So far we've covered songs with themes about love (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=11960), food (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=12321&highlight=songs+food), color (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=12403), transportation, (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=13571) planets (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=13706), war (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=13829&highlight=songs), crime (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=13825) and numbers (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=13892).
All of those themes have some element of religion, being a part of our past, present and/or future. Whether you're agnostic, monotheistic, polytheistic, Buddhist, Muslim, Catholic, Jewish, or whatever your faith. There's a song that's been written in the name of life, death and spirituality, whether in the place of worship, or in pop culture...

I think.

JOHN LENNON - Imagine
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

I think. Those are good points. Which is why I'm trying to dig up those that are more from the mainstream and Billboard charts. There's also TONS of metal on the subject. Then of course you have all the Christmas music.. yay!

If by Bread.
If a picture paints a thousand words,
Then why cant I paint you?
The words will never show the you Ive come to know.
If a face could launch a thousand ships,
Then where am I to go?
Theres no one home but you,
Youre all thats left me too.
And when my love for life is running dry,
You come and pour yourself on me.
If a man could be two places at one time,
Id be with you.
Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way.
If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die,
Id spend the end with you.
And when the world was through,
Then one by one the stars would all go out,
Then you and I would simply fly away

One of my favorites that was a big top 40 hit in 1970:
Everything is Beautiful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xryMJD9TKZQ)* - by Ray Stevens
(partial lyrics below - complete lyrics here (http://www.my.homewithgod.com/heavenlymidis2/everything_beautiful.html))
Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world;
Red and yellow, black and white,
They are precious in His sight;
Jesus loves the little children of the world.
Refrain
Everything is beautiful in its' own way,
Like a starry summer night
or a snow covered winter's day.
Everybody's beautiful in their own way,
Under God's heaven, the world's gonna find a way.
There is none so blind as he who will not see.
We must not close our minds,
we must let our thoughts be free.
For every hour that passes by,
you know the world gets a little bit older.
It's time to realize that beauty lies
in the eyes of the beholder.

Side-note to MY SWEET LORD: Harrison was judged "guilty of unintended plagiarism" for using the music of HE'S SO FINE, a 1963 hit by the Chiffons. The clincher was a rendition of HE'S SO FINE by Jonathan King (EVERYONE'S GONE TO THE MOON) which was played in court. It overlaid the lyrics of HE'S SO FINE on the musical background of MY SWEET LORD.

"different but da' same". lol

M. C. Hammer freely admitted that his YOU CAN'T TOUCH THIS is a direct steal of SUPER-FREAK by Rick James.
SURFING USA by the Beach Boys used the music from Chuck Berry's SWEET LITTLE SIXTEEN and is now attributed to Brian Wilson and Chuck Berry.
Other artists produced follow-up tunes to their hits that were so similar that the second recordings did not sell, keeping them in the "one-hit wonder" category:
Chantays: PIPELINE ................ BEYOND;
Pyramids: PENETRATION ......... PRESSURE;
James/Bobby Purify: I'M YOUR PUPPET ........... YOU CAN'T KEEP A GOOD MAN DOWN

Wrong. Hell won't even have you.Even Satan likes the Beatles.Guess I'm deemed to Purgatory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43_8ejiKrFw) by Iron Maiden. Or I could be the Prodigal Son (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUsibOlkt-o), from the same album!
But ultimately, it's all For the Love of God (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NfZBvRvkIg) by Steve Vai. Also check out Cesar Huesca's rendition of For the Love of God (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWgbMY-s_2g). AWESOME!
