only country bar here) on the weekends and it's not too hard to pick me out of the group. I'm pretty much the only Asian/Hawaiian looking person there, so I stick out like a sore thumb.

My mom listened to the traditional country stuff growing up, and I hated it for the most part (excluding Johnny, Patsy, Conway, Loretta, of course).Luckily my folks weren't into country, and I also couldn't stand it as well. ESPECIALLY the "traditional" country stuff. Still don't care for it, whether it's traditional or contemporary.

That "yankee cowboy", southern-drawl (or whatever you call it) accent (whether it's a male or female vocalist) just annoys me. I don't mind that if spoken by a person, just not in a song! Put it this way: Imagine if all local music was sung in pidgin?

Yet, most of our Hawaiian music has country roots, as well as R&B. It just doesn't sound the same because of the lyrics and voicing.

The closest you'll get me to country is something like say, "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles, which is actually classified as rock and roll, although it does have a country twang to it.

I used to manage the Sandbox, back when it belonged to Howard Farias. Maybe it still does, under that labyrinth of paperchase.

The best kept secret in country music is my favourite Aussie, Lee Kernaghan. He's the hottest country artist down there but unfortunately has no desire to crack this market ... yet. Maybe one day.

To hear some of his songs, you can go to his MySpace at: www.myspace.com/leekernaghan (http://www.myspace.com/leekernaghan)

I have every one of his albums and can't wait for the new one next year.

I also have a fan site for him at http://groups.msn.com/LeeKernaghanFans just in case anyone gets addicted to his music. It's easy to do.

And as far as more old country goes, I also like the Charlie Daniels Band and Johny Cash. BTW, one of my favorite songs is "Wildwood Flower." If I ever learn how to play 'ukulele, that will probably be one of the first songs I learn to play and sing because it only uses the c progression (that is, if you do it in the key of c).
